I always tell the same thing, build it yourself!

Meetup's are a great way too. The Nashville geek breakfast now has
about 60-70 people each month. I've had to split it to two seating
tines because of the number of people. It's growth has been wonderful.

The trick is that people need to make the effort to attend something.
First step is getting out of the house.

Cheers!
D

Re: How To Co-Author a New York Times Best Seller: Step 1

You know, I was sitting in Julien's session and overheard your name, so knew that you were with us in spirit, if not in body. A few moments before, when Julien was discussing the value of coming to things like Podcamp, I too was marveling at how serendipitous meeting people at these events can be. I wish I could get to more conferences out of town, but even attending events in your local community, and making an effort to reach out to new people is a very good thing. Because, you never know what fabulous connection you might make with another person that could lead to a life changing friendship, association or event. All hail meet ups!

Re: Let Them Know

Thanks Adele. I just started reading the book (which comes with red vinyl, a
CD and the movie!), which I bought at the screening last night, about the
history of Youth Brigade. I had no idea that the Stern brothers were
actually born in Toronto! Too cool.
http://www.byorecords.com/index.php?page=band_n...

Cheers,
Dave

Re: Let Them Know

Dave, I'm a wee bit older and remember buying imports from the Record Peddlar when it was on Queen St. E, between Church and Jarvis. I loved that place. Old creaky wooden floors and the smell of the plastic dust jackets mixing with, well, dust. One of the great early bars was the Turning Point on Bloor Street, upstairs. And I remember dragging my bass there after lessons to drink cheap beer (underage) and watch fledgling punk bands. Toronto was a great incubator for punk (and all types of alternative music, actually) and it's definitely left it's mark on me and how I approach life too.

PS - love the new blog look, Dave! I'll miss you at #pcmtl this weekend.

Re: 2 Years of Tweeting!

Looking forward to April for you. Twitter certainly has come a long way, eh?

D

Re: 2 Years of Tweeting!

Awww, Dave, I'm always happy to get your Tweets! Happy Twitterversary my friend. (My second Twitterversary is in April.) I look forward to many more Tweets from you to come :)

Re: A Twitter Debate with James Whatley

Sorry I'm late to this party. Hi Ewan - I'm Adele McAlear. I'm a marketer based in Montreal and a friend of James' from Phreadz. Now you know me :) Pleased to meet you. I'll endeavour to send a few non sequitur tweets in your direction so that you don't feel you're missing out ;) Great discussion with James and in your comments. For me, Twitter is a way to learn, help, share, meet, collaborate, connect, and converse with amazing people that I would not otherwise have the opportunity to know. Everyone uses it differently.

You can experiment with the @ replies in your account settings to filter the noise, if that's what you're looking for. You can choose to not see @ replies directed towards people you do not follow. However, seeing those @ replies is also a good way to find new people to follow. You never know, you may just see something or someone interesting in one of those tweets that makes the rest of the chatter totally worthwhile.

@adelemcalear

Re: I loved BarCamp Nashville or How you helped two impoverished schools

Thanks Adele. I actually used ChipIn, but still had to pay the service fees.
I should mention that *I* didn't have to pay it, it automatically was paid
from each payment. Beth actually contributed to it, she was the one who
inspired me after her session at Gnomedex.

Cheers.
D

Re: I loved BarCamp Nashville or How you helped two impoverished schools

Great work Dave! Have you investigated ChipIn? I know that by making a payment to ChipIn through my PayPal account, I have a fee to pay to PayPal, but I'm not sure what the recipient of the ChipIn funds has to pay. You may also want to contact Beth Kanter @kanter because she has likely tried it all and can give you the skinny on what you're after.

Re: I’ve been hired by…

Dave!

We never did catch up this summer, but I so happy to hear about your new gig! Griffin makes great gear and I think you bring a great mix of skills and experience to their team. Congratulations and all the best to you there :)

Re: Why I'm Blue

Thanks, Adele. I'm sure that you will do an outstanding job shepherding that giant's social media efforts and setting the gold standard to which other large corporations aspire to. But, uh, no pressure.

This seems especially appropriate, given your new employer: May the road rise up to meet you and the wind be ever at your back.
