Regator is a blog aggregator designed to make quality blog content accessible to the masses. The site can help you find some great music (and video) from the best blogs on the internet. There is a player within the site that allows you to search for individual keywords, browse categories, create playlists, preview tracks AND keep navigating the site without a pop-up window.
Full Disclosure: I am one of the co-founders.
Cheers!

Re: TechCrunch August Capital 2008

Thanks for the mention... glad we're memorable! We're not looking to be a digg clone, although we do have user rating of posts on the site that play a part in creating our top rated pages for our over 300 different channels in our hierarchy. But we supplement those ratings with some algorithmical magic and some other things which even the playing field. We're really about making quality blog posts on the things that normal folks (who aren't down with the RSS/blogs, or just lazy) find interesting. Great meeting you. Its really interesting when you look at samples like that. It's something that many early adopters don't get. Real people have a passing interest in geek-tech high notes like the iphone and things they actually might buy someone for christmas but there's more to their life. This is precisely why we are targeting our new site, regator, for "normal" mainstream folks. We now have over 400 channels that have quality blog content on all types of things from alpacas to cars to sports to crafts... and we also have a healthy dose of tech too (maybe a little weighted too much that way admittedly right now but we are working on creating a balanced range of content that anyone could find something interesting in). We know we may not be geek darlings, but we are looking to build a business and we after the millions of people who apparently give a crap about britney spears and wouldn't know a Techmeme if Gabe Rivera bit them.

We go live to the world next wednesday, if you want a sneak peek at what the hell I am talking about let me know. scott ~at~ regator.com cheers

Re: louisgray.com: Where You Get Your Tech News Shapes Your Tech Views

Yeah, I downloaded that business plan from a site for $9.95 (and I got 300 of the best white papers ever written!), guaranteed winner!
fingers crossed... ;)
cheers mate

Re: louisgray.com: Is There Less Funding Or Are Startups Just Cheaper?

I think that it is easier to start-up these days as initial costs can be kept fairly low through development. Where bootstrapping really kind of hits the wall is when you are looking to scale and market. For most smaller teams that are working on passion and hopefully a good idea, it is generally speaking unsustainable without additional funds to make it a real business and more than just another website. You get to a point where you need to give full time attention to the project to really make it go somewhere. For some this happens faster than others and depends on the founding team. Luckily I am not at that point right now, however I also see a light at the end of the tunnel - which definitely helps.

Re: louisgray.com: Five Blogs To Be Checking Out This November

Thanks Louis... This is Scott, one of the co-founders of Regator.com. It is true that you cannot import opml and we only have 3000 blogs *right now*. We are adding new blogs every day, 3000 is just our starting point. You have to start somewhere!
We are listening closely to the feedback we are getting so keep an eye out for some exciting new features coming very soon that should make Regator more of an option for you.

Re: Regator: smart, well implemented, directory 2.0

Thanks for the nice words.

We are really happy that other people are seeing Regator as unique and interesting as we do. That said, it's early days still and we are looking to add more functionality based on what we are hearing. The trick is trying to add the *right* stuff and keep it simple so the average non-tech geek user can still have fun on the site and keep it really fast.

It's funny you that you describe it as a directory of sorts, as the first idea for the site was a directory for real estate blogs for worthwhile blogs but the idea kind of grew somewhat...

btw, I am from Sydney. Chris and Kimberly are American. We are baking in Atlanta, Georgia right now. We hid the domain details because our office is our home and we didn't want that everywhere.

Re: Aggregation vs. Plagiarism: A Modern Problem Hits an Old Medium

It's completely theft, there's no two ways about it. As we have been launching our site, we have seen so many splogs or dodgy aggregators doing some *interesting* things with posts about us - it comes mostly from TC, Mashable and RWW, but predominantly TC. A bloggers product is their words and they should be compensated in some ways for them. For us, we give back in traffic and just a teaser, but I could see a time when there was an "APRA" equivalent for blog content syndication royalties. Espoecially as more traditional news organizations move online and will not take nicely to people wholesalely using their content with no tangible benefits ($ or clicks). Obviously no one wants to talk about this as it is very much anti the valley POV, but when it starts to get overrun by big media they will be wanting to monetize and will protect their investments and revenue stream like they are trying to do today.

Re: Aggregation vs. Plagiarism: A Modern Problem Hits an Old Medium

Case in point:
http://datazilla.uni.cc/?p=223
vs.
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/mainstream...

Eerily similar, no? :)

Re: Aussie beer’s secret ingredients

If you look at the label it looks like they put a Hoegaarden label on the VB... which would make sense why there is orange peel.

Re: 2009 Will Be The Year of the Uber Blog

I agree with pretty much everything in this post. What I also think we'll start to see is more big media buys in the blog and uber blog space in the next year. They know they are on the outs and it comes down to not so much if they will buy, but how much of the market they will buy. This may not happen completely in 2009 but I think we'll start to see the beginning of it for sure. There has been consolidation and buying up of prominent blog brands and creation of uberblogs over the last couple of years, but that's mostly been done by other blogs. I think an interesting thing to ponder is how blogging as we know it will survive once big media really wants to play in this market. They have the money (still), professional writers and if they think that buying these brands will help them compete and add ad revenue and future-proof them as much as possible, they will do it and I would expect in droves once they figure it out. It will be very lucrative for many of the existing large players who can persevere but I don't see much of a commercially viable place for smaller one person blogs and anything but the most committed and organized co-op blogs. Maybe it won't happen this way, but what I can say that this time next year I don't think blogging as it stands will look the same whatever the case.

Re: Mashable Regator Atlanta Mixer #mashlanta

Dave., it was great having you make the trip down... Then we took a step back to see if it was the right thing to do, after a lot of arguing we figured that it wasn't and we would piss off more people (and the wrong people) than it would benefit us. Granted, we aren't Digg. We do wish them the best of luck on this and I am sure that they knew what they were getting themselves into (they're not stupid), but changing this perception will be a fairly uphill fight for them.

Re: TechNation Australia Added To Regator

Thanks for the write up. I would say that the early adopter crowd in the valley and elsewhere does has value as they can help you shake down your site really well in the beginning. But you have to be mindful that if you are looking for a larger more mainstream, or as we like to say, a "normal people" audience, you will not please all the geekorati all the time, they might not get why it is not employing 15 different APIs and you have to be okay with that. These users can also skew your site to a tech focus, if there is a lot of user interaction (like ours) and that can put off normal people from getting engaged when they do encounter the site. It's all about balance.

Re: 2008/10/28/christian-science-monitor/

This is a good move for the CSM. A weekly magazine can better highlight the long-form news features that they are known for and significantly reduce their headcount and production costs along the way. I would agree that they would have to be one of the more progressive print media companies out there and they will certainly have advantages if they can keep up their editorial quality while maintaining profitability in this hybrid magazine/online format.

Re: 2008/11/16/dwellicious/

This is from the same guys that formerly ran eNeighborhoods(remax.com, etc...), Andy Wooley and Greg Robertson. With their existing close ties and relationships within the real estate technology industry and major brokerages, they have an distinct advantage over any other startup in this space coming in cold. Plus, they are smart guys so even though this looks like a bit of a fail to a casual observer, if played right it could work out nicely. Why? Most people use a combination of websites to search for the right home to buy and currently there is no place to centrally manage the listings that you are interested in, let alone one that monitors them and keeps their status updated.

Re: 2008/11/16/dwellicious/

@ Greg I always get those two mixed up... :)

Good luck with the site. I've witnessed some fairly despicable behaviour on twitter (especially) that could definitely be seen in many courts as defamatory or libelous. People have to learn that just because you are online, it doesn't mean you are anonymous or that it gives you an excuse to be hateful for the thrill of it. My general rule is to talk to people online like my mum or grandmother would read it. Works for me.

Re: Mashable’s Upcoming East Coast Events: NYC, Philly and Atlanta

The Regator team is excited to be partnering with Mashable to bring them to the ATL for the first time! It looks like MS has actually gotten it right... as they do with every 3rd OS they release.

Hanan - Yes, that bad. Especially in the enterprise vs XP.
Donagh - good question, I used to manage 1500+ distributed users in a PC based environment and given a little time to mature I would be very eager to get my folks onto it.
MIchael- I would imagine it would go right over the top of your existing install. The file structure is a little different than in xp, but apart from that it should work fine. MS were covering their RC asses (and yours) in the install instructions for the release candidate, as by all rights, it was not completely ready for prime time

Re: 5 Stops to the Most Popular Stuff on the Internet

Another resource for finding new stuff and the best blog posts out there is Regator (www.regator.com). I did have Louis Gray as my wingman which probably helped. ;) I would also add that especially in the case where one of the people may think that you want something from them (publicity, business opportunity, etc)one shouldn't be clingy. I prefer to go for long term relationships which means they can start slow and grow. I guess i did okay at BlogWorld as I came home with a ridiculous stack of business cards.

Re: Social Media is No Place for Robot Behavior

I had twobots doing my bidding for a very short time a while back and ended up getting rid of the auto-reply very quickly. I could only imagine how many pitches you get. There is a place for good and reputable PR. If it gets noticed and you don't have a completely crap product you're golden. But you have to earn it and not burn the folks who pick you up. It's hard to get noticed, but we were lucky on our private beta to get picked up by TC, RWW and Mash among others, (but we intentionally chose a slow news day July 3rd - to increase our chances and we lucked out with great coverage).

To the second part of your post, I completely prefer face-to-face interactions of any kind rather than over phone or webex for meetings and especially introductions. That's why while I was in San Francisco last week I popped down to your tweetup/dinner and attended the TechCrunch party (met you ever so briefly). Just doing those things allowed me to meet people and have real conversations (even if they were brief) that were far more valuable than any press release or email from me that probably would have been ignored. As I am newcomer on the scene coming from another industry. I am essentially a nobody right now in this industry and I know it. It's especially hard if you aren't in the valley (we're based in Atlanta), but there are things you can do. You've got to start somewhere and we are in it for the long haul. :)

Re: Cuil: Why I’m trying to get off of the PR bandwagon…

Jaap & JeffH - pardon the plug, but our startup, regator.com, is looking to make all of the quality blog content that right now is hard to find, easy to find for people of all levels of tech savvy. Yeah, yeah, yeah - i can hear you say - isn't everyone... but we are doing this with a completely different take than say a techmeme, digg or other blog aggregators. We had contemplated putting our hat in, but it is a big risk. Especially if you don't make it.

Come early September there will be a flood of new startups trying to get everybody's attention. We thought it would be smarter, all things considered, to launch while it was a little quieter (next wednesday). I guess we'll see how it goes, we're excited to get the site out there for the world to see.

Re: Atlanta Startups That Didn’t Survive

I'd have to agree with Micah that people for the most part misunderstand what failing fast means. We fail fast every day but we still have a startup that is growing at a encouraging rate. What it means is try something, make mistakes, take risks, if they don't work, adjust/change direction. Too many people see it, as Micah puts it, as if you don't get traction right away or within x months just give up. Rubbish. Success is not easy, you have to work harder and longer than you ever thought possible and sacrifice more than you thought you ever would or could to make it even close to work, and even then it doesn't pan out most of the time.

I would also agree with Josh and Micah that unfortunately the Atlanta startup community in general focuses so much (too much) on getting investment money and not on skills to actually make a real business work. Before people go ballistic, there ARE people/groups that are doing this, but in general, this has not been the focus that has been readily apparent to many of the startups here in town. Startups aren't easy and successful startups are even harder. I have to commend Josh, Loren and everyone else who seriously goes for it their due, just for trying. At the end of the day, failure is absolutely in the eye of the beholder.

Re: The California State of Mind

Russ - I would agree with what you have here... the focus for the ATL startup community seems to focus so much on raising money and pitching investors instead of building viable businesses (marketing, pr, product development). Obviously the thinking being that if you can score an investor, you have a viable business. This is not always the case. Maybe some balance would serve the community better.

Re: Ignition Alley Coworking to Open in ATL September 1st!

Even though we've got our own offices, I'm sure the Regator folks will be around a fair bit.
