in To Friend or Not To Friend the Ex. on PurpleCar
I have friended a woman I dated before my wife because I didn't want her to feel slighted. I probably would have prefered not to, but it allowed me to avoid a lot of conflict.

PurpleCar LOL, Dave! Slighted? Wouldn't breaking up with her pretty much be the biggest slight? I mean, after that, then a simple Facebook Ignore would pale in comparison.

Interesting that you felt social pressure to friend her. What did your wife think? My husband is confused why I would even think twice about ignoring my ex. It's also interesting that just accepting the minimal connection helped you avoid conflict! What is the conflict? Would mutual friends pressure you, think you are a jerk for not friending? Would your ex gf start fatal attractioning you or something? Fascinating, all of it.

Thanks for that... I think you touched on an unspoken social pressure nerve there that we all have to bring out in the open.

in Think in Curves on Chris Brogan
I do my best to throw myself a curve everyday. I may take a different route to work or I may restrict the materials or resources I use in my artwork and see how it changes the end product.

Not only do I feel like it better prepares me for whatever, but I feel it keeps me a little sharper and a little more creative.

81st!!!

It can be hard for those of us who use their websites to generate conversations to feel like you are talking to yourself. Thanks for all of the inspiration and happy new year.

I agree with Chris Penn. All of these marketing people want everything to pay off now, and most things need to ruminate.

Amrita,
I've been approaching galleries for a little while now and whenever I get a rejection they always tell me that my art "doesn't fit" the gallery. I have also heard a lot of curators talk about really looking at the work in the gallery before submitting your portfolio.

If I'm trying to find galleries where my art will fit, what should I be looking for. I feel like my eyes are open, but I feel like I'm missing something.

How do you plan to use social media to make social change? And, how do you define social change? Changing the way you interact or changing the the community around you?

Do you know of any artists who are using what Chris calls social media to connect with galleries? I like the examples you gave, but do you have any examples of people who are trying a hybrid method, using new media and old fashioned schmoozing to promote their art careers??

It seems to me that anyone who has had success online has had moderate success with the traditional craft or traditional art market. Bloggers only seem to link or discuss widely known artists.

I'm trying to have it both ways, but I don't feel like I have any examples to look to or others to bounce ideas off of.

I only understand what your point is in theory, but you and I have two different problems. You are trying to make conversation better and I'm trying to keep it going.

This is a pretty cool idea and a great way to rally the troops to form their own community around themselves/you. Great Job.

I have been trying to capture my sketchbooks for the web and I was wondering if you have been coming across any interesting ways to display the pages on the web.

Right now I'm using flickr and I feel like the scanning and uploading process is just taking FOREVER. Any ideas or comments would be interesting/helpful.

You can check out how I'm displaying my sketchbooks:

in Twitter Revisited on Chris Brogan
Something about it makes it feel like a mix of a personal notebook/sketch-pad and the hallways at a conference. Twitter gives you the opportunity to play with ideas, try them out on other people, and get feed back without the formalness of a finished product.

I'm more likely to make a mistake on Twitter, and I'm more likely to just let it go on Twitter.

in The Power of Comments on Chris Brogan
Well comments are all well and good if you get a lot of them. What if you have a really passive audience or you're like me and have little to no audience?

The whole point of putting my artwork on the web was to open a direct line of communication with my audience, but so far I still have to beg for comments on twitter. Begging sucks.

We should be buying these also for the kids in the US who don't have access to computers. Most of my students do not have computers at home and this would be a great opportunity to teach kids and parents the value of these kinds of cognitive skills.

Why can't we buy two and give two?
