in Mashable Regator Atlanta Mixer #mashlanta on Dave Delaney : Dave Made That
Dave., it was great having you make the trip down... I enjoyed your video a lot! We're looking forward to Mashville! We'll definitely make the trip up there for that!
It was a great night and we are just so happy that it was full of great people (like yourself) and that everyone had such a good time. Not one negative comment on twitter is a miracle for something like this!!!
Anyways, have a good weekend and thanks for coming down! Next time you are in town, let me know and we can catch up over a beer!
p.s. We actually ended up with 442 people at the party!

in Is the DiggBar Content Theft? on Plagiarism Today
Jonathan - It's interesting... we were quite down the road on an eerily similar feature about 6 months ago for Regator. Then we took a step back to see if it was the right thing to do, after a lot of arguing we figured that it wasn't and we would piss off more people (and the wrong people) than it would benefit us. Granted, we aren't Digg. We do wish them the best of luck on this and I am sure that they knew what they were getting themselves into (they're not stupid), but changing this perception will be a fairly uphill fight for them.

I agree with your decision to hold back on it. Strangely, with Regator, you are even more tied to the content creators than Digg is in a way because you have a restricted-access group. Upsetting your bloggers would have had a much quicker and damaging response.
That being said, I don't think Digg is immune to this either. I think the response might be slow on this one as a lot of people are just now getting over the "Wow! Digg has a URL shortener!" element of it. to see what it really means.
If the late nineties are any clue, there's a backlash coming, people just have short memories :)

I had twobots doing my bidding for a very short time a while back and ended up getting rid of the auto-reply very quickly. I never had anyone complain about mine as I tried to make it sound like me with no links etc, but I figured if I was annoying others as much as they were annoying me. I had to stop it. I did. By the way, this comment was auto-generated. @regator

in 2009 Will Be The Year of the Uber Blog on The Inquisitr
I agree with pretty much everything in this post. What I also think we'll start to see is more big media buys in the blog and uber blog space in the next year. They know they are on the outs and it comes down to not so much if they will buy, but how much of the market they will buy. This may not happen completely in 2009 but I think we'll start to see the beginning of it for sure. There has been consolidation and buying up of prominent blog brands and creation of uberblogs over the last couple of years, but that's mostly been done by other blogs. I think an interesting thing to ponder is how blogging as we know it will survive once big media really wants to play in this market. They have the money (still), professional writers and if they think that buying these brands will help them compete and add ad revenue and future-proof them as much as possible, they will do it and I would expect in droves once they figure it out. It will be very lucrative for many of the existing large players who can persevere but I don't see much of a commercially viable place for smaller one person blogs and anything but the most committed and organized co-op blogs. Maybe it won't happen this way, but what I can say that this time next year I don't think blogging as it stands will look the same whatever the case.

in 2008/12/20/twitter-lawsuits/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
It's an interesting little post. I've witnessed some fairly despicable behaviour on twitter (especially) that could definitely be seen in many courts as defamatory or libelous. People have to learn that just because you are online, it doesn't mean you are anonymous or that it gives you an excuse to be hateful for the thrill of it. My general rule is to talk to people online like my mum or grandmother would read it. Works for me.

Filthy blood sucking lawyers ruin everything.... this is the Internet! get a life!
Twitter is a freaking WEB SITE. Who cares?! How do you define what is hateful?
Maybe we should all quit Twittering because what we're really doing is walking on eggshells and you never know who you're going to offend.
If we're going to have lawyers monitoring our Twitter conversations than Twitter should be shut down.
And if one person is going to be such a light in the loafers pansy, then maybe I should search for any and every "offensive" Tweet on Twitter and report it to the Pentagon.
So... we're going to waste taxpayer dollars trying to censor everyone?
The only real reason you this post exists is for link bait. The side effect will be a more miserable experience on Twitter.
I'm so sick of the politically correct BS that is polluting the world these days. Congrats for being a part of the poison.

This is from the same guys that formerly ran eNeighborhoods(remax.com, etc...), Andy Wooley and Greg Robertson. With their existing close ties and relationships within the real estate technology industry and major brokerages, they have an distinct advantage over any other startup in this space coming in cold. Plus, they are smart guys so even though this looks like a bit of a fail to a casual observer, if played right it could work out nicely. Why? Most people use a combination of websites to search for the right home to buy and currently there is no place to centrally manage the listings that you are interested in, let alone one that monitors them and keeps their status updated.

This is a good move for the CSM. A weekly magazine can better highlight the long-form news features that they are known for and significantly reduce their headcount and production costs along the way. I would agree that they would have to be one of the more progressive print media companies out there and they will certainly have advantages if they can keep up their editorial quality while maintaining profitability in this hybrid magazine/online format.

Chris - i hope I passed the test at BlogWorld! I did have Louis Gray as my wingman which probably helped. ;) I would also add that especially in the case where one of the people may think that you want something from them (publicity, business opportunity, etc)one shouldn't be clingy. I prefer to go for long term relationships which means they can start slow and grow. I guess i did okay at BlogWorld as I came home with a ridiculous stack of business cards.

Brilliant post. I would say that the early adopter crowd in the valley and elsewhere does has value as they can help you shake down your site really well in the beginning. But you have to be mindful that if you are looking for a larger more mainstream, or as we like to say, a "normal people" audience, you will not please all the geekorati all the time, they might not get why it is not employing 15 different APIs and you have to be okay with that. These users can also skew your site to a tech focus, if there is a lot of user interaction (like ours) and that can put off normal people from getting engaged when they do encounter the site. It's all about balance.

in louisgray.com: Is There Less Funding Or Are Startups Just Cheaper? on louisgray.com
I think that it is easier to start-up these days as initial costs can be kept fairly low through development. Where bootstrapping really kind of hits the wall is when you are looking to scale and market. For most smaller teams that are working on passion and hopefully a good idea, it is generally speaking unsustainable without additional funds to make it a real business and more than just another website. You get to a point where you need to give full time attention to the project to really make it go somewhere. For some this happens faster than others and depends on the founding team. Luckily I am not at that point right now, however I also see a light at the end of the tunnel - which definitely helps.

Scott, that is a very good point that I was trying to avoid. The process of a startup and when to get funding is an interesting topic. I would agree with you as well, startups will need funding once they really try making it into a business and the full time attention is required. I also doubt that you have much time before you need to make that decision :)
