The people who own Jossip do not also own Bossip or Lossip.

BlackAdAgencyGuy Bossip and Lossip are the same company -- Jossip is not connected

Yeah the owners of Bossip are indeed Black. Get your facts straight.

Thanks BW20 for this info, i agree it is useful info to know if you work on the web, esp on the Black web.

I agree with Nokware, it probably was a deliberate decision to not have any feeds, however, it's a very misinformed strategy. It's clear Honey mag is on the hunt to get registered users ASAP. Forcing people to log in to do any activity on the site is a sign of that. Hopefully they will go hard on whatever launch plan they have because that's going to be their biggest push for users if they plan to keep their content locked up on their domain as it is right now. Otherwise they better hope people stumble across their site, and feel highly compelled to register. A slow slippery slope that is.

Visually the site is very pretty, though flash heavy with lotsa extra white space.

in When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong on Black Web 2.0
I think the original poster of this incident on the first blog post was kind enough to not really mention James' full name, which says to me it was about making a point with social media and PR and not about flameballing. Gawker blew it out of proportion, as did the person who wrote the letter to fedex execs. Gawker may have done it for the pageviews whereas the fedex person seems salty. I think things like this blow over pretty swiftly so from my standpoint its best not to pay attention to the tabloids.

my 8 cents.

in TheRoot.com’s New Redesign on Black Web 2.0
Okay it went from an F design grade to a C design grade. I was expecting a little more, you know with having an actual budget and all....

But then again, i am a design snob, don't listen to me!

in How not to launch on Black Web 2.0
I was on this site literally last week and it had Lorem Ipsum type text all over it. Though there was no actual content I was fairly impressed with their use and execution of Wordpress. Totally on the right track there, and ten million times ahead of say, TheRoot.com.

Some of the ads look to be skipping down the wrong column though, so I assumed they weren't exactly ready yet. I am sure their still working on some things. I'll keep an eye on it.

in Global Grind Facelift - Round 3 on Black Web 2.0
My speculation on the out of control traffic hike is due to the episode of Run's House where Russell pitches the site to investors was in reruns last month. That same episode first aired in January, hence that traffic spike then as well. Not to take away from their hard work, I'm sure, but looking at Alexa's reporting of week by week traffic for the month, it spikes for a few weeks in July then drops down again.

in GlobalGrind to Launch Hip-Hop Network with Glam on Black Web 2.0
Hmm, I can see why it worked for Lifetime, both Glam and Lifetime are female media properties. But Glam and hip hop? Not so sure that's so much of a slam dunk, but you're right, if they partner with some other properties of a different vein, collectively it can come together for them.

Well, at least it wasn't another Ning network! Or is it? (lol, the "community" section is under construction. I'm taking bets...)

in What I Learned From Kanye West on SheGeeks
Awesome post. I've been following Kanye's blog game for a minute now. Those design posts are mostly copy and pasted from a handful of blogs, I noticed. I was a bit annoyed by that, especially since there's no linkback to the blog or the vendor of the product. Sometimes he paraphrases, other times it's straight Copy/Paste. But you're right, it's like tumbling. I do appreciate the posts that seem like he wrote them (the ones about his tour, his new shoes, his playing Connect Four with Beyonce).

in Fixing the Twitter Skew on FriendFeed on introspective snapshots
I hate the twitter feature altogether on FF. I follow you already on twitter, don't need to be able to see it again inside FF. I can't log onto Twitter *and* FF. One of them has to go. Commenting back is overrated, that's what the @reply feature was created. Favorites can be pulled by RSS feed if necessary.

I think your suggestions above are great though. I am a FriendFeed grouch right now, so I am pretty much on the edge of bailing soon anyway.

in Aggregation And Lifestreaming: What’s The Difference? on SheGeeks
Hmm. I think lifestreaming includes those people who stream their life live on the internet via videa. So, like the JTV and UStream people, like iJustine used to do. Some people call is livestreaming though. I don't have a name for this aggregating thing yet, but I def don't think it's lifestreaming. i don't even have any of my real life friends on these services.

I am tired of aggregation sites, really. RSS is beginning to be my worst enemy these days.

in FriendFeed is THE Next Big Thing on SheGeeks
Looks like I should add some feeds to my FriendFeed account. lol. I tried out iStalkr months ago, and didn't like it, but maybe this time around I will dig a service like it.

in Finding New Friends On Twitter on SheGeeks
Hi! I just found your blog via twitter and added you. I think your blog/site is awesome! I am so glad to have found another young person of color in this space :)

Every now and then when I am feeling like my twitter needs more action, I go looking at the friends of my friends on twitter. Sometimes I also use Terraminds to search for keywords. I also track specific words and if someone says something interesting about the keyword, then I will check them out and add if I like. That's actually how I found your twitter account. Anyway, I posted a long dissertation of how I use twitter on my own blog, so let me not repeat the same thing here lol.

in Poor Form Time Warner Cable on EricaJoy
I hate that TWC is the monopoly provider in my area. I don't understand how that is legal. The problem you state sounds a lot like net neutrality, but are we not protected? Maybe I am getting them mixed up, I often get confused when it comes to net neutrality.

Either way, this is unfair and wrong!

in GlobalGrind Simplifies Design on Black Web 2.0
I was going to write about this on my blog sometimes this week. The redesign totally looked like a different function and business model, although the theme remains that they're pretty much copying another site (netvibes/pageflakes vs. digg now).

in Why Tech Media Cannot Go Mainstream on How To Split An Atom
I was thinking about the whole relevancy thing earlier today, but in terms of social networks. Tech people, geeks, etc like to talk about how they feel so much better freeing themselves from myspace or facebook by deleting their accounts....yet I find that I can't do that because I know a lot of non-techies who use the sites as their primary mode of communication. Sure, I have about 8 other ways to contact any of my geek friends elsewhere on the web, but that's not going to help me for my slow-tech cousins, heads from high school days, etc. In this sense I feel like techies just forget the rest of the internet world. There's a reason perezhilton.com beats out techcrunch.com in page views and traffic (and maybe even active participation).

sbspalding's picture
sbspalding Well said Liz.

It's not even traffic that matters, it's accessibility. We don't present news that is easily accessible to "normal" non-geeks. I am not the biggest fan of msm, but what they are very good at is making their content easy for large numbers of people to read and understand.

I also agree with the source of the problem. I think we all tend to forget that our Internet use does not represent "common" Internet use. I have trained several relatively tech savvy individuals who knew nothing about "Web 2.0" outside of Facebook / MySpace and -maybe- Digg.

Congratulations on your appearance, and thanks for posting the video, as I missed it live on TV. I missed most of the Iowa caucus happenings because of work commitments, but I was so very proud, happy and excited when I found out he won.

in Have the Data Wars Begun on Chris Brogan
For some reason I'm bothered by Scoble running scripts on his friends, and am glad Facebook stopped him. The method on how they stopped him, maybe wasn't the best approach, though, and is classic Facebook Customer Service with a Smile. I do applaud his efforts to try and crack the data portability issue, if that is indeed his intent, but I can't fault Facebook too much. You break the rules, they pretty much do what they want. Are we really that surprised? Is it because this is Scoble he should be treated any different?
