Although, there was a flurry of companies entering this space in 2008 and 2009, the sector has failed to gain traction with individuals or corporations. Much like life insurance, but perceived as far less important, only a small segment of society is willing to take action to prepare their digital affairs for end of life. And what is typical for those who do make arrangements is a lack of interest in maintaining account information after curation has been set up.

In the corporate world, having a policy around account owners' end of life usually falls under general governance digital accounts. If the accounts have been set up using company domain email addresses, they may be easy enough to access. However, if employees have set up accounts using 3rd party services like Gmail, unless they've shared their passwords to those accounts, the company will likely not be able to have access.

Another entry in the reanimation category is VirtualEternity.com, but their site announces that they are upgrading the technology for their "intellitars". Culturally, i think it would require an enormous shift for people to feel comfortable interacting with their deceased friends and family in this way.

Re: Toronto Startup Event List Fall 2012

As much as it's great to see FounderFuel in this list, it's in Montreal. :) Though, that's a great reason to come here and take in some of our amazingly active startup community. I'm so happy to have gotten to know you and am thrilled for the new opportunities that Aetna brings. You are going to leave a void at R6, but you should be very proud of what you accomplished there and the team that you built. Here's to the next phase (for both of us). *cheers!*

Re: Sad News - Sprouter is Shutting Down

Erin - you did Sprouter and Sarah proud in your role. There are plenty of ways, as evidenced here in your comments, to be gender neutral and/or to use both genders (individually) throughout your text. I assure you that, as a woman, when you say "he" I don't interpret it as "he or she" or "she or he" like you say you mean. I just don't.

Re: Project Reclaim: or, how I learned to start worrying and love my data.

I research and speak about digital legacy issues and this is a great approach for people to take. The problem is, your knowledge and expertise of how and where data is stored, and what you need to do to move it around, is not representative of the "average" person. The problem for them is simply understanding the issue of access and ownership. When simple to use, all-in-one tools for data management are in place, the "average" user will have a much easier time of it. I'm interested in how you progress.

Re: PostRank has been acquired by Google!

Wow! And, because of my special research on digital legacy, I've attracted some sponsors who are helping to offset the cost of the event for me. In exchange, I must attend sessions pertinent to that research. So, I can't just let the wind take me as I did in 2008.

I noticed in 2010 that the vibe of the event had changed considerably from 2008 when we first attended. I was quite surprise at how drastically it had changed. Still, I can't think of a better way to geek 'n' schmooze :)

(And, just a finer point - I took that shot of you, CC and Rocky at the 16 Bit party.
