Unfortunately, I don't think it will ever go away. It will be used in one way or another -- whether seemingly for or against us.

Re: Investigate This!

I saw a story about this on ABC on Sunday morning. This is such a gray area. So here's my two cents, for what it's worth:

I think that people who want to be pastors should live a humble life. That does not mean that they should live in poverty or never have or own nice things. BUT, think about it this way. If you've dedicated your entire life to helping people, why spend $70,000 on a car when you can drive a very nice car for $30,000? That $40,000 could feed the hungry, clothe the naked, etc. So, when I see stories like this on the news, I just have to wonder what the real answer is. My gut tells me that Jesus lived humbly, and made Himself of no reputation, and men and women who take the job of pastoring should have the same attitude.

OK, I'll step off of my soap box. Great post! I'm glad you wrote about this.

Re: ‘This Christmas’ I am mad!

I saw This Christmas on Thursday night. It wasn't great and it wasn't horrible. I did have "Soul Food" flashbacks during a couple of the scenes. I think Hollywood is in a longstanding trend right now which is the anti-gangster movies that started appearing after Boyz in the Hood and Menace 2 Society came out. I'm always happy to see successful, educated, family-oriented Black films, but I think there is a lack of creativity on a lot these movies. It's like a pattern develops.

It does bother me what these reviewers said. But I'm with ETS, and don't really pay much attention to reviews. I made my judgement by going to see the movie for myself and would give the cast an A+ and the plot a C-.

Re: Coming to America

Amen to the American church being all about money. This is such an ironic story.

Re: bitch fest

It seems to me that the word is okay when a woman calls another woman a bitch. But when a man uses the word, he has to be referring to another man who he thinks is a punk. A man doesn't get away with calling a woman a bitch though. I equate bitch with the N-word. It's okay between black folks, but no one else has permission to use it. So a man can't use it against a woman, but a woman can use it against another woman. Or women also use it in a jokey way, which is also found a lot on TV and in movies. I personally don't call my friend's bitches...it's just not classy.

Re: Top 10 Blogs For Writers 2007/2008 - Seeking Your Nomination

I nominate the Renegade Writer blog! I also love magazines and have since I was a kid. I am hopeful that beautiful, glossy magazines don't go away with all of the digital content. I had to laugh at your memories about music -- I was also a tape dubber!

Thanks for the interesting observations and trip down memory lane.
