Kudos on getting a mention especially in such a limited list of local blogs. Though is a little disappointing they didn't put the effort into finding more excellent Australian blogs. I'd add Importance of Ideas (http://importanceofideas.com) to any media blog category. It has been the stand out new blog this year.

butterflyeffect Photography! Well, that's far too kind... and bloody hard to make a living from too... The good news on that front is that people do ask to use my photos for various things via Flickr (2 x books, travel guides, science conference exhibits, user driven news sites (a lot)), but only one paying job so far (one of the books). I'm not brilliant and I am laaaazy as hell when it comes to editing... but I entertain myself... I like taking photos.

Curator... now, I'd like that...

I also now feel like George Castanza that time he paid out on his boss and stormed out... then had a conversation with Jerry about what he might do... all ridiculous.. you know...

It makes the dashboard feel a little urgent / overwhelming for me. Sort of like email. What I like about tumblr is I can just slowly click my way through what i want. I can go through 5 pages 10 or 20 it doesn't matter as there isn't so quantifiable unread messages like the is in email or an rss reader. An option of preffered settings to turn this off would be cool considering other people seem to like it.

Will there be a way to set preferences for permalinks? I like that keword urls are there for people who want it even though I don't think Tumblr had a search engine indexability problem before (the person who sparked this yesterday, her tumblr powered blog had no incoming links which was the real cause for her lack of Google traffic) but for the people like me who use tumblr as a personal blog/scrapbook who aren't concerned or don't want their with post being on frontpage of Goog this is kind of annoying.

Jill I also hope there will be a way to choose which permalink style we prefer. I'm not sure I like this new system as some of my posts now have incredibly awkward URLs.

It's a nice sentiment but in Australia people freak out at photographers taking photos of anything. Buildings, people, the sky, whatever. I know newspaper photographers with massive cameras which should be give away as a legit person that get questioned and asked for a card/proof of ID all the time.

If only they kept Zeal up and running until user generated content became cool they could have cashed out with that as well. Looksmart is one of the great dispointments of the web. It's like they had the right ideas but could never get anything right.

It is a big win for Microsoft to sign up the marquee web 2.0 properties. I think they would be guaranteeing extra revenue to gazump Google, Yahoo and all of the other ad networks to do these deals.

Pfffft. She's been the most frequent, frank and open "celebrity blogger" for the past 18 months where she has given her different perspective but anyone who has watched the way the tabloids then turn everything she says into "celebrity wars" via the magazines can see why she'd take a break.
The tabloid stuff was always started by taking by her very open blogging manner. It's fair to get tired of blogging and take a break. She's only slowing the amount of posts. The better quote to have used from that link was her of own words.

Nice to see you back blogging BTW. Though lose the 120 second refresh rate. Lamest way to boost page views. Ever.

It's a pretty smart move.

Whenever I ask people how they think sites are ranked in search engine results pages their response is always "based on how many hits they get".

Combining the two fulfills the user's expectations but puts the smarts of the tech into work and on show as well.

I'd love to see a comparison of a few different factors overlayed on the same graph. Active users, revenue, employees, buy-out offers from the big boys, etc etc.

I actually like the he one-page montage of information as you call it but the waiting screen when you enter a search stating Gathering data, may take up to 30 seconds. is annoying and regular web surfers and most tech types won't tolerate waiting not matter how many sources are being aggregated.

Who would have thought a Daily Show clip was full of irony?

Also, your last sentence should read notice the comedians making fun of their employer and this entire situation.

I miss Chartreuse as well.

I have always liked the personal blog of a web start-up guy from down here in Australia. It's not Prince Campbell but it is fun and written by someone deep in the trenches of web 2.0 who does make me think.

Tough patch???

Ha ha ha ha. It's not a tough patch, it's using the time, money and resources of your former employer as your seed capital then up and leave to make good by yourself.

How can this be the same guy who talks about Second Life being hyped ceaselessly be the same person giving these fools a pat on the back?

I was waiting for the magazine publishers to get really interested in interactive properties. They have the most similarities with web 2.0 sites of any "old media" in having loyal audiences who have similar customer evangelism tendencies. Good move by Conde Nast me thinks.

in Fraser on Influence - Oprah, Lobbyists, John Cleese and the Power of Laughter on Disruptive Thoughts
Fraser, you know I really love your influence posts. You're right about laughter being linked to influence. Look at Stephen Colbert's rise from a correspondent on The Daily Show to this thing that transcends a TV show host. He's getting bridges named after him in Turkey. Oh by the way I'm back.

Howard, Cleese is ageing wonderfully. With dignity. Not trying to deceive the world by being dipped in plastic and acting like a kid yet still able to hold his own in Comedy against anyone. He was recently down here in Australia doing workshops on creativity and didn't hold back in his commentary of media yet was enthusiatic and enlightening in what he passed on.
