in The latest on Facebook’s German insurgency: A contest about who does good deeds on Facebook on VentureBeat
Soon-to-be US House Speaker Dennis Hastert told the Columbian military not to worry about congressional restrictions on US military aid that required them to cut ties to paramilitary squads that cut peoples' heads off with chainsaws in order to soften villages up. He said the restrictions were due to a leftist dominated congress and that he'd work to remove them. See National Security Archives at George Washington University, this post http://tinyurl.com/3ehvc8 Document #52 in particular.

It's no coincidence either. Hastert et al. are in league with those folks who said "I made that food stamp cartoon with Obama, watermelon and chicken because watermelon and chicken are food, that's all!" http://tinyurl.com/49jqj8

These people know exactly what they are doing. What's my point? That I'm not so sure Mark Zuckerberg knows what he's doing.

in The most underhyped Silicon Valley success: Meebo on Scobleizer
See also this other post of ours http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/meebo_main... where we ask "Is Meebo really worth a $200m valuation?" and answer "hell yeah, it is." Agreed that this company is really interesting. Thanks for reading RWW, too, Robert.

in Storytelling ROI: social engagement metrics for Marketing & Social Media bloggers on AideRSS Blog
This is an interesting list and a great exercise in social media marketing as well! If you displayed those bloggers' names as text instead of in an image they would show up in ego searches and be clickable though. A trackback to their most engaging recent post would also be very effective. What do I know, though, am I on that list? No! lol, good stuff as always though AideRSS folks!

in Iran to Kill Bloggers? on David Risley
Whatever Gregory, go f*ck yourself. I think the video David posted here spells it out pretty well. Imagine any of those kids being executed for what they are doing here. Nobody said Iran wasn't a beautiful country, you creep.

in Toluu Adds More Features, Helps You Decide How to Subscribe on sarahintampa
The UI is still unappealing to me. I'd really like to use Toluu to manage a few thousand feeds but it doesn't feel set up for that. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree and should use it for its intended purpose :)

calebelston Marshall, I hear you on Toluu not having a great way to manage more than a few hundred feeds. We want to help people organize their feeds better as well. We are working on some organizational tools that should help. But, even just contributing what you are reading would be fantastic until then, so the rest of the people on Toluu and passersby can see what feeds you keep your eye on.

in Some Data On MySpace Apps Almost One Week After Launch on A VC
I take that back, after looking at these a bit more I can see that viral spread is already happening. Top pics app for example notified my friends and sat on my profile, so anybody could be adding it now.

in Some Data On MySpace Apps Almost One Week After Launch on A VC
MySpace is rolling things out in stages and hasn't done any promotion of the apps to users at all yet. While interesting, I think these numbers probably say more about tech blog readers than MySpace users in general.

in Interview with Marshall Kirkpatrick (Scripting News) on Scripting News
Hey Bret, sorry I left such a hostile comment, I'll have to look at the FOAF file too - I'm sure you know what people would like to take with them if they leave FF. Good luck, M

Bret, that OPML file contains only the feeds that I brought in with me, not the feeds I subscribed to in FriendFeed. I understand that you work with more than just RSS feeds, but I presumed when I read your comment that you meant I could export the feeds of the friends I'm following. That way, the work I put into your service wouldn't be lost if I decided to go to another lifestreaming service. As it is, you're holding all my subscriptions to yourself - creating a barrier to me leaving. Why do that? Why not just win my loyalty through good faith and superior service?

Bret Taylor Marshall, I promise you our philosophy is in line with yours, and any lack of data is related to a lack of time, not a strategic decision.

Does the FOAF file I linked to above meet your needs? It contains all the people you are subscribed to as well as the services you use. I am not as familiar with OPML, but the available tags in FOAF seemed to fit the data in FriendFeed more directly, which is why it has more data. We would be happy to implement an OPML version of that if folks want it. (Let me know if I am misunderstanding what you are asking for.)

Robert, thanks for all the work you've done around this already. Your experimenting with the Plaxo scraper and then doing all that media around it to discuss the issues was great. Very controversial and I don't think there are clear-cut answers but your work was a real service to users in terms of forcing the issue and discussing it articulately.

in What Is This You Bring My America? on Hungry Blues
Good post, though I'm afraid that turning back the privitization of state functions is going to be a very difficult sell because of the arguably superior efficacy of the private sector. It's hard to know which approach incurs more waste, less accountability and more opportunity for abuse - isn't it?

I look at Walmart's responses to recent natural disasters as a great example. It's easy (for me at least) to imagine just how bad that could turn out, but it's also hard not to scoff at the public sector's ineptitude.

davecodecast Marshall, when you view a picture on the Events page, then click on its name, you'll have the option of adding it to your outgoing RSS feed or sending a link to the picture to Twitter. It's a checkbox at the bottom of the page.

in Bloglines sucks on Scobleizer
Fwiw, Google Reader doesn't scale well over 1k feeds and Bloglines is publicly moving to support protocols like OpenID and APML. The way that Ask.com blogsearch leverages Bloglines subscriber numbers to fight spam is another thing Google Reader could learn from. I don't use Bloglines myself (I use Newsgator's NNW on the desktop) but I'm just saying, total Google Reader triumphalism isn't warranted imho.
