Do you think he may have also accepted money at some point of time or the other for a review, directly or indirectly. (Indirectly - as in they probably bought an ad spot and so he wrote about them)

Does advertising with a site also generate a certain amount of goodwill? Possibly
Does mentioning a service such as a feedreader generate a certain amount of goodwill (default subscriptions)? Possibly
Then again linking to people generally get you more links in return, that is how the blogosphere tends to work, but Google seem to think the only currency that affects them is $$$

I hear of darin twice. Once when he bought an ad for traffic on John Chow and now when John Cow talks of this scam.

It's not bad marketing, in fact it's the best form of marketing there is.

Their algorithm was built to give more weight to relevant links pointing to sites. But wait don't try to make any money like that, because that's our job. Not yours. You can eat straw can't you?
Anyway, it's a hypocritical stance like you said.

"If they have the ability to penalize for them - why can't they just take any value away from them?"
Because they can't. It's probably not how their algorithm was set up. Remember it is all about the backrub philosophy, you scratch mine and I scratch yours.
Except now I think it's, We {Google} scratch who we want!

Just curious, Where did you get the -1 and -2 figures from?

Good question Hyder. I got PR3 in the last update, which happened in April. A few weeks ago I was dropped to a 2 about the same time that Andy dropped to a 4. That was the -1.
Now I dropped again and sit at PR1. That's the -2. Google hasn't updated global toolbar rank yet. If they did, mine would have to be higher.

My search engine traffic levels have remained the same. I actually feel quite honored to be slapped for this "invisible" reason to lower PageRank along with some of the top blogs and sites on the same day. I sell links to make money, shame on me!
Bottom line, the future is clearly not tied together with Google for a lot of bloggers and websites from here on forth.

But yet his RSS readers stay on, true the word may not be used globally as natural as it may come out in Ireland. Then again, I think Americans use more "derogatory" terms {aimed at the ethnic background or color of people} than anybody else, anywhere in the world.
I think that's more offensive than the C word. Not saying it's cool to say it on a blog though. But then again, it's his blog. Read it if you want, leave if you don't. Simple.

Well so far its been working for me. I've only used my blog to rank higher for keywords and I'm up there, that's why I provided proof it works.
Of course as I stated, it helps if your blog is already well linked from other sites. Has natural rankings as well and is at least a couple of months old with some sort of PR. The higher the better.

Man, I should have never offered Tyler my design services. It was me that pointed him towards SOS factory, after he said he had his theme being done by someone else already.
That's not saying he wouldn't have done such a thing if I hadn't told him about SOS. Oh well, time to move on people. There are bigger fish to fry.

Sergio your work is the bomb man! Keep up the good work.
Realize what you are worth and charge it. Of course, don't go crazy now with prices.
