I just wish they'd let this simmer and cook until they come up with something fabulous that would actually work.

in Drop Trou on The Fold
I think the dialogue could be so much better if we got rid of ideologues on either end...and if total nut cases were not allowed to have cable news shows like Becks, a show that many seem to think is authoritative punditry.

thefold-Chris Beck is a very serious journalist. Anyone that does not heed his words does so at their own peril.

Marvalus No, you didn't miss anything...it wasn't even worth it.

The biographies? I've watched probably twice as many as you, and quite frankly, I'm at my limit. It took a while, but I'm ready to let him rest and go on now...

in Terrible Move by DCCC on The Fold
Yes, not going there would be better. Why people can't just state their case and spend their time bugging the fuck out of media to cover these things with integrity. We cn get as sick of them as we did the Republicans and we can do it even faster.
thefold-Chris's picture
thefold-Chris I'll do it faster because I expect better. I always say for 8 solid years the Repubs did this or that, but for 8 solid years the Dems also complained about it nonstop. Stooping to their level now is not an option. I do think this is a terrible message for Congressional Dems to be sending out.

in Old School Friday: Michael Jackson on Conversations With Marva
I had to think about this before posting. I guess all we can do now is listen to the music. Thank god for that at least. I have to admit I never knew the history of Jackson and his mtv debut and how they originally didn't want to play his thriller video, until today while listening to the stories.
I hope his kids can get through this without the world intruding upon them for the rest of their lives.

It does look like it is getting more violent. I wish them well and at this point I have read a lot of the older people saying it reminds them of the 79 revolution so this is a big wait and see. Let's hope we wait and see.

in Yet Another Right Wing Gunman on The Fold
I really think the public would be better off not watching any media coverage as there is very little that is not punditry. The conservatives have to get rid of the dangerous irrational folks if they are ever going to be restored to what some like to think was their former glory. It is a sad sad scene here now. We look quite crazy from afar, and for some time, maybe this will help people see how crazy we really are.

I love the look. The header is awesome.

Yikes she is good. That is coincidentally a Bill Withers song from one of the CD's I have of his. She does him proud.

I remember finding field negro on "blog explosion" years ago, he was at a different site then, he has gotten quite a readership since that time and is quite famous by now, deservedly so.

in No Party for Intellectual Conservatism on The Fold
I think it is evident, by the defaulting of some from the party, that conservative intellectual thought, in the way of the late William Buckley for instance, is outnumbered in the party by the non reasoning roots which have taken hold of the party since the bushie era.

Intellectualism - as using intellect to reason - is not what we call what Limbaugh and Beck and so forth practice, thus there is no way intellectualism, as I know it ,can be assigned to them - at least logically and therefore can not be assigned to the party they represent.

Conservative intellectuals, Hichens,, Robert Kagan and Judge Posner and so on and so forth really have no party if their party is not based on reason, logic and intellectual discourse, so I can't disagree with him on this.

thefold-Chris Now hold up. You're telling me Limbaugh, Beck and Hannity are not intellectuals? :)

They have books and op-ed's, tv shows, radio shows and millions of followers. Intellectualism is the first thing that comes to mind when discussing Glenn Beck ;)

in Labels Are Stupid on The Fold
Being heavily entrenched in stats and analysis this last year for grad school I rarely pay attention to polls now. There is some indication that people my age, the much maligned and sometimes self centered "gen y ", don't take sides on issues as general as that, so polling sometimes has little meaning.. We prefer to have a situtaion set out in front of us and answer that particular situation, making things situational makes it much less likely we can answer polls of the nature of those usually run to ask if someone is pro life or pro abortion.
thefold-Chris's picture
thefold-Chris Even with Gen Y being somewhat hesitant on polls, this is the first national poll to ever show a majority support in favor of the more conservative stance on abortion rights. I'm not sure whether to call it a fluke to say it's the beginning of a shift. But I do think the labeling of the whole issue is wrong. 74% believe abortion should be legal. I don't really see that as favoring the conservative position at all. The right wing will see it differently I'm sure.

in Tell Me What You See on Conversations With Marva
In the context of high creative photography is par for the course until you look past it, and you only l have to look a smidgen past it to realize that.

I've seen the whole series of photographs at another site, and to me, in a series, they seem more dangerous , less provocative in general and more indicative of a racism the artist had to have been aware of.

Of the several different ways I can interpret these photographs not one of them is non offensive to me and it is because no one is unaware of the history and the discourse which circulates around that history. I haven't posted on these photos anywhere else because I needed some time to think about them, but there are too many times when art and artists do what they do with little care for what they are really saying.

thefold-Chris I had never heard of it either. It was intense just not as long lasting as a real hurricane. The real brutal part only lasted about 20 minutes. In a real hurricane it can go on for hours. I couldn't imagine another 20 minutes of what we went through.

I am a little disappointed that calling waterboarding torture seems to be enough for him though. I realize the complications he is facing right now but I'd prefer he prosecute those suckers.
thefold-Chris's picture
thefold-Chris I'd prefer it as well. But chances are the real people responsible, George Bush-Rumsfeld-Cheny, will never be prosecuted. Instead we would get a scapegoat and not even close to a high level Bushie. That's what happened in the Plame leak. We got Scooter Libby and Cheney walks free. I'd rather not go through that. Now if it were possible to get a high level Bushie and especially Rumsfeld then I'm all for that. Prosecuting the former president would never happen, however.
