For instance, microloans with interest promote profit-making activities and saving, which both lead to stability and security for the poor. A donation of the same microloan amount probably wouldn't have the same outcome

Also, when I mentioned "innovative products" I wasn't referring to iPhones, MacBooks etc. I was referring to products and services made specifically for people in extreme poverty. Products and services that will help them connect with information and the leveraging power of the internet etc.

Products and services like mobile internet, mobile banking and mobile phones. Right now, there is a huge gap between rich and poor because the devices that connect people to the internet are really expensive. The internet provides a leveraging access to information, people connection and low-overhead. This is a potent mix to put in the hands of people in extreme poverty.

Re: Can Music Artists Give the Middle Finger to Offline Major Labels?

Hahaha. I totally agree with you about inefficient communication killing micro-businesses (and anyone for that matter).

The opportunity costs of riding a bus or train to the city or a distant village to get something or talk to someone is horrendously debilitating to the under-$2-per-day crowd.

One of the biggest examples would be banks. It's hard to find a conventional brick-and-mortar bank in rural areas. So, if you are a smart villager and want to put your small earnings in savings you have to take a whole day off work to get to the bank.

This brings us back to your point of good communication (phones) bringing benefit to the bottom-of-the-pyramid crowd.

Let's hope that telecom companies find innovative ways to put beneficial mobiles (preferably w/ internet connectivity) into the hands of the under-$2 crowd with payment plans that make sense for their extremely small and volatile daily wages.

Re: Spit Challenge: Fill Tube With 2.5ml of Saliva in Under 146sec

Mark & Stephen, taking 5min would have been smarter.

did you guys have dry mouth as bad as i did after?? i had to drink water all night.

Re: Spit Party Photos

Hey Henry, I hadn't checked out the CrunchBase site lately. Sorry Tina.

NBA.com makes US service providers pay them so their subscribers can watch games on NBA.com or ESPN360. Looks like they might have extended that interesting business model to Ireland as well.

Who provides your Internet service at home? Comcast delivers my high-speed Internet.

Re: How To Watch Live Streaming NBA Games Online

RGT, where do you live? When he became CEO in the late 90's he started hiring tons of grads from top schools. Nor do I know anything about CLIA except for what I read on their limited-on-info site this morning.

The only thing that counts for me is that the personal genome service that I've chosen, 23andMe, continuously does homework on the labs, equipment etc that they use in order to provide me with optimal service.

As a consumer, that's all I can ask for. I'm not at all a professional in the genome or medical world. So, its hard for me to deduce that CLIA-certified results are any different than the 99.9% accurate lab that 23andMe was previously using.

All I can do is count on 23andMe to use their internal accountability systems on the labs, equipment etc they use.

Re: I’ve Never Viewed My Medical Records. It probably can by be done by a case-to-case basis with your own doctor, but I don't know if MDs have to legally do it. They also understand that a lot of people in the global market don't have access to the Internet and mobile technology and they want to change that.

This can only be good news for Nicaraguans living out in rural towns.

Re: Tata Nano: $2500 Car For Developing Countries

Joey, I think the Tata Nanos are only sold in India.

You can find more info on the Tata Nano site: http://tatanano.com.
