Yeah, I saw the documentary on this a few months ago. Not sure if it was Planet Earth, but those are Birds of Paradise, I think, in Indonesia? Sorry I can't remember, it was a very good film, The photographer was in a hidey-hole for something like 14 hours a day.

I totally agree. That speech gave me chills. It gave my wife and I a big sense of relief. That's not saying that Obama is necessarily the be all end all to the country's problems, but there seems to be a lot more hope now.

We'll have to see what happens.

Now as far as McCain, his concession speech was very well done and I have to say quite classy.

Some of the pundits were saying that the economy killed him. I don't think so. From the perspective of a republican that never just votes for the party blindly, I have to say that McCain failed to convince me that he was the right leader for this country at this time. His talk of voting with the current president 90% of the time didn't help his cause. This country needs a radical change from the last eight years, not more of the same.

But the biggest thing that tore me away from the GOP was McCain's choice of running mate. Sarah Palin horrified me. She seems like a cartoon from the Dark Ages instead of a leader. For me, she is what killed a vote for McCain over anything else.

Obama won me over early in the primaries, lost me later and then won me back at the end. The reason? He seems honest and speaks like a real human being, he has the aura of a great leader, and the biggest thing, if you watch him interact with people, he genuinely listens to them especially if they disagree with him.

Now that his party has control of Congress and the White House, they have a huge opportunity. I hope they don't waste it. They need to repeal the Patriot Act and FISA and get the country steered away from the police state it was turning into under the Bush administration.

in A Response to “Mac Elitism and Snobbery” on dmiessler.com | grep understanding

I've been using both platforms for about five years. I'm a desktop Support Technician and I only have Windows now because I have to.

Vista is a flop, we still use XP. Honestly, I actually like XP, but I wouldn't have it if I didn't have too.

I have been our anti virus guy for the last two years, and it's not just the platform, the products are insecure as well. IE is just plain awful at security. I have a PC on the bench right now that has been horribly violated by Smitfraud and Vundo.

If I could have everyone use Firefox we'd be better off. But we have too many applications that use ActiveX or are BHOs and they require IE.

I have never had to rebuild any of my Macs from failures, just because I felt I needed to or I was changing a hard drive configuration. I have to rebuild MS PCs all the time.

Other MS PC issues: Corrupted profiles (My home PC profile corrupted itself this morning), corrupted Winsock Providers (happening frequently), MALWARE, malware, malware. I spend a lot of my day cleaning up malware.

I know that people say there are more viruses for Windows because it's much more widespread, but it's like MS doesn't even try to stop it.

That said, I am not a Mac fanboy. They do plenty to irritate me, especially lately. But, I do think you get your money's worth for Macs.

Well, I'm not getting into that right now, it's a long drawn out argument and there have been so many flame wars.

Also, I have to say I am more than pleased with Linux now and use that as well.

Windows is just something that I'm probably always going to have to know and support.

still hanging on to my G5 dualie for as long as I can, bought it 6months before they announced the Intel migration. TY Apple! It's still a good PC and has been for years, but If I could throw away $16000 I'd max out the new Powermac.

in 9 Lesser Known Safari Features Worth Switching For on dmiessler.com | grep understanding

I actually migrated over to Firefox last night to check it out on Mac, to compare against Safari.

I just started playing with FF Extensions on my Windows PCs and I like them. FF seems a hair quicker. Both are solid browsers and have about the same support, well at least to me.

I'm actually thinking that I might have bought my last Mac. I'm really liking Linux and I am a little tired of Apple's hijinx in the last few years. Their software is very invasive and the DRM is annoying. We have three iPods at home and they can't move between computers(iTunes Libraries). I am thinking about a PPC Linux.

But I have a lot of half finished music written in Garageband...

Yes. That's something I've been using lately too. Especially when someone told me about some South American spider that is big enough to eat chickens.

in Building a Virtual Server for the House on danielmiessler.com | grep understanding

What about noise? I had a Dell 1650 in my home office for a while and it sounded like a Cessna taking off. I couldn't keep it on even with the door to my home office closed, it was so irritating.

I was thinking about a powerful Desktop as a VM server.

Where do you keep your servers to avoid the sound issues?
