in Does Social Media Make Us Better People? on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
With all due respect, you know that social media is merely a communication tool
like every other. Let's not fool ourselves. There are the myspace murder
incidents, the ability to communally ostracize someone publicly has great
repercussions. It just amplifies current social values.

Undoubtedly, there are numerous benefits to social media. Having people's private
lives come out has positives and negatives...

The question shouldn't be "what can we do to use social media to bring out the
best sides of ourselves, and minimize the negative stuff"...

And that's a good question - something that I haven't spent close to enough time
on.

(It's mostly been spent simply using the social media ;) )

in The Average Position Metric For Keywords Is Pretty Mediocre on The ClickEquations Blog
I'm guessing that some of this data is really a data hog. I'm personally thankful for the degree of information I get from google right now, knowing it eats up data storage.

in Yahoo’s SEO Manager Teaches You How To Get More Search Engine Traffic - The Tony Adam Interview on Mixergy, Startup School
Thanks so much for the interview!

BTW, the widget bait has been banned by Google once. Using your keywords in your anchor text is an amazing overlooked method to use for ranking.

I use a cool coworking site out here - www.blankspaces.com. These things are a godsend. I do think that alot of companies will cut extranous costs of offices, and go to more freeflowing planning...

in Jesse Stay On How To Raise Your Profile Online. Video Tip. on Mixergy, Startup School
Andrew,

I'd be interested to hear more specifics... I do do a little social media, I bump into some people occassionally, but it's just a heck of alot. I sometimes log into my google reader, often to sphinn, and almost never to friendfeed... and I don't drive much traffic to my blog, and nor do I have alot of relationships, rather keeping to a few - mainly business partners...

Of course, I would like to do more of social media - I'd love to hear what actionable idea you took out of this interview.

Actually, incentivizing users is something the credit card industry and the retail industries use to build brand loyalty... It's effective, and the difference in search results is small enough, that it's possible the strategy can work.

in Qumana vs Ecto vs Performancing for Firefox Blog Posting Tools on ContentRobot - The Blogging & WordPress Experts
I tried scribefire, but I've got so many plugins for wordpress that I can find links pictures and more from within the editor, I find the editor the fastest way to go, even though I have to copy and paste links.

in The Search Engines: Friend or Foe? on The ClickEquations Blog
Craig, you're right - and thanks for reminding us. However, some of the transparency did make things suck too... Remember doing the bidding game with overture? Bidding right under the comptetitor? It was fun, but knowing the exact numbers of your competition sucked...

Maybe I really am drinking the "Click Forensics Kool-Aid" to the extreme - have an external agency monitor the data.

But altogether, I don't think much will change. Either way, the market will price itself to the budget that advertisers can make search work for them.

in Where the Rubber Meets the Road: B2B Companies Struggle to Find Their Fit with Blogging on Marketing Pilgrim
Although having a background in direct marketing, I agree that blogging is one of the most effective ways of communicating with your customers.

Additionally, for my clients its a cornerstone of SEO. That I think is a compelling reason to blog in and of itself.

Methinks that Yahoo+AOL might be complementary. Insulted that you think it's stupid. I do know that there are a bunch of stupid figureheads in charge of AOL, but if it would be spun off of Time warner, it may have a chance to turn around.

I think that this is a smart step by the Los Angeles Times. My main complaint with them - and other newspapers is realizing that their job is not to be the "sole producers of quality content and insight" anymore.

There are many sources of quality media. Their job is to be the focus of the conversations (and to dig up information that most of us who didn't go to journalism school can't).

Wait, I think I know what types of sites create conversations... I think it's called social bookmarking???

Although the Mixx.com acquisition was probably just a strategic one for traffic, I think that they could potentially take the social components and it to their site
