To be fair I should read some of the other posts here to see if you ever write about providing value through quality content instead of link building b.s. but really - look at yourself, you're telling people it's a good idea to join a bunch of groups in Tribe for the link juice, to fluff up the number of tag pages you put your story about random crap into on Del.icio.us and I don't know how you plan on getting lots of followers on Twitter unless you are counting on an army of scumbags following you in hopes you'll follow them back and you'll all get a bunch of content-free link love. Seriously, why would I want to "rank high for Blockbuster Video"?? If I was making a crass grab for money, I suppose. People need to keep their crass grabs for money out of my social bookmarking services, though - 'cause I go there to find valuable content and connect with other people looking for the same - not to find the network swamped with stuff like this. I make my living finding, producing and guiding other people to high quality content - this post is a good example of "high quality content" all about how to flood useful sites with crap. Come on dude, I bet you're smart enough to get a real job.

Re: Disqus Joins The Battle For Your Blog’s Comments

Testing, testing! I understand that you work with more than just RSS feeds, but I presumed when I read your comment that you meant I could export the feeds of the friends I'm following. That way, the work I put into your service wouldn't be lost if I decided to go to another lifestreaming service. As it is, you're holding all my subscriptions to yourself - creating a barrier to me leaving. Why do that? Why not just win my loyalty through good faith and superior service?

Re: Interview with Marshall Kirkpatrick (Scripting News)

Hey Bret, sorry I left such a hostile comment, I'll have to look at the FOAF file too - I'm sure you know what people would like to take with them if they leave FF. Quality content in general is going to be a sweet spot for sure though. I wonder if video runs a higher risk of angering viewers if standards aren't met - the emotional investment required makes it feel worse if it's bad than skimming boring text content!

Re: Looking a Google gift horse in the mouth

Thanks Mathew! He said the restrictions were due to a leftist dominated congress and that he'd work to remove them. It's hard to know which approach incurs more waste, less accountability and more opportunity for abuse - isn't it?

I look at Walmart's responses to recent natural disasters as a great example. It's easy (for me at least) to imagine just how bad that could turn out, but it's also hard not to scoff at the public sector's ineptitude.

Re: I pee pee

No, that joke pretty much had to be made. I hadn't seen the dev site in several months and at the time we didn't talk about OpenID (we should have). Founder Mark Daher pinged me today to say it was going live and I didn't even have to try to remember my login - what a simple but joyous thing! I sure wish more companies would do that.

I thought the previous version of Rootly was pretty unexciting, and I wasn't sure they could pull of something very cool - but looking at it now, they did a really great job. Once OPML import is added (any week now they say) I'll be popping a link to Rootly up in my toolbar and using it to search all my favorite feeds.

Re: 2007/05/24/technorati-wtf-lets-give-it-another-chance/

I've just begun to get excited by WTF myself. Related to that is this good quote from the Wikipedia entry for "model minority" - US focused here and just part of the story, but part of it for sure it seems to me.

"While superficially complimentary to Asian Americans, the real purpose and effect of this portrayal is to celebrate the status quo in race relations. First, by over-emphasizing Asian American success, it de-emphasizes the problems Asian Americans continue to face from racial discrimination in all areas of public and private life. Second, by misrepresenting Asian American success as proof that the US provides equal opportunities for those who conform and work hard, it excuses US society from careful scrutiny on issues of race in general, and on the persistence of racism against Asian Americans in particular."

That's the last I'll say about it here though, as it's really not my issue to take on and like I said - I didn't think much of it myself until talking to someone else and reading that post at 8Asians, which, btw I don't think is over the top at all.

Re: 2007/08/01/splashcast-white-label-facebook-app/

Billy, long time no see! thanks for your comment, we're real proud of how slick those skins are for sure. they'll also travel with the player's embed code outside of Facebook and onto any page on the web.

Re: 2007/08/01/gofish-bolt/

Good catch Pete. Judi's right, it's not about selling emails - the buyers bring the email adresses they already have and ask Rapleaf "what do you know about these people? are they more likely to be MySpace users or Facebook users?" I think there's some potential for a legitimate business model there, specifically the opposite of "more commercial crap you don’t want." Instead, marketing that's more like Adsense than it is like pop-ups. Hopefully. I wrote about this whole situation at length at http://marshallk.com/rapleaf-and-their-problems

Many of us (you and I included) may be capable of creating social media content that serves marketing goals, but I don't think that will ever make up 100% of the marketing efforts online - not even close. For the rest of the world, data mining grounded in user control of that data (the kind of thing Rapleaf has the potential to facilitate) makes a lot of sense to me.

Rapleaf is guilty of a lot of things, but I disagree with your characterization of them here. I'm really hoping they get it together - and that doesn't preclude selling information to marketers, in my mind.

Re: 7,200 Google Reader lockins

I'm using a FeedBurner feed for my shared items in part because of this. I think you're spot on. I do think, though, that you're missing the subscription/syndication element; TechCrunch has a half mill subscribers, BoingBoing has what 1.5m? That's big stuff, isn't it?

Re your final vision: content producers determining attention sounds like Techmeme.

Re: Digg Is The Apotheosis Of Niche Media

Which of those headlines do you see as pointing to liberal politics?? Only a little imagination is required to see a future where all 3 of the companies you mention here are viable, not to mention Google.

Re: The Race of Also-Rans: French Video Sharing Site Dailymotion Raises $34 Million; More To Come

Is there a 5X exit likely for each of these investments, perhaps not, but I respectfully submit that when we look at the history of this era, sites like Guba and Bolt (got good traffic, then dropped the ball) will be the exception, not the rule. The utility of these services is so powerful that once one is differentiated by traffic (in most cases that's the only differentiator, right?) then I don't think betting on them is nearly as crazy as many jaded, top tech bloggers make it sound. There's a lot of people that watch video online, and there's only going to be a whole lot more in the future. The above sites get, say 10% of the traffic YouTube does - that's a lot! It indicates to me that it's not crazy to think they could get more. Will that traffic equal money? Someday soon, it will. Having a ton of people hanging out somewhere and not knowing how to make money from them is not the kind of problem I'd bet against seeing solved in an industry so full of creative people.

Sorry for the long comment, but I really don't believe any of the above sites can be called also-rans yet, far from it, and I think the industry has a hell of a lot more juice than many people want to give it credit for.

Re: MySpace SVP of Marketing & Content Shawn Gold Leaving

If it turns out to be a Facebook ad network I am going to CRACK UP.

Re: NPR Mobile Strategy Mixes Text With Live And On-Demand Audio

Very curious to try this out and compare it with Public Radio Tuner. That app is awesome, but it does have some performance issues. It feels like most iPhone apps do, though. I love Twitter and am the belief that there's lots of biz model opportunities - though I imagine it will get scooped up by a larger player before one is decided on. Such strong community combined increasingly solid, paradigm shifting functionality makes a sound looking investment to me. Look forward to seeing what you all can do together.
