I dig that you used the example of being an indie musician! Many of my best friends are in bands big and small and I've encouraged all of them to use more social media. One of them is doing a great, great job of it: Grizzly Bear. Check out their amazing blog (grizzly-bear.net/blog) and friend them up on MySpace. They do it so, so right.

Don't forget other important social media tools for musicians - buzz tracking tools like music blog and MP3 aggregators like Hype Machine and Elbo.ws and music social networks like Mog.com and iLike.com.

I use both self-hosted WordPress and Blogger, and I have to say in defense of Blogger that is is VERY easy to use. The only major complaint I have about the platform is the lack of trackback information in your dashboard. I love that when I log into one of my WordPress blogs, I see who is linking to me and where. Surprised that Blogger defaults (I believe) to have trackbacking within a post turned off.

Hey Chris. I just stopped following you on Twitter. And speaking for those of us who quit... here's the thing. There's a lot of noise out there. Adding to it doesn't help anything. I try not to Twitter more than 5-10 times a day. Getting one from one person every ten minutes it just too much. When I go to my Twitter home, all I see is posts by you. It's annoying. It's bacn. I already subscribe to your RSS, so why would I want the double-loaded info?

I love what you have to say. I love your blog. I'm just keeping my Twitter to myself. ;) Thanks.

Thanks for this great post, Chris. I just got hired recently as a 'Community Manager' here at XLNTads.com. It's great to read your thoughts on strategies because it makes me feel like I know my own job better. Or that I can do it better.

The awesome thing about being a professional community manager is that it's such a new field. We're treading on new ground and that's so exciting!
