Great article bro. And the one on 850 Words of Relevant for today.

I see so many needs popping up even just among my friends. A married couple I'm friends with mentioned that they eat like vegetarians. I thought this was just a choice of theirs. Turns out meat is too expensive for them. I think Jesus would get them a pound of beef now and again. Maybe Jesus IS getting them a pound of beef when I decide to go to the store and buy them some.

Maybe God's love can be shown in the form of a pound of beef as much as the other ways we know so well.

Let's all look for the places our friends need some lovin' this holiday season.

The last church I was at in Las Vegas had an auditorium. The church I'm at now has a Sanctuary. Previous to Vegas the church I was at had a Sanctuary.

It was fun going from one to the other and being constantly corrected. Especially talking to people at those other churches and calling it the wrong name.

Hey Tony,

I worked at Canyon Ridge as an AV Mananger and Web Developer for about 7 months earlier this year. You see it from the outside, but actually being there and working there was such a huge blessing and made a huge impact on my life. Canyon Ridge is one of those churches with "excellence" as it's middle name. It was a great experience.

There was an energy at SSCC today, an excitement, that was somewhat bigger than usual. The music was outstanding as well. It really felt like someone spent 40+ hours this week getting it ready. If that was the typically "shaky" first Sunday, then I can't imaging how well the future events will go. Thanks.

Hey Fred. The services today were honestly the best I'd been to in Glynn County in quite a few years, if not the best ever. Music-wise, wow. Talk about an all-star cast. There wasn't a sign of mediocrity anywhere. It was very good.

I agree with you totally about the message. It wasn't elaborate or "clever". It was the love and forgiveness of God in simple and understandable terms - just as it was first show to us. It was very good.

And in response to your line on setup time. Seven hours up, forty-five minutes down. I wish it was as easy up as it was down. Crazy. :)

It'll be neat to see what the attenders saw once I throw the DVD in. I experienced the service mixing five video signals, so it'll be good to see the final product. Hopefully I'll be able to hand you a copy tomorrow.

A new idea (I say new, though the practice is years old but just catching on) I have been both a part of and seen the results from a distance is Saturday night church. No theology or doctrine used to decide this, only the idea that Sunday mornings are stinkin' hard to get up for, especially if one isn't used to it. Both a church I used to be a part of and a local church in Brunswick tried the Saturday night service idea. The church I was at in Las Vegas did that and then had to add a second Saturday service because of the explosion of attenders. The local church here added a third service to their offerings on Saturday instead of having three on Sunday. From what I hear, it is their best attended and most fruitful service.

I believe strides like this are going to help the Church to provide a place for both believers and seekers alike to find Christ in a way outside the mold. This is one more step to breaking down the non-theological tradition that may possibly be harming us. Just like breaking free of purely traditional songs in church, breaking free of traditional meeting times and places will present the church as not stuffy and boring, but loving and caring enough to create environments where people can be loved on and become fully devoted followers of Him.

To an early 20's family like me and my wife, it is the best idea since padded pews.

In our circle of "professional Christians", we rarely make it out to places where we have the opportunity to share the message of Christ. Not "there aren't those places". There are. But working in a church 50 hours a week cuts the seeming availability down. We have to consciously make the effort to "seek and save the lost" as Jesus Himself purposed to do (Luke 19:10).

The early Methodist leader John Wesley wrote in his Rules of the Methodist Church, "You have nothing to do but save souls. Therefore, spend and be spent in this work.â€ Wow.

At least he wasn't vague about it.

Now... to the two commenters above who I happen to spend a lot of time with... let's keep that purpose at the front of our minds. Fred and Shannon, we HAVE TO seek and save to lost. We have to.

It seems that in my life I buy truth by getting up early to read and pray. That problem is that I seem to loose it. It's not on my mind as often as it should be.

I misplace the truth.

On the other hand, I'll give truth away to any who want it. Being able to freely give what has been given to me is a blessing and I hope that I may be able to more and more.

But then again, do I sell it as in trading it for something else? Do I sell the truth for the price of a bit of pleasure?

No way. With no offer of "translation" or anything of that nature... even no reference to God and the actual meaning of tongues and their purpose... this looks like some guy who used to be in the church found a way to make about $40 a shirt. I wouldn't be surprised if the owner wasn't even a believer.

Windows Mobile (at least this version) is beyond the usual "every phone has its quirks". I think the phone itself is fine. Good reception. Good audio quality. But once you do anything beyond making a call it reminds me of its big brother Vista.

I'm gonna be an iPhone owner as soon as I can. AT&T's service will have to do. :)

Actually, we're not ditching Dave on this one. There just aren't any deals to be had. iPhones are $400 with no breaks. So, we'll be saving all of the $400 over the next few months. :(

Plus, Sunday was great. You guys did a great job. As for the sermon, I agree it was great. I think the congregation agreed... we had about four times as many signups as usual for sermon CDs.

My biggest opinion on the matter is an echo of your points... freedom. Visually on stage a performer... oops.. "worship artist" needs to actually look like they are worshiping. Reading sheet music looks like reading sheet music. Worshiping looks like worshiping. As I've heard you say before, Fred, the band needs to lead in all aspects - in melody, in energy, and in looks. I'm glad my music teachers always made me memorize my music, because then I was able to play my horn with feeling and not just play notes.

What? You mean I can't just be a good little boy and get to heaven? Just kidding.

I see verses like the one in Ephesians and 2 Corinthians where the author calls the Holy Spirit a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come to believers.

Ephesians 1:13-14 (NIV) "And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possessionâ€”to the praise of his glory."

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 (NIV) "Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."

2 Corinthians 5:5 (NIV) "Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."

I believe God's guarantees are good. I believe He will hold up His end of the deal. But I do agree that lost faith is probably non-faith. There are probably many situations where someone is saved but simply tends to ignore it.

Where is this line drawn? Where does God say "That's it. To Hell with you buddy!" Where does one quit "holding fast". Can we ever tell it or does God have some cosmic algorithm He uses to damn us? I see God as a God who is just. If He promises to forgive us of all unrighteousness and sin is that only for pst sins or all sins we will make. How long does His blood cover us? Must we ask forgiveness of each and every sin? If we die without asking forgiveness for speeding to work are we damned?

I'm not sure the first verse necessarily refers to salvation and I'm not sure in the second verse "overcomes" refers to getting saved or staying saved. They aren't explicit though the verses I quoted above are explicit. They clearly state that God guarantees the salvation He gives.

Is there any way to ignore that?

In reference to the "line" where we could possibly lose our salvation...

Is that biblical?

Or are we imposing our life experiences on our God? He is not a man.

Is this view of salvation or the loss there of a sign of disbelief?

Who came up with this idea and what biblical basis do they have? Do we believe this only because a pastor or parent told us. Does the Bible, regardless of tradition, speak for or against eternal security?

Shannon did a great job leading. He gave us our parts. He provided clear direction of where we were going. Overall he did a good job. Fritchman did a good job too on the sermon. Scary at some parts, but still a good sermon. :)

Show me a person that doesn't sing and I will show you a person who doesn't love a Jesus a whole lot.

Doesn't the new heart... the new life we are given as Christians... create in us a desire to know God more? I know this for a fact that the more I read my Bible and pray the more I HAVE to sing. People over and over in the Bible - after experiencing God - sang, danced, shouted, played instruments, and got naked.

I think it's a lack of experiencing God that causes this lack of stirring in our hearts. Given, some people are wired different but let's change the display of worship from singing to praying and see if we feel the same way.

I would expect to be called a liar or crazy if I stated that I could love God and not talk to Him. Or can you love God and not read your Bible?

So why is singing treated like the stepchild of worship? Worship is a word that encompasses all of these expressions and more.

I hate the fact that so many of us learned worship the wrong way. Some of us were taught worship was ONLY singing. Some of us were taught worship was works.

So how do we solve it? It's obviously a flaw in the system somewhere. Sign me up for whatever it takes to fix things.

Let me rephrase...

Singing is one of many natural outcries to God. Among them are singing, praying, shouting, dancing, and silence. I wonder if someone who does not respond to God's goodness is out of touch with God and doesn't fully love Him.

Is there a correlation between easy/old songs and harder/new songs and the amount of or passion during singing?

Is there a correlation between songs to God and about God and the amount of or passion during singing?

Could it be that the past few weeks at church most of the songs are about God? For instance...

In comparison, I "get into" songs more that are to God. They become a prayer. They remind me of the things I need to talk to God about and I sing them to Him. For some people instead of singing they are spoken in a prayer.

On the flip side, sitting a service that is 100% fact - including music, announcements and sermon - there is no scheduled time to engage with God. I think that might have been a huge oversight on our part if what I'm asking is true?

What do you think, Fred or others? Might we need to weight our songs toward those TO God instead of only ABOUT Him?

Even the Psalms. Many were to God. Many were about God. I really like songs that lead us from "about" to "to" like Tell the World. It's both.

Haha. But on the serious side, I'm not a worship leader but I somewhat get the spotlight regarding the graphics and such I make for worship times. Though I do enjoy comments (that's the rock star in me I guess), I would really just like to hear "That helped me engage with God because it showed me _____ and helped me focus on Him." It's the reason why I do it and have such a passion for seeing it done right.

For worship leaders and musicians, I wonder if the comments and praises to us are at the core directed to God or if many people are missing God for the sake of the music(ians). If you take the band to a different setting and they record a CD, not many of us ever think "That producer did a great job with the band helping them tighten up. Wow that guy in the mastering studio really knew what he was doing." Instead we all praise the frontman and forget about all the people that work behind the scenes.

It's funny that the most behind the scenes person in musical worship is God. He doesn't have a mic but He want's to have our hearts. He said it himself that the first will be last and the last will be first. His behind the scenes work gets Him the glory if we as musicians step aside and let the real star take the stage. He is the unseen source of the power to worship. If we really focus on Him and not the guy singing the experience is so much better.

At the Night of Worship last Sunday night I took off my glasses and thus rendered myself blind to the world and its distractions. I was able to lean back against the wall and sing with nothing to distract me visually. When I took my eyes off of you and the band, where they never should have been, and put them on God something changed. It was like the doors to my heart got opened and He came in. It was amazing.

I learned that night once again that worship is not about singing or music. Its about God getting our hearts.

May we never ever stand in the way of that.

So how do we help our congregations get past these distractions and get God?
