Sites built on these databases will never fair well in google.

Example:

http://www.google.com/search?q=%22An+abyss+can+...

Click 'repeat the search with the omitted results included' to see the number of sites with that content.

Only a few sites shows up, due to the duplicate content.

There's always the alternative, scrape and sell a database... £25 a time will probably make you more in the long run too. I wouldn't do that myself, for ethical reasons!

My move would be to create a number of small sites with unique content... usually "rewritten/combined/improved upon" from content elsewhere. Stick some adsense on them, keep them for 3-6 months (until they get rankings and traffic) and flog them for a higher price.

Obviously in the meantime you'd need to gain some links to gain PR and an increase in rankings....

Not that I'd do that either, because I can't be bothered ;) - The refresh of Gig Lovers is coming soon but it's taking a long time because I do every part of it and I don't have any spare time! :/

To be honest I always find IE6 to be the pain. IE7 is an excellent browser ;)

Funnily enough, I almost responded to your latest Beer Chief post about getting a dedicated server - because you'll need one for that (although this blog and BC could easily co-exist without problem on the same server). This blog is really slow sometimes - but you'll get that with shared hosting.

I think if you use Gmail to send from your domain you'll have (added to 'From Name:' field) something like "On behalf of email@gmail.com". Or at least, it was when I thought about using it... but didn't because I don't particularly like that.

You might like to check out Google's Webmaster Tools (http://www.google.com/webmastertools) if you haven't already.

It features some nice crawl stats, inner pagerank details (not values, but medium,low,high,unranked), incoming/external link details, anchor text etc.

The iPhone, imo, is pointless... a phone is a phone. The iPhone is a "media center" - I don't want my phone to be that, I want my phone to me a phone. I have my iPod and my stereo to play music. The Nokia N95 is much better at being a phone than the iPhone (and more useful too)

The "iPod touch" looks good - but is too small (8GB & 16GB), overpriced, and touch screen? No thanks, I wouldn't want mine, or anyone elses, greasy fingers touching it!
