The socialist in me thinks that the artist's rendering already cost more than the idea is worth but the capitalist thinks that ideas like this are what makes a young child get excited enough about architectural design to get a degree and pursue design as a career.

This person might just be the one to hear God's calling to design some revolutionary type of sustainable building design that will lead people in third world countries out of mud huts.

I see a backlash from the black community if Obama is elected. Would he really be the first black president? Nope, he would be the first biracial president. It's a silly argument, but a large enough one to frustrate Al Sharpton. I love it when Al Sharpton gets frustrated.

I live on the Georgia coast and, though I know plenty of racist rednecks (even some family), please don't count me in that group. Our city (Brunswick) has a split population of black, Hispanic and white. I just see people, I don't see race.

There's a local commissioner that I would vote for if he ran for president. Sure, he's black, but he's also an honest man that I trust to make decisions that honor God and people of other faiths. I am hoping that if Obama is elected, we'd be one step closer to seeing past skin color.

My favorite part of the 4th! I joined the Army back in 1994 with the hope of blowing stuff up. As a parachute rigger, I didn't get the chance to blow stuff up, though I did watch a $100,000 hummer leave the back of an airplane at 2,500 feet and plummet to its death. One of the straps holding the chute to the sled failed and, well..., crash! Parts went everywhere. It's was awesome.

I can't live without my wife, Leslie Brooke. She's one-of-a-kind, so if she was taken away from me I would be alone.

While installing electronics on boats, I can't live without my Merrell Vapors. Ugly but effective. If they were stolen, I'd buy another pair in a heartbeat.

On guitar, I'm using the Ebow every set, if I can. I could live without it, but I'm glad that I don't have to.

If I may answer snowjunkie from my own experience as a former intern, you do whatever the Pastor asks to the point of wanting to quit or kill someone. That's when you (and they) REALLY find out what you're made of.

All kidding aside, I took one of those crazy scantron spiritual gift inventories years ago and it was right on, though I know that's not the case for everybody. It took interning in an area of my weakness to make me aim toward my strength.

I've listened to Rob speak every week for over four years. I've watched every Nooma video. I've been offered the chance to appear in one. I've read both his books. I attended the Everything is Spiritual tour and could have absorbed plenty more than the 2 hours that he spoke. I'm stoked about this fall's tour and hope for plenty more.

Here's the deal...I grew up congregational/denominational like plenty of you have. I've served as a Pastor in both the Southern Baptist faith, United Methodist faith and two flavors of charismatic. I've read more books about theology from all sides than I'm willing to admit. At the end of the day, what compels me to feed my hunger for more of his teaching is the narrative theology that engages me and encourages me to become a part of the kingdom now and seek the restoration of all things. Love wins. I'm not interested in playing spiritual kungfu with the Christian form of religious zealots and declaring jihad on all things not approved by (insert name of your favorite conservation evangelical here).

I loved my short stint in the Army working as a parachute rigger. My comrades thought that I lacked motivation because I didn't want to get promoted out of the "packshed" but I had a blast there. Plus, who wouldn't want to get paid to jump out of airplanes???

Leslie Brooke and I host a small group on Sunday night with about 12 to 14 people. We go through the Nooma videos and spend about an hour and a half talking about the questions in the guide. They're so effective at getting us to open up to each other, I wish Rob could put out another video every couple of weeks.

I was rehearsing at Saint Simons Community Church tonight. About halfway through, I looked over and my wife was sitting at the edge of the stage with her laptop watching you lead. She told me that To Know Your Name was her favorite. I wish I could have watched it myself.

I did catch some of The Stand. I've heard that called "the money song" for good reason. That song just rocks from beginning to end. You guys demonstrate a spirit of excellence for sure.

I would have really dug the Spanish song too. Kudos to NPCC for moving in that direction with the 12:45 service. If I were proficient in Spanish, I would jump on that opportunity in a heartbeat.

Aviom tip from today's experience:

Everyone on the rhythm section must be using Avioms at the same time or you have this microsecond latency between those in-ear and those using monitors.

...or at least that was our excuse for playing out of the pocket this weekend.

I used them for years at my former church and couldn't live without them because I had to mic my amp in the bathroom to cut the stage noise. I moved my amp behind our curtain this weekend and used the Aviom to avoid putting my guitar in the floor wedge. It appeared that my strumming was tight with the drummer when I was in-ear, but the beat was sloppy when I pulled them out and listened to the whole band in the house and/or monitors.

Next stop, bass player and the other guitar player in-ear!

Being more of an administrative type than a creative type, I've had a hard time convincing myself that my 3 month old MacBook is worth TWICE what I spent on my Dell D600. Sure it looks cool and gets more attention that a dude at the beach with a puppy, but it is just a tool to me and it certainly lacks some of the boring-work power of my Dell. (I'll expect mucho flame mail from Apple cult members now!)

I vaguely remember this Marilyn Manson quote from around the time of the Columbine shootings. He, of all people, said something about how the world isn't getting more violent, it's just getting more televised.

There is this chart in my college Sociology book that shows a decline in violent crime since the 1970's. A decline?!

Brooke and I haven't had cable in over 5 years and haven't bothered to hook "rabbit ears" up to our t.v. since we cut the cord. I'd say my morale has improved.

My all time favorite use of a projector: North Point Community Church's 10b4 video. I've never been a huge fan of the announcements section of a service since most blokes just get up there and read the bulletin to me. The 10b4 makes announcements engaging, like previews at the movies.

My second most favorite use: 1 minute countdown. I think the first time I saw that was at Church on the Move or perhaps 7|22. I went nuts with everybody else counting down the last 10 seconds and then BAM! the electric guitar player hit the first chord at 0. That's a good way to keep the worship team honest about time, which I haven't typically had a problem with, but sometimes the coffee/RedBull/Monster hasn't kicked in yet for the early service.

I read this book about the same time as I read "Evangelism Without Additives: What if sharing your faith meant just being yourself?" by Jim Henderson and immediately put the "new" techniques to action. I no longer share my faith with the car salesman style ABC (always be closing) agenda.

It was a struggle at first to become transparent enough to let people know that I didn't have all the answers. As a result though, I now have long-term maturing relationships with people that are still wrestling with faith issues, but they no longer wrestle alone.

I'm challenged by McLaren. He makes me think outside the box, fo sho.

I've followed them since the mid-90's. I'll say as a musician that they are top notch. They don't hesitate to tackle some hefty songs requiring experience and skill. They also do a good job live.

Like Weird Al, it is tough for me to listen to them casually. It's more like listening to a comedy show. When a new album comes out, you call all the friends over to listen. Then you file it until nostalgia sets in.

This reminds me of something Matthew Paul Turner wrote, possibly in the Christian Culture Survival Guide, about how to respond to folks when they hands you a demo cd/tape/8-track with the comment "The Holy Spirit gave this song to me." That's always a tough situation to be in, especially when the demo sounds more like a choir of dying animals than actual vocals.

I totally agree with the criteria, Russ. I'm 31 and Leslie Brooke is 29 and we don't have children yet. We're on family vacation this week and her 15 year old cousin brought his 13 year old girlfriend. Not in a million years would I send my 13 year old daughter across two state lines with our crazy family, much less a hormone crazed older boy. Add to that the fact that her bikini consists of a couple hankies and dental floss. I'll stop there.

This video is one of many examples of why Mark and I couldn't be good friends. If we went fishing together, he'd be swimming home. His aggressive "you could debate with me but I'd win" attitude (because he believes that he's always on the right side of the scriptures) frustrates me, but that's an issue that I have to deal with.

He typically has this glib attitude about the likelihood that he'll run people off from the church over what I would say could be considered a minor issue, the man bringing home the bacon instead of the woman, versus a major issue, an entire Christian family living off the government social programs out of choice instead of need.

Mark's teaching philosophy appears to be one in which we have to choose a side, keep a growing list of platitudes, and keep no "dead weight" around the church. Divide and conquer. I really think that he has a hard time being a man of influence if he can't be divisive and controversial at the same time.

Have you ever met a woman that had a working womb but you wouldn't let alone with a clock radio, much less a child? Ever met a man who couldn't change a starter on his car but could be the most caring and nurturing person? What of those people? Should they remain childless in order to gain God's favor?

Is there no room for those in process? If my wife is providing while I finish my masters degree am I living in sin? As T said, should my wife (let's say she's a successful attorney) quite her job to change diapers so that I can then get a job as an overworked, under appreciated and underpaid church staff member? Will that gain me more favor with God?

What of the growing suffering and injustice caused by my wife leaving a career that has a greater impact on the world than my career as a pastor in which all I do is tell folks to go do something about injustice? What if God gave her the heart to pursue the greater good in the world and He gave me a heart to wipe baby butts for a few years and teach my kids how to fish, how to read, how to get along with their friends, etc?

I agree with you, Russ. If even for just a season, I'd love to stay home and have a direct hand in raising my kids.

Maybe the love child of Mark Driscoll and Joel Osteen would be the perfect pastor.

Which reminds me, at the Saturday night gathering at Family Life Church, I wandered into the kids wing right before the worship started. Pastor Todd was really excited about showing me this water gun that he got for the kids game that night. Picture old school "Super Soaker." Since he pointed the thing at his wife, Tammy, I was more that interested in seeing how he would handle this situation.

What I didn't expect was that the nozzle shot straight sideways, meaning, into my face and the whole top half of my shirt. Now this will come as a shock to those of you that know how much of a clean freak I am, but I actually enjoyed the whole thing. It's like a light bulb came on in my 30 year old brain and said "laugh, stupid!" Which I did. For about 5 minutes.

Perhaps the next 30 years of my life can be known by historians as the "laughter period" where I decided to loosen up and have more fun.

Okay, so I'm just getting home from our Saturday night service and will get up early to serve at the other two tomorrow morning. All three of our services are mucho contemporary and identical in every way, with no effort to tame the 9:30 or jolt the 11:15.

I can identify with the "blended worship" model, but our fellowship has responded very well to everything that we throw at them, so we aim to be more progressive with our music style than other churches in our area might be.

Our guest speaker this weekend is a grandmother that sits every week with her husband, her daughter and her granddaughter, all of whom I would say qualify as fully engaged by a song like "Salvation is Here" by Hillsong United, as well as they would be Chris Tomlin's "Holy is the Lord." We haven't brought any classics out of the vault yet, but the Passion version of Jesus Paid It All is on deck for June.

A few years back, I served as the music minister at a Southern Baptist church. I'll never forget the day that my pastor advised me that the 50's small group had met in secret and made a list of hymns that they recommended be played to help "retain their membership." We made a healthy compromise and managed to somewhat reinvent some of the classics to accommodate being led on acoustic guitar instead of piano.

I suppose that is what made me value the Passion Hymn's cd so much when it came out. It is an honor to be able to carry the torch, so to speak, by holding on to the traditional music of my grandparents. It will be a greater honor to have my grandchildren ask me if I'm tired of singing Shout to the Lord when I'm in my 70's.

Our lives are a pursuit of truth, not necessarily a pursuit of profit. He proves to be a bad example in spiritual sense, but look at the enigma of someone like Donald Trump: you would be hard pressed to find someone that has filed bankruptcy more times, but he continues to rebuild his wealth every time he loses it. I'm interchanging business acumen with truth, which isn't "true," but it's too early for me to think of another example.
