This article is so right on! Thanks for posting it!

The get out of debt thing is HUGE with my wife and I. We have been preaching and teaching on it for a while with a lot of resistance. Most people I know want to argue the semantics of good debt vs. bad debt, blah blah blah.. I know that if the crap hits the fan, it will all be bad debt.

My wife and I have a modest mortgage and student loans, so we're paying about $1500 a month to banks. I know I would much rather be able to bless others rather than pay that money to financial institutions and banks.

Just like your father, I am a pharmacist, which is a great job for bad economic times. I pray that God can allow me to be a blessing to others in hard times and that He'll grant me the ability to pay down all of our loans before any kind of crisis hit.

That is really interesting.. My wife and I are being called to start up a house church.. Out of those 4 authors you listed, what books would you recommend by them?

I've been really interested by the Chinese home church model where there is no central church, just thousands and thousands of people meeting in each others home each week. Its beautiful and organic.. I wonder if anything like that could take root here in the US?

Great Post. I would think that people should actually protest more at the Democrat Convention. After all, we know what we're getting with the current batch of Republicans, however, 2 years ago the Democrats came to power in congress by leading us to believe they will get us out of this war and they've failed to deliver in any sort of way.

My wife and I committed to a diet similar to this last summer when we grew our own 'victory garden' and we have loved it. We probably only eat meat 2 or 3 times a week now and we have no regrets. I'd encourage any one to do this! Its easier than you think.

Even if this is a work of satire, some of us live under this dark threat. I live directly on the DE/MD state border and I live in constant fear that someday they will tell me that they surveyed wrong and I'm actually a Delaware resident. Truly it would be a nightmare to me.

in Exorcising Racial Demons: Part I (by Melvin Bray) on God's Politics
"i promise not to leave us at stalemate tomorrow."

Alright! I await your next segment. :)

My main concern is when we choose to define ourselves outside of Christ, we take on identities that we sometimes shouldn't. The biggest conviction God has laid on my heart is to lay aside all of my preconceived notions of who I am and solely to be a Child of God. Hopefully we can all agree that our affiliation with the kingdom comes first, then everything else a distant second.

Melvin, I would argue that our situations have much more in common than any of our differences and that is why we can critique others that may come from different backgrounds. I have traveled across the world and met people from all different cultures and it always amazes me how much more we have in common than we have different. This is what should be our focus.

Additionally, as a brother in Christ, we should have more in common than not. Therefore it is appropriate, and necessary, to critique and test his prophetic speech content against the bible and what we understand as acceptable Christian principles.

To me when we try and focus on what's different, it always drives a divide between us. The unity that is our inheritance in Christ is compromised when I'm told that other people are inherently different than me and I could never possibly understand them. I think we need to find unity and accord rather than to allow hate filled speech like Rev Wright's to drive us apart. What purpose of the kingdom is fulfilled by people like him fueling hatred against 'the white man.'

I refuse to accept the premise that if you're not part of one group then you can't possibly understand how that group could feel. Its a weak premise that is used justify the wrong actions of a group of people. I don't think anyone could reasonably talk about white supremacy churches and the "white experience" and have understanding for their bigotry. Whites and non-whites can look at that type of preaching and see it is just not truth. The same goes for the bigotry that Rev. Wright espouses.

I know everyone here loves Obama, but you can't let that blind your judgment. Seriously, this Rev. Wright is not preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ when he 'prophetically' tells us that the US government invented AIDS and if he's not preaching the Gospel of Jesus, then he has no business being in the pulpit.

in Why America Needs the Uncensored Prophetic Voice of the Black Church (by Adam Taylor) on God's Politics
Rick, do you reject your forgiveness in Christ then? How many works of racial forgiveness must one perform before we've earned our salvation?

You say that Walter Williams does not have the power to speak for the black community, and I would agree with you. No one has the power to speak for any race, so this nonsense that Rev. Wright is speaking on behalf of black people is idiotic.

What Dr. Williams said at the end is right though, we need to stop acting like fools and just be people to each other. I can't make up for the fact that other white people have done bad things, all I can do is be me and not do those things myself.

Over and over from everyone here, I keep hearing that whites should be guilty for all the atrocities we've committed. Where is the grace of Christ in that feeling? Look at the grace Paul was able to live in after personally killing Christians. He had to realize his forgiveness and move on from there. People like Jeremiah Wright want to constantly remind us of our sins and keep us in bondage.

So given our freedom in Christ, and given the fact that our national leader Bill Clinton apologized for the sins of slavery, I give you this Amnesty and Pardon, written by the African American Economist, Walter Williams.

Proclamation of Amnesty and Pardon Granted to
All Persons of European Descent
http://www.gmu.edu/departments/economics/wew/gift.html

Whereas, Europeans kept my forebears in bondage some three centuries toiling without pay,

Whereas, Europeans ignored the human rights pledges of the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution,

Whereas, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments meant little more than empty words,

Therefore, Americans of European ancestry are guilty of great crimes against my ancestors and their progeny.

But, in the recognition Europeans themselves have been victims of various and sundry human rights violations to wit: the Norman Conquest, the Irish Potato Famine, Decline of the Hapsburg Dynasty, Napoleonic and Czarist adventurism, and gratuitous insults and speculations about the intelligence of Europeans of Polish descent,

I, Walter E. Williams, do declare full and general amnesty and pardon to all persons of European ancestry, for both their own grievances, and those of their forebears, against my people.

Therefore, from this day forward Americans of European ancestry can stand straight and proud knowing they are without guilt and thus obliged not to act like damn fools in their relationships with Americans of African ancestry.

Walter E. Williams, Gracious and Generous Grantor

I will say this. A lot of people are putting words in Rev Wrights mouth. He is an intelligent man who is fully capable of explaining his positions on these matters, but for some reason he has chosen to stay silent.

I would love to hear him explain his statements to fellow believers. As a rational and thoughtful white Christian, when I hear him say that the country is run by a bunch of 'rich white men' or that the government invented AIDS to destroy blacks, I can't help but think that he sounds pretty racist. Why isn't he coming up to defend his positions when the national spotlight is on him.

Ted Voth Jr, at what point can we whites be given grace for our past sins? Why is the grace of Christ not sufficient for our race and what could we possibly do now to attone for those injustices. We are Christians are called to forgive and love our enemies, even if they are (were) oppressive white dudes, so please in the name of Christ, give up the hate for us.

I acknowledge that in the past great injustices occurred, but a lot has changed in the past 45 years since the heyday of the civil rights movement. Its important to call out racism where you see it and its pretty obvious to me that Rev Wright is racist against whites.

Its sad to see people try and defend this kind of speech. When I hear him go off on the "white man" and how we supposedly rule the world or other such nonsense, it makes my stomach cringe. Thats not prophecy, its racism.

If you want to know why Sunday is the most segregated time in America, look to churches like this one. I as a white person would never feel welcomed in a body like this. There is nothing that represents the inclusively of Christ in a message like that.

Lastly, just because a pastor considers himself a prophet does not mean he is one. The pastor of Westboro Baptist church considers himself a prophet to the church, but I think most of us would be critical of his style and the content of his message. In my mind, I put both of those "prophets" in the same category; people that misrepresent the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

in A Proposal for “Illegal Aliens” (by Tony Campolo) on God's Politics
Tony,
Great post. I think its important to find what a good Christian response to the immigration problem.

I used to carry a lot of judgment against illegal immigrants until what I saw what my sister had to do to bring her husband that she met overseas to this country. It was over a full year of jumping through an seemingly endless set of hoops and paying tons of fees before he was finally allowed conditional entry into the country. After that I had some understanding on why people circumvent the laws.

I like the idea of a wide gate and a high fence. That seems reasonable enough for all sides to agree on, but they probably won't.
