in Playing Safe on Sui Generis
I think education, especially high school education, is something no one is willing to experiment with because everyone's really sensitive about their children's future. So, I'm not sure how you can actually change it. Even joining a school with a non A-level syllabus like NUS High requires a major leap of faith for most local parents.

Derrick Kwa Well, there are (I think) definitely *some* people who will be willing to. They would be in the minority, but they are there. And in my mind, it's a question of being enabling that community and proving that the status quo isn't the only way.

Personally think high school education is fucked up. There should be more free time and independent learning. Check out http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/sugata_mitra... if you haven't already.

Derrick Kwa Yeah, I completely agree with you. The question is, how do we go from just saying all this to actually doing something about it...?

in On finding interesting Ubiquity commands… on Ben Atkin's Weblog
Agree with everything you say. I want to see more powerful commands too, beyond just pure search commands. Part of the solution for this is categorizing commands. Another thing we are also adding is the ability to create your own search commands using another command. This is good for the user because it is simpler to create your own searches rather than subscribing to others' search command.

in Working Fast on Office 2.0 on Scobleizer
All the points Chris makes are totally valid as general oppositions to using Office 2.0 apps. But that does not mean that they are valid for a specific app say Google Docs.

Google Docs is very reliable. You can export all the docs out of it. And how about integration? With the ever-increasing number of APIs, it is going come sooner rather than later.

So, I believe when you consider the costs and benefits (free & great collaboration features), even today, Google Docs is (almost) better than MS Office. Just wait a couple more years and the situation will be completely different. As Mary points out, MS Office is definitely not the future.

in An open source Twitter client? (Scripting News) on Scripting News
Do you mean a twitter client (like twhirl or twiiferic) or a twitter clone that is open source?

I would love to build a open source twitter clone. But then again it's about the people and API apps, etc and I can't think of a way to duplicate these. Oh... you should also check out http://bitlog.org/ which is a twitter clone by John Resig (which he hopes to one day open source). Anyway, I'm all for writing a Twitter clone that is meant to serve users and users only.

in Starting Points for Online Presence on Chris Brogan
Thanks for the great tips. Although not absolutely necessary, I think startpages like Netvibes or iGoogle are also pretty useful just to keep track of all your different accounts. I used startpages pretty heavily when I started out.

in LA Times and Mixx: Don’t get it on Mathew's comments
I agree with you on "Either way, I don’t see what there is to be gained by picking one social tool over the others." In the end, after any social media becomes big, it will eventually become like Digg. So, the only way to create a better social media site is to have something that is completely open, transparent and owned by the community.
