I would say cost is the major factor why Brits send more texts than make calls. With expensive tarrifs, hidden costs, raising inflation, expensive fuel, cost of living going up more times a year than peoples salaries to match, sending texts is one way to save money.

Great idea, however, seen a similar DIY device just over a year ago now on Youtube, which seeing the down side of this, you still only have one hand free, to which led me to develop, an N95 bodycam, which is still in its development, and trial stages at the moment.

Its similar to the Bodycams that are used in the big screen movies, where the actor, or actress has to wear this bodycam, which comprises of an harness, and several poles, and weights etc, however, my version is much simpler, and lightweight, and once set up, you can video yourself, and you not only have both hands free, you can freely move about, and the camera stays focused on its target, ie, your head, and shoulders.

Its patent pending at the moment Mark, so to be on the safe side, im keeping the design, and spec of it quiet for now, its still in its early stages of development, but a prototype should be finished in a couple of months or so.

Superb news Mark! I worked in Germany for a couple of years for Arcor Mannesmann, I was based in Frankfurt, well thats where our offices were based, but I worked in the field, so got to see most of Germany while I was there, we were building a new mobile phone network there.

Obviously, you have to go and see whats left of the Berlin Wall, theres still some left near the Hauptbahnof. The Victory Column (Siegessäule) is a must see too. If you get the chance, go to Berlin's Zoological Garden, you will love it.!

Great rant, and justified in several area's. I too would say Nokia have far too many similar based handsets in the market place, which not only confuses consumers, but also blurs individuality.

At least S60 5th Edition is somewhat backwards compatible.

@marco, Nokia are working on being able to transfer your purchased applications from one device to another.

Excellent stuff Mark, great photos.! I too agree about the N96's poor performance when it comes to the dual led flash, if only Nokia fitted a Xenon flash, it would of been almost perfect, and talking of Xenon, this is the reason, Im on the look out for a nice new N82 for myself.

I will be carrying out my first challenge soon now I have received the missing items from my costume :)

Been running Mobbler without any problems on an N95-1, N95-2, an N96-1, and an N81 8GB.

Mobbler rocks!

I did however, has some initial start up problems with connection, however, retried, a few times, and eventually it worked.

Impressive isn't it. Did my trial N96 the other day too.

Red Bends FOTA technology is certainly the way forward when it comes to updating your Nokia device's firmware. 120MB file voa NSU converted to around 12MB via FOTA. Impressive.

I usually carry a couple of devices around with me when Im out and about, and with these, a couple of Proporta USB Mobile Device chargers, with Nokia CA-100 Charge leads. All of these fit neatly in my Proporta gadget bag ;)

My main battery drainage comes from WiFi Connections, as I use Strands Social Player, which Tweets to my twitter, and several other accounts including las.fm etc.

Nokia is being walked all over from SE, Samsung, and now even LG have released a transparent phone, beating the Neon range Nokia was all too keen to mention ages ago.

Ok, we heard you the first time.

Nokia's argument, and reasoning behind NOT using Xenon, is in actual fact, new technologies being used in the N86 lens. Its the widest lens in any of Nokia's handsets, it's also been discussed in the Q&A today by Igor that these new technologies, increase the quality of low light conditions, thus the reason to no longer use the Xenon, asd the dual led has been proven in tests to perform just as well.

That being said, i would like to see proof of this myself, side by side shots in the same conditions for example. We have already see marks own photo case studies here with single, dual led's, and Xenon, but we really need to see some examples from this N86 before we can dismiss Xenon.

There will always be those who argue more MP = better camera's, but the fact of the matter is, Nokia is not in this race, and does not even entertain it, they are focused, pardon the pun, on producing better camera lens, software, and sensors, not playing the game others are playing.

Im still quite new to Blogging, but everyone has to start somewhere right? I use VOX, and Wordpress, both of which are related to all things Nokia, and of course, anything i feel would be of interest to anyone else who shares the same interests as myself, ie, gadgets, technology, telecommunications, and online software, again related to Mobiles, and connectivity.

My Wordpress Blog is at the moment, a source for anyone who is in the market to buy a new Nokia N95, where they can checkout photos of all N95 clones that are in the market place, in the hope it will help people from losing their hard earned buying a fake handset. With Cloned N95 handsets getting mixed in with genuine stock, its becoming a serious problem, and with sellers buying in bulk, the only way they can tell the difference between a clone, and fake N95 is to open the sealed box, and insert the battery into the phone, and switch it on. The latest N95 8GB clone, is identical physically, and even shows a Nokia firmware result when *#0000# is keyed in, which although is an old Firmware from an N95-1, it still fools many unsuspecting consumer.

Im dead against these counterfeiters. We have had an influx of new members joining the N95users forums who have either been sold a cloned N95 as genuine, or have been sent a clone which has been mixed in with genuine Nokia stock.

Just today we have had another two members who were having problems with their handsets, and after asking a series of questions, we found they had clones. All we can do, is offer to help these members try and file a successful claim to get their money back, depending on how they have paid, and where they purchased the clone from. Usually eBay however. Its not a nice thing to do to tell someone they have purchased a clone, particularly when your talking about upwards of $500.

We also have many pages that offer help to stop people falling prey to these counterfeiters, and I have even a few articles on my Blogs about them, including the BBC contacting me regarding a Watchdog type investigation.

The software used in the cloned N95's is terrible, and on the latter clones, its actually an older Nokia devices software, which has been hacked, so much so, it will show a result when *#0000# is entered into the keypad, only to fool the unsuspecting, and to try and convince the unknowing amongst us, but with some simple steps to take, and many photos for people to look through, we hope to keep as many people away from supporting the counterfeiters as possible.

I made my own tri-pod mount using an non OEM N95 hard plastic, and leather look case, embedded a quarter inch nut into the hard plastic on the one side by heating it up so it was red hot, then placing it into place on the case, so it melted its own shape into the moulding, then cooled off with water, then super glued it in place.

I can now mount my N95 on any traditional Tri-Pod. I have also made a mount which Ive called the N95 body mount, which lets you have both hands free while videoing yourself. Keep your eyes peeled on my blog for details which will be posted up in the next couple of weeks.

I too swear by it, as you say, using Map Loader, download the maps you need onto your phone, (if you have the new 16GB MicroSD, then theres loads of space for all maps I think), then as you say, no connection needed, its great!

Yet another great video, and an appropriate location! I was tuned in to Nokia's Virtual Live Event web page last night waiting, and waiting, then got given a link to electricpig.co.uk which was up to date, and had live updates of the 5800 launch, I later found out the Virtual Launch had moved. Also, Tangler crashed too, which was a bum, I really wanted to give some feedback.

Anyway, great vid Ricky, I will send you details of my N95 bodycam as soon as its finished, as you could do with one, saves having to pay a camera man ay :P

I would say that the lens protection used in the N86 differs from the N97 one slightly due to it not having to cover the dual leds like the N97 lens protection does. If you imagine an N86 green undercover on an N97, there may be problems where the dual leds recess below the level of the glass.

I have also travelled around the world with my past profession, which was also for Nokia, however, I was a field based engineer, planning new mobile phone networks, from surveys, to installation, and commissioning. Absolutely flaming superb James! Nokia House is a sex shop, I have never been myself yet, but plan a visit in 2009. Really enjoyed the video. The first part in Helsinki I watched the day you recorded it, and streamed it, I think, can't remember now if you used QIK, or whether I watched if shortly after you recorded it. Anyway. Watch the N79, as Rafe made some good points. Its an invisible device, and it shouldn't be under estimated.

I watched your video right to the end too, and was half expecting you to surprise us with something, but hey ho, guess we will have to wait a little more.

Enjoyed reading that, i now know Im safe in the knowledge that Im not going crazy with this N96 i too have from WOM, it too came with V10, and was buggy as hell, I was impressed by the speed of the OTA update however, so too with the quality of the dual slider, and a few other things, which I will mention in my blog.

I do agree with you James on many of your valid points regarding the hardware flaws in the N96, and cannot help thinking that the N96 was probably ready for launch back when the N95-2 was launched, and Nokia had no choice than to flog a dead horse because it was too late to go back.

Do you have any contact details for the designers of the N96? I remember watching a couple of videos of the people responsible for the design, and build of it, there was a woman involved in the design if Im not mistaken too, not that it matters of course that a woman is designing a phone, but I would like to get some questions answered regarding all the flaws the N96 is crippled with.

I don't hate the N96, don't get me wrong, and when you read my review (its ongoing/unpublished just yet), you will see that Im getting on with it quite well since upgrading its firmware, however, Im not a power user such as yourself, so battery life hasn't been an issue for me so far.
