Someone needs to get a wireless card for their laptop ;-)

James I assume you mean a Verizon or Sprint network card, since my MacBook Pro has built in wireless. The network is a lot better now... it actually works like you would expect it to in a hotel. Uploading the first set of today's pics went a LOT faster. Maybe because most people are gone right now...

in Where are our mid-level developers? on Vivisecting Media Conversations
Something to consider is the increasing amount of entitlement that people seem to have entering the job market. They feel that they deserve these more advanced, senior roles -- even without the demonstrated implementation. There are a few out there that are truly amazing developers, and that should be moved up the chain quickly; however, too often, people are moved up for the wrong reasons.

in Aggressive “Direct” Recruiting on Vivisecting Media Conversations
Here here, and that's just on the phone. The e-mail barrage of job requests from everywhere in the *world* in crazy. I have posted my resume nowhere, and clearly state on LinkedIn that I am very happy with my job and am not looking for anything new.

Recruiting for Web 2.0 firms is a lot like fishing with dynamite. You don't wait for the interested parties to come to your posting, you barrage them through brute force until you find someone.

I once had someone contact me for a job posting (this was years ago, when I *was* looking) at a web startup in the Bay Area. I had a phone screen, and then decided not to pursue it further, lacking confidence in the company and their business model. This same recruiting company "cold-called" me for the same job, with me proceeding into the phone screen, not realizing that they spoke with me already. When I realized what happened I informed the hiring managerwho was furious because the recruiter not only wasted my time, but her's as well.

Recruiting has become so cold -- unless you are within upper or executive management. I could limit my resume to just a list of my skills with nothing else. Job experience and personal information about me are meaningless...

...and that is sad.

James I think you hit it right on the head with the dynamite example. That is exactly what they are trying to do. Slam anyone that is out there that may come close to what they need and see what floats to the top. I just posted a new article that sort of ties into this issue. I think the new strategies have a lot to do with current state of the tech workforce.
