in Some readers upset over our endorsement on The Editor's BlogDo I think newspaper endorsements are appropriate? No. Will that ever change? No. Will I stop reading The Telegraph/Asheville Citizen-Times/Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Union Leader, etc. because of endorsements? No.
As you stated, people will cancel (or threaten to) for the least little reason. But this particular campaign seems to have more people on-edge than usual.
In 2 weeks, this will all be over anyway, one way or the other. "Opinion" pages are just that, a place to air opinions, whether it be from the staff or from readers. If someone dislikes your endorsement (myself included), then just write an "opinion" yourself (which, I might add, The Telegraph is diligent when it comes to printing the 'other side').
Don't lose any sleep over it.

in The Verdict On Candidate Op-eds on The Editor's BlogDear Mr. Pappas -
I would suggest printing them, and just add more pages to the newspaper, not deleting anything.
Thank you

in Nashuatelegraph.com: Reversing death penalty not option for mistakes on Nashua TelegraphNo reliable, unbiased report has ever shown that capital punishment is a deterrent. You quote that 6 death-row inmates have been released because of DNA? Well, you are obviously not very well versed on this subject - 17 in Texas alone! - with a total of 74... so far! Read your sheltered little pamphlets all you want, but if you want the truth, open up any major newspaper...
One person wrongly killed by the "state" is one (or a million) too many - no excuse. Aren't we supposed to be among the 'civilized' nations? We're one of very few who still practice this barbaric act. Would you suggest flogging and pillory be brought back?

in What’s In A Name? You Have No Idea … on The Editor's BlogWhat about printing the writer's age next to their name? (i.e. John Smith, 42)

in What’s In A Name? You Have No Idea … on The Editor's BlogDear Mr. Pappas -
I was thinking the middle-initial thing myself at first, but you're right - how many people actually know one's middle name?
Most folks do have e-mail these days, and publishing e-mail addresses might be a good idea - it differentiates people, and it's (relatively) non-invasive, privacy-wise.

in NashuaTelegraph.com: Web Notes on The Editor's BlogThough I'm a Bush supporter, I must say that Ms. Hall, Mr. Mullinax, et al, have a right to be heard. The whole point of an online (or printed) discourse is to express views, and, of course, some will feel contrary to what's expressed.
I haven't read a single word that offends me on this subject, even though I disagree with some. However, unless an editorial (or a RAN comment) is blatantly offensive, I don't believe that it should be edited.

in NashuaTelegraph.com: Blogs on The Editor's BlogDon't be discouraged about writing your letter. If something's on your mind, write about it! What's the worst that can happen? It doesn't get published. So what?! You got a weight off of your chest just by writing it, and sending it in... (concerns are never "silly")

in NashuaTelegraph.com: Blogs on The Editor's BlogDear Mr. Pappas -
Having written several editorials (many of which were published), may I add to the list of what is most-likely-to-get-printed, from my experience:
* Write about timely issues, especially if one's opinion may affect the outcome of a pressing situation (kind of redundant, but a little bit of a different take)
* Use correct grammar (and spell-check!)
* Be passionate with your words regarding the subject that you're writing to the editor about
* Be controversial (but not over-the-top)
* BE COURTEOUS to the Editor in your farewell
Thank you for your time and consideration Mr. Pappas, and thank you for setting up this forum.
Sincerely, -Dave Burgess

in Nashua Telegraph Blogs on The Editor's BlogDear Mr. Pappas -
When I first saw your 2/1/08 front-page article, well, um, I was appalled. Then, I read the article...
I'll be 42 next Saturday, so I don't remember ANY NY team being our favorite, but now, I understand where you're coming from - in more than 1 way...
After 9/11, I was a Red Cross volunteer in Manhattan, but I didn't stay in NY at night. I drove 2 hours each way to Rocky Neck State Park, just outside of Niantic, CT...
On Sept. 23rd, I went to a bar close to the state park to watch the second half of the NE/Jets game. I assumed that, since CT is part of NE, everybody would be Pats fans. Guess what? It was only me...
I understand your predicament! :)
PS - Still, GO PATS!!!

in NashuaTelegraph.com: Blogs on The Editor's BlogWhen you mention "the King", you obviously mean Elvis. "King of Soul", the late, great Mr. Brown. "Prince of Pop"... I could go on and on. The point I want to make is that Karl Rove WAS Mr. Bush's brain-trust, and whether you like our President or not, he was the brain-cell behind the power. He's a very intelligent, (and tries to be an) insightful man. Yes, BUSH'S BRAIN fits perfectly. It's a perfect moniker for him.

in Nashua Telegraph Blogs on The Editor's BlogMr. Bachman, thank you for your correcting "Crow". Eduardo's first article hadn't even been printed yet, and immigrant-bashing started.
To "Crow", where did you dream up American "super majority" supports your views?

in Nashua Telegraph Blogs on The Editor's BlogNick & Eduardo -
I very much enjoyed the first of - I hope - many Monday columns from you, Eduardo. Switching between you and Stacy Milbouer seems like a good idea to me for you to get started here, but after a month or two, maybe you could have Mondays, Stacy Tuesdays, something like that. She also is an excellent writer, and instead of competition, I'd like to see complimentary words-at-work.
It is a sad current state of affairs when an article such as 6/4/07's is necessary, but it is. We are almost all immigrants, maybe not first generation, but immigrants all the same. Hopefully, by the time my daughter has kids, people will have grown up...
Best of wishes for your new paper, Eduardo, and keep up the great work!
P.S. Thank you, Nick, for making this forum possible.

in Dude, What Were You Thinking? on The Editor's BlogAs one who reads 2-3 newspapers a day, it can become a little too easy to just breeze through the articles, perusing the first and second paragraphs, then moving on. However, an article such as this one was enough to make me stop my scanning approach, at least for a minute.
Mr. Wolfe was not trying to trivialize the situation, and quite honestly, I don't understand what the fuss is about. Of course if the incident had ended with injury or worse, the article would have been written more of a standard "News In the Region" - type of reporting. However (thankfully), that was not how this situation concluded.
I asked my 17-year-old daughter what she thought of the article when it was printed, and she thought that, had she been the culprit, she would have been mortified and humiliated to see her actions printed in this way, not encouraged to do it again, and certainly not an egg-on to her peers to try the same thing.
There is nothing wrong with trying to make reading the paper more entertaining, and as my daughter says, this article had more of a deterrent effect than encouragement.
I hope to see more of the same in the future.
