You don't get the idea. Imagine you're on a sofa. No table in front of you. On your right, you put you piping hot pizza on a plate. On your left is your gal. In your left hand is a beer. You've got no place to put your beer down, it would just fall on the sofa. How are you going to eat the pizza now, without this thing? You can't ask her to hold it for you, how lame is that? You can't take it in your hand, it's too hot.

Get it?

It's great!

Re: OhGizmo! » Archive » Zaphod, Multiple Clipboards For All Of Windows

That's funny... I can't remember Zaphod having three arms, and I read the book two months ago. I must really be getting stupider by the day. In any case, no, it's not really necessary. Then again, what other things aside from maybe air, water and food are necessary? :) I guess it'll make some people's lives just a little bit easier, for whatever that's worth.

Re: The $100,000 Banner

No updates on the week-end my friend. Lemme get on the record here. Yes, a Slashdotting or Digging would bring in more than $25. But I'm running a business here, and more importantly, this is my only source of income. So, no, I won't give all the cash I make away. What sense does that make?

And yes, there's a ton of ads. I'm aware, and it pisses even me off. I have to draw a line between too many that it turns people off, and too little so that I can't devote as much time to the site as I want because I have to work. I also happen to go to college full time, and yes, even sleep now and then.

I have made sure to stay away from the more annoying ads, like pop-overs/unders, flashing free iPods and other really lucrative, but immensely annoying ads. I have tried to make sure to identify ads and separate them from content. I make sure to keep some sort of professional integrity. No one pays me to say something nice about their product, and if I ever ask you to click on something that might bring me profit, I try as much as possible to make that clear.

I have looked at other, high traffic sites and tried to reproduce the same content to ad ratio. While I don't presume to bring the same type of quality content as Boingboing or Engadget, I certainly don't have more ads than them.

That said, ads piss me off too. So I'm sorry for them. But it's the only way that I can justify spending so much time working on this site.

Re: OhGizmo! » Archive » Compucars, Sportscar Shaped PC

Hi Bruce, thanks for your comment. That banner will go, to be replaced by shorter lived small banner ads to compensate the advertisers who already signed up. And the redesign, well... I haven't said anything, becuase, like you said, I already sound like the boy who cried wolf. I'm in talks with (yet another) someone, and I'll eventually post a firm date. The thing about redesiging, at least properly, is that it ain't cheap. If you want it done a certain way, and professionally, it's always in the four figures. At least form my experience. But I may have found someone. So for now, keep coming for the content. To make the decision to air all this in front of people is not a small one, and you have to make decisions about how much information is enough, and how much is too much. While the extra info I have IS pertinent, what I have said so far should be sufficient.

In a way, I feel that my mentioning this "extra info" has been a mistake. People are pouncing on it, and blowing it out of proportion, as if I had some sort of smoking gun that I'm, for some devious reason, purposely hiding. It's nothing of the sort. If it was pivotal to the case, ugly as I feel it is, I would have mentioned it. It's just a few more little details that, when considered as part of a greater context, help paint a slightly clearer picture.

If you wish to know more, you may contact me directly, and we can discuss this privately. The email is always "editor" at this domain. Only know that I have every intention to keep what I tell you private.

And Vinny, when you learn to adopt a tone that isn't agressive and confrontational, maybe I'll pay attention to you. I "noticed" you in the digg comments just fine, I'm just choosing to ignore you.

Re: OhGizmo! » Archive » Hydrofoil Water Scooter

I don't answer all comments, Shari. A lot of trolls around, and there's no point feeding them.

But to address what you're saying, the truth is that you've put your finger on a pretty gray area of blogging ethics. I mean, just WHO do you credit? The site you found the story on? Or the site that did the research, and originated the story? Or the site that cleaned up a crappy JPEG to make us enjoy the news item more?

To make things worse, as you pointed out with Uncrate, sometimes if you find a story, the site doesn't provide you with a direction to go to. In these cases, unless you've stumbled across the news item elsewhere before, there's really no way for you to know who to credit aside from the site you first found it on.

Also, as Bruce pointed out, there IS the faraway possibility that the person did originate the story on their own, though, as you've pointed out through your research, this doesn't seem to be the case with Uncrate. Sadly.

So, the question becomes: do you simply ignore the story, because it comes from a site you've branded as unethical? In my opinion, it depends. It depends on just what site it is. Some sites, smaller ones, have less of a responsibility to be ethical in my eyes (of course, in theory, everyone does, but in my reality, I ask myself "Who cares?" Obviously, you do, and maybe I should re-evaluate my standards.)

Nevertheless, you're left with a situation where you have to weigh the "loss" you incur from refraining to write an article about something, against the somewhat less tangible moral benefit you gain from avoiding sending traffic to a site that you've decided didn't deserve it.

In the end (and it would be hypocritical to pretend otherwise), we're really all in it for the money. Sure, we love entertaining others, and being read, but we put enormous amounts of time and effort in doing this, and most of us don't expect to do it for free.

Don't get me wrong, there certainly are exceptions, and I'd be curious to know just what proportion of bloggers do this for fun, and what proportion do it for financial gain.

In any case, Shari, thank you for pointing this out to me. To be honest, I hadn't even noticed. I can't promise you that I'll change anything, but I'm open to the idea.

Re: OhGizmo! » Archive » Change On The Horizon

Fixed. We let you in on these things for a variety of reasons. One, a few thousand of you testing things for us is definitely better than three of us looking around to make sure nothing's broken. Two, we think you might benefit from our mistakes, and not have to go through the same hassles yourselves.

When we got the Dedicated Virtual package at Media Temple, it seemed like a no-brainer. We were coming from a $8 a month(or something like that) shared hosting from Bluehost (before that, it was the unmentionable Dreamhost), and we thought that $75 a month was definitely, without question give us more horsepower. Well, it turns out we were wrong, and there was no way to test this before doing the switch: the problem only occurred once traffic started coming into the new server.

The DV server is nice, but it's a (virtual) box with limited resources, and getting more resources cost a lot more. The Grid, on the other hand, should in theory be better able to handle our traffic, since it scales and distributes the computing power over hundreds of servers when needed. But that's in theory, and we've heard a few horror stories from Media Temple. So, let me say here, there's a decent chance we'll be moving again.

But, maybe this time we won't tell anyone. :)

Re: OhGizmo! » Archive » Tritton AXPC 5.1 USB Gaming Headset Reviewed. There's enough people in America with that kind of money But the point is: what will you DO with this at home? When all the applications that are on it, at first, will be for commercial use... I guess you can use it to place your dinner orders for your wife to cook...

Re: OhGizmo! » Archive » Epoq MP4 Video Watch Poses As A Metal Dress Watch

Andrew... you didn't just say you didn't want to watch Transformers, did you? I'm one of John Battelle's authors, part of Federated Media. We've been blogging for a good two years now. The site's ohgizmo.com. Even though we may seem like "yet another gadget blog", if you do give the site a quick visit, you'll see there's more to it than regular, mainstream gadgets.

Thanks for the opportunity.
