Google has pretty clear results http://www.cuil.com/search?q=google&sl=long

At least I can find Google.

I searched the name of a somewhat obscure podcast with and without quotes. There are 200+ results for this found on Google, so it's well indexed and there are Facebook, twitter and other references to the name.

ZERO (0) results appear on cuil.

It looks pretty slick and maybe they're still ramping up, but when I search the web, I want to find the newest content for item or topic I'm searching. I'd have to agree that this story appearing as the top news result is relevant since the search is obviously inferior.

(one guess as to who's podcast I was searching;)

I'm might just go get one for my Mother. She has never had an email address, never seen any of my sites or pics online. And it's her Birthday Sunday!

Recently, a number of my "real friends" (folks I know from places other than the web) joined Facebook, en masse. The quote, "you can take the people out of Myspace, but you can't take the Myspace out of the people" suddenly became crystal clear.

Some people see all of this (getting online for any reason) as "play" and that may never change for some. It has been interesting to watch some of them become really active on FB while others just goof around in that Myspace way that still almost makes me physically ill.

I've always been a "legit" user. Meaning, no fake or multiple accounts / names. Early on (1996) I met people online that became business partners and friends. Because of this, I take it seriously.

There's nothing wrong with either end of that spectrum. Opinion articles? I rarely take those very seriously--unless I'm doing the writing! :-)

I used to have a Fiero. I don't have an iPhone. I'm so far from the cutting edge.

If mashable had no "e" at the end, I would never read it. Yeah...

It's a feature--just look how many other sites are already doing the same or similar things. I can't wait to see the first government sites that allow residents to really participate in government using these features. I was actually just thinking about that on the drive home yesterday.

Didn't Google also just finish dancing? Does that make a difference on the Google side of this irksome search results issue? I just wish shaunblog.com would not come up on Google at #2 in a search for Shawn Honnick!

Bad idea to bring in FTC on this kind of thing. Movies that are paid for product placement in scenes are not required to disclose this information in the credits. While I do feel strongly that PayPerPost is especially tacky and insulting to all who write and read blogs, government regulation can also get a little stinky and rude at times.
