I definitely agree that the companies need to start focusing on the e-commerce side of things. I also think that the advertising on social apps has limitations to it.

I would think some companies are scared of advertising on "social" sites. Who knows what type of personal content the "name your big company here" ad could be right next to.

The advertising I like is partnerships such as the third parties tied in with Flickr that offer me creative ways to extend my social site usage. I hate Facebook's random ads that show up telling me to check out Blockbuster online or whatever other pitch. I can't be in the minority on that.

Great post Chris. I have only been using it for a bit but have definitely found it useful. I don't find it distracting (using twhirl) because I think my mind was already so used to being able to scan the pop ups quick for anything of interest or ignore when the time isn't there. I've mainly started using it to explore new blogs and it's easier to see breaking news instead of scanning Reader all the time.
