You are right that these discussions typically do not include tax and inflation. And the post did a good job of raising the issue. However, I think the statement "after inflation they have practically no returns" is also an overstatement. Based on the inflation calculator: http://inflationdata.com/inflation/Inflation_Ra...

The inflation rate between 1926 and 1999 is about 818% (i.e., a $1 in 1926 worth $9.18 in 1999). On the other hand, a 10% annualized return $1 invested in 1926 would be worth $1,150 in 1999. They are hardly comparable.

Also, many people now invest in Roth IRA and 401k, essentially allow them to avoid tax on gain which helps even further.

Re: linklings: hunk of burning blogging edition

Hey, thanks for the link (I got no trackback so you might want to ping me again).

I guess you were in the other extreme spending a lot of time with your fraternity. But, if I am the authority who's bailing out these banks, I wouldn't hessitate forcing them to re-write some of the bad mortgages/loans so that there will be less default (i.e, converting adjustable and interest only mortgages to something reasonable, may be a fix at 1% higher than normal fix rate [yes, the banks will have less profit and the borrowers will have to pay for it too]). I don't see anything wrong with forcing the banks to take less profit for the good of the economy at this point.

Re: sad news

That's very sad indeed.

Re: under new management

You scared me.
