Thank goodness you are okay and I hope that is the last you see of this freak.
In so many cultures it is just not the norm for women to travel alone or do anything alone. They go from their parent’s house to their husband’s house and social activities are usually in a group with the family. As someone who travels on her own most of the time it can become tedious being asked are you married, why aren’t you traveling with your husband etc. I’m sure you can relate. And some men unfortunately think that all foreign women who travel on their own must be “game.” This is unfortunate. (And obviously not an excuse for bad behavior and in the case of your pursuer psycho behavior. How dare he.).
I have never been in a situation as scary as yours but when being followed down the street by someone who won’t give up or when I simply want to sit on a bench in the shade without being harassed I ask them what they would do if a man approached their sister, mother, niece the way they are approaching me. While they contemplate that I give them the slip or they back off. Some even apologize.
Obviously your situation was more serious and a perfect example of trust your gut. Wishing you safe and carefree travels.

The average American also only gets two weeks of vacation unlike Europe where the average (for the most part) is at least a month. Makes it tough to see the world if you hold down a traditional job.
I watch the BBC to get a snippet of world news and read the U.K. papers online.
Network news is a joke and CNN isn't what it used to be.

What is really pathetic about the increase in miles required etc is that AA still has one of the better FF mile programs around--in the U.S. But only if you have elite status, which makes a world of difference for many reasons (no luggage fee, better access to awards to name a few). It's also part of the Oneworld Alliance, which like Matt mentions includes JAL. It also includes Cathay Pacific one of my favorite airlines. When flying to Asia I'll typically fly Cathay which is head and shoulders above any U.S. airline but still earns miles for AA. I have enough miles stockpiled for my husband and I to fly business next year to India, which after flying economy for many years from New York will be a delight.
Nice contest and a great way to boost subscribers. I'm in.

in The Little Things You Notice Before You Leave on Almost Fearless
The day I was packing up my things to put in storage in NYC in preparation for a move to London Woody Allen was filming on my block. It was Halloween and a very tall man in a batman costume (tights and all) walked through a scene being shot completely oblivious and they had to stop filming. Everyone broke out laughing. I remember thinking where else on earth will something like this happen on my doorstep? But if I hadn't been packing my bags to leave I would have taken it all for granted--just another day in paradise :^)
