I need to give them more of a chance ... I love the 30 second song Karen did for the shoe commercial but saw them on SNL last weekend and wasn't too impressed.

I had something additional to add to this discussion. To preface this, I don't really have too much involvement or knowledge of charitable organizations as my preference is to do things on an individual level.
But, recently I was listening to a broadcast of This American Life that in part dealt with two New Yorkers who left their finance sector jobs to go homeless and pursue their dream of writing poetry. This meant that in order to clothe themselves, eat, and have shelter that they were totally depedent on various charities. I can't say that I agree with their course of action, but, I'll say that these guys are intimately aquainted with charitable organizations. As such, one thing they said, really stood out to me. They remaked that if it weren't for the churches, the homeless people in New York would starve. They then recounted how lacking in comparison similar governmental systems were. So from these two homeless guy's perspective, faith-based charities were absolutely critical to the health & welfare of the impoverished in New York.
And this reminded me of something that the Roman Emperor Julian had written. At the time Julian was trying to convert the empire from Christianity back to its Pagan roots. The Christian's notable charity was making support for this difficult. Julian lamented to his Pagan High Priest, "the atheist Galileans feed not only their (poor) but ours also"
Personally, I've got serious issues with the Church System and will readily criticize that they are not doing enough charitably in keeping with the principles of Jesus and the example of the early Christian Church. This may seem a bit radical, but, I also believe that Christians should be totally seperate from the Government, not even holding non-profit 501(c)(3) status. At the same time I will have to admit that the charitable services they do provide are greatly beneficial and vital to welfare of society. I can see why the Government would have an interest in supporting these programs.

Ryan,
The thing I've been noticing about Mr. Obama is that he is a very gifted politician who is very conscious of electability. His current pandering to evangelicals, expanding on Bush's programs, to me is similar to when he recently spoke to Jewish voters and implied in certain terms that he would be willing to keep the current administration's all-options-are-on-the-table approach to dealing with Iran. Honestly, I don't have hopes that we will see much change if he is elected.
Don't blame me I voted for Kodos!

I think in many cases Presidential "faith" is really just a political move. The religious position of George W certainly helped his election; although, his actions are decidedly antichrist in my opinion.
The real question, I wonder is, how many presidents are secretly occultists? The ceremonies and rites of Skull & Bones and Bohemian Grove, which have presidential membership, are rooted in ancient mystery religions and worship of ancient gods, such as Molech.
Didn't know if you knew this but Eisenhower was raised as one of Jehovah's Witnesses; but left later in life.

David,
That's the thing - with everyone it will be different. With me it was the UN that started it all and later there was other stuff after that sealed the deal, such as 607v587. With others it might be something else - maybe blood transfusions. And then, some people will up and leave without any particular reason at all.
I was thinking more about this last night - about belief in general.
Why do we believe what we believe? Why can we be confident in our beliefs? If I can expand this beyond the JW's - for instance, what could I say to Ryan to get him to believe in God? Conversely, what could he say to get me to accept atheism? Is it possible that we could change beliefs? Is it likely? How much do others impact our beliefs? Do they wield more influence in reinforcing our current beliefs than in changing our beliefs?

Enjoyed reading your thoughts on it. I had someone contact me through my blog and asked, "My daughter has a friend who is a JW - what can I say to bring them to Jesus?" So I thought about it, and thought about it, and basically came to the same conclusion. Basically, that the JW are so programmed to view everything with suspicion and reject anything that contradicts that there is no magic silver bullet. I was talking to one guy and he was asking what he could say to JW's that come to his door - he related how a couple came to his door and he told them, "You're in a cult" because he really wanted them to think. I just thought, they probably left even more convinced than before. In the end, I just told him to print out the UN letter and give it to the next JW that comes to his door. But even at that, I know many JW's that know about the UN and yet still remain.

I'm obviously biased to the other extreme, but my impression of the Expelled trailer was that the documentary was geared more toward the idea that within the Scientific community there is hostility toward those scientists & researchers who challenge Darwinism.
Now I'm admittedly not into science nor do I understand much about it - but it would seem to me that having an open scientific community where even the most established theories can be challenged would be healthy.

Ryan,
When you get online we'll have to exchange "friend" codes - so that our Mii's can come and visit.
We are going on a car-trip this weekend, meeting friends for our private memorial. I'm gonna download and burn your new CD - been saving it for the car-ride.
Take care mate,

As a follower of Jesus I would rather have an ethical atheist in public office over a Christian any day.
Of course that is just me.

I initially poked fun at Rebekah for wanting to camp out for one on the opening release day. I thought no way it would sell out and even if it did surely we'd be able to just pick one up in the coming weeks. Well needless to say I'm glad she ignored my advice, fought the cold and sleep and scored one on day 1. Now that's a WIFE!!
It's good stuff. I hope you can get one soon.
We've been using iSight camera to make stealth videos of each other playing WarioWare and looking beyond silly ... Coming soon to YouTube if we ever get ticked off at each other enough to upload them!

$500 - $600? That's quite a jump from freebie phone! But I guess the SLVR was a bridge ...
We are not phone people either but their is that materialistic, fleshy part of me really wants this. Must ... go ... pray.
