in Lakeside, a 1908 Democratic Convention attraction, turns 100 on The Colorado Independent
Lakeside is great! We went there a couple years ago for the first time in decades and enjoyed it immensely. Here's a photo essay page, for anyone who wants to take a virtual visit!

I hope they get some of the nice ones. When I was at the State Convention in May, I was impressed by how the ones I ran into seemed to be going out of their way to be friendly and chatty. So maybe we'll get lucky!

in President-as-insomniac book club picks on The Colorado Independent
Heh! I actually took that poll. When I get caught up a little (quit laffin!) I'm going to follow up with a full review post, but the one I recommended was Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. It's the story of a smart but average teen in near-future San Francisco who runs afoul of Homeland Security for being (innocently) in the wrong place at the wrong time after a terrorist attack. Furious at the loss of his best friend and what used to be his freedom-loving country, he uses pretty much current and available technology to get other disaffected youth mobilized to fight back.

If our current government read and understood this book, they'd ban it in a heartbeat!

Upon finishing it, I immediately bought a copy for my geeky grandson. But even better, the author has made it free to download off the net under Creative Commons. Just Google around for a link.

in Colorado Political Corruption Report Names Rogues’ Gallery on The Colorado Independent
Short version :) I do see where you and Luis are coming from. I have already been discussing this in private email with him, so I will just put out my summation here and call it good.

I agree strongly that politicians and groups should be clear and honest in their required reports, and file them on time.

I have no insider knowledge as to what the problem is with getting Wes's reports in on time. There IS probably a reason. It might well be a DUMB reason. But in my book, "dumb" does not equal "corrupt", at least not all by itself.

Maybe this public humiliation will make them get their act together down there in Walsh. Only time will tell.  I am much MORE sure it will provide negative and untrue ammunition to whoever may run against Wes this fall, and hurt our local party's efforts to increase support for Dems in the bargain. Would that be a fair trade-off? I doubt it, and I also doubt anyone thought of that. But the law of unintended consequences never sleeps.

The reason I protest Wes's inclusion is because of the title and list aspect. "Tem MOST Corrupt" ought to mean exactly that, and there should be some info given as to how the 10 worst were chosen for that spot, compared to the others who were mentioned as also coming under scrutiny. As it stands, it looks like people got picked according to some set of criteria those of us who are mere readers of the final result aren't privy to.

In other words, a non-transparent system of judgment is pointing fingers at Wes for not being transparent in a timely fashion.

To me, that's a problem.

I have to disagree on Wes McKinley, Luis Putting out a "Ten Most Corrupt" list implies there was some sort of weighting of the severity of all the assorted charges. Unless you 'show your work' and demonstrate why two instances of missing a filing deadline are somehow WORSE than (for instance) the stuff Bob Schaffer has pulled (since he only got a dishonorable mention), you leave yourselves open to the accusations of attention grabbing and playing favorites.

In other words, if you guys feel like you HAVE to post lists like this, do it with some consistency and transparency.

And yes, I am reacting emotionally to this. It's damned difficult to get a good Dem elected down here in Southeast Colorado.  It's not helpful to make dramatic charges of corruption that you KNOW his opponent will try to use, especially when the true facts are kind of boring and won't stick in the public mind.

100% with you, Wildflower Besides being a heck of a nice guy, Wes could rest on his laurels for the rest of his life JUST for the good work he has done to right the wrongs of Rocky Flats, never mind things like Pinon Canyon and his anti eminent domain bill. Yes, someone should have filed those reports, and the ultimate responsibility is with him, even if it was support staff that let him down. But honestly, two mess-ups like this (they didn't find anything WRONG, the reports were just LATE) aren't even in the same COUNTY as the ball-park of alleged corruption those other guys are playing in!

QED There are two choices for IDing Deniers.  One set are Big Daddy God Fans. I think they are the better people because, deluded though they are, they at least have understandable psychological reasons for their avoidance of reality.

The other set are the greedy, selfish cynics who cling to any Authority's "facts" that back them up because they dread the thought of losing anything they think of as THEIRS: goods, money, social status, power and the illusion of being RIGHT.

If you are not one, you must be the other.

Oh, and by the way, when you yourself use sarcasm and name-calling from your first post on, you don't get to say later that your opponent's use of same means you win.  Just FYI.

in She’s Not Gonna Blow! on The Colorado Independent
I did a little looking around online Looks like they have started pumping Wednesday with a pump they had on hand. It's slow, and from the top end of a shaft that (they say) the water is okay in, but it should start taking pressure off overall.

There is a new heavy-duty pump being hustled into play which will move the contaminated water from an older (?) shaft to the treatment plant, hopefully within two weeks.

See, that's what's crazy. The treatment plant was already there! It was just that there are two government agencies saying, "You do it!"  "No, YOU do it!" "It's YOUR job, not mine!" "Darers go first!" etc etc etc.

As to the TOXIC factor, I think there must be a strong probability that even if there is never a blowout, the poisons could indeed seep down and out until they got into the river and then into the water table.

Flowing downhill is what water does best.

What kills me about you Rabid Deniers.... ...is that behind your "La-la-la, I can't HEEEARR YOOOOU!" posture is the pure-minded, rock-solid certainty...

which comes from your belief in your Invisible Friend in the Sky, Who's going to use magic one of these days to make the Earth perfect again for His Best Pals.

Thank Heaven the God I believe in is much more sensible and gave us humans brains so we have a fair chance of working it out ourselves before it's too late.

What I wonder... ...is why, since this has been a steadily worsening problem since 1995, it takes scare tactic media stunts to get something DONE about the situation to STOP it from turning into an ecological disaster.

Whether all that water "explodes" out or just overflows out, it's going to be bad for everyone and everything downstream.

I bet if that Weins guy was a Dem, we'd be pinning a medal on him and treating him to a ticker tape parade, for being such a super-duper friend of the environment.

A word of advice Like the song says, "If you're gonna play the game, boy, you got to learn to play it right."

On a troll-rating scale of 1 to 10, I guess I'd give you 2 bridges for effort.  But you're pretty much coming across as a noob here, using all the nooby tricks, such as, "Ooh, you're breaking the RULES and I'm gonna TELL", "I only called little names but he called me back WORSER ones" and "You guys are all being mean and sticking together, but OTHER people agree with me!! Even if I have to invent them."

I think if you apply yourself you can do better.

Thanks for the tip of the cowboy hat or gimme cap, as you prefer! The new museum is even more of a showplace than it used to be, and if you are ever in this neck of the prairie, it's well worth a visit!

Here's a short entry about our local Dem participation in the Lamar Days parade, from my personal blog.
