Thanks for putting the transcript notes, images and video here for all to share.

I think video and social media and the social apps as the platform (facebook) is the next shift that we are witnessing.

Personalized channels of content is where the web is moving, with social aspects surrounding those channels as points of gravity for conversation and knowledge sharing. The future is coming fast.

Rodney Rumford
ceo: http://www.videosticky.com

Re: The Future of the Social Web: In Five Eras

I have just finished reading the report and find it fascinating. Jeremiah, You have nailed many aspects and issues that need to be more clearly understood by marketing professionals. And Paula Drum with H&R Block is a smart one and is spot on with her answer.

Of course they should. They should be practitioners and eat their own dog food. Anyone/company/agency that does not and tries to sell their services/products is full of it. 100k for a blog strategy and they don't blog? I can't believe the audacity.

The message here is: Fire your agency if they are not executing what they are selling for their own business.

Cheeers!

Re: Intel’s Community Marketing: Fishing Where The Fish Are

As always. Great insights Jeremiah.

I like this line the best: David said that one of the requirements of his marketing efforts was to not link to Intel.com

Smart. Users don't want to be pulled away from the ecosystem that they are in to some lame brand or corp website. Yanking them away is web1.0 mentality and not tolerated by many users any longer.

I like the fact that they experiment. This is what brands need to be doing in this new evolution of online engagement and conversations.

Cheers!
Rodney

Re: What’s after the Social Web?

Great blog post Jeremiah.

I would like to hear in more detail how oreilly thinks that people are using ther term web 2.0 incorrectly.

"large corporations haven’t figured out how to fully embrace the social web –let alone think about what’s next"... You have missed some forms of monetization that are being used.

1. Lead Generation: people fill out forms = money
2. Incentives inside of apps/widgets to download something (ie. toolbar) $1-2 bucks per download
3. Virtual goods: animated gifts, animated greeting cards, avatars, custom videos, etc. $1-5
4. Payment to skip levels and attain status or leveling in social games/apps/widgets.

I suspect that many more ways to monetize or show expanded ROI will emerge once brands become more aware of how they can engage and determine the value of a new customer/user.

When facebook launches it's fully integrated payment plan I would suspect that commerce will rise as people will no longer have to worry about trust of financial purchase transactions. much in the same way that people all think paypal is safe. Facebook facilitating seamless secure transactions will increase the value of apps. and open a whole new way to monetize.

Users will soon be able to purchase & download music, movies, videos, PDF, etc.

Cheers!

Rodney Rumford
www.twitter.com/rumford

Re: Video: Sea World’s Social Media Program and Measurement (7:10)

I liked the way that they went specifically after the coaster enthusiasts and also put up their images on flickr under creative commons.

The lady acted surprised that for the first time that more people found out about the coaster online versus any other media. There great challenges & opportunities.

But clearly the "build it they will come" mentality days are behind us. A clearly defined strategy will go a long way.

Note to Len @4 "Brand Relevancy? Not all brands have a “sexy” tangible product that can easily translate to widgets. EG. Insurance, Certain Packaged Goods, etc."

A brand does not need to be sexy to work. here are a few ideas off the top of my head.

Insurance: A widget that brings to the surface connections about accident occurrences, risks, etc. Make it a engaging game where people can see who has the riskiest behavior. ;)

Consumer packaged good: Let's use Monster Energy drink as an example. You could have an app that challenges people to share extreme behavior and compete for status in a lifestyle behavior type of app.

The opportunities are many. It just takes several hours of brainstorming to flush out the best ideas on a high level.

Cheers!

Rodney Rumford
www.facereviews.com

Re: Facebook: Innovative yet Conceited

I like the idea of a test group as a feedback loop before they launch new products (pages, beacon, etc.). This would help them have a feedback loop from power users before they roll new stuff public.

They could easily do this with minimal slowing of rapid deployment and innovation. It is my belief that they could be moving this way.

A recent example is the payment system that is forthcoming. They have reached out to the developer community for beta testers (who must remain under full NDA). This is a good start in that direction.

I know that several times the feedback that I have provided has actually been enacted upon by their product team.

The real challenge is to balance true innovation (which always pushes the boundaries) and mere improvements.

Whatever they decide to do; I think we are seeing a company that is starting to learn from it's past mistakes.

Cheers!

Rodney Rumford
Publisher: www.FaceReviews.com

Re: Video: The pitfalls no one tells you about Widgets (3 min with Rodney Rumford)

Jeremiah,
It was a pleasure to chat and share this relevant information with your audience. Since you try to keep these videos under 3 minutes I did not have the opportunity to share the following... Enjoy.

How to Create Gravity in Social Networks:
Key issues for brands engaging in Facebook (and now Bebo) with an application.

1. Go light handed on the branding: An application can be "sponsored" by a brand. Don't beat users over the head.

2. Build apps that "Look and Feel" like facebook. Don't have graphics with colors that overpower or clash with the facebook frame if possible.

3. Don't use rounded tabs for navigation. 95% of facebook apps use the same style of tab. Do the same. Users engage with familiarity of design.

4. Plan on A/B split testing & measurement for ongoing tweaks of your application.

5. Change 1 thing at a time for iterations and measurement towards desired metrics.

6. Pay very close attention to any trend or change in behavior; Un-install rate increasing for example.

7. Wording is very critical for influencing behavior. Change and measure.

8. Pay close attention to the marketing flow of how you pull users through your application and force desired behaviors.

9. Consider "levels" or "rewards" as an incentive for participation. This means unlocking specific features of the app when a user takes desired behaviors.

10. Invites are critical. Do it right.

11. Look at how you can easily expose behaviors through the viral carrier mechanisms available (mini-feed, news-feed, notifications, email, participatory sharing, etc.) without the user not having to think about sharing information.

12. I am done for now. I have at least 20 more. ;)

Cheers!
Rodney Rumford
Publisher:FaceReviews.com

Re: Pursuing the Web Strategy mission as a Forrester Analyst

Jerimiah,
Sorry to see you leave podtech. There are many reasons for this but the bottom line is this is win/win/win across the board and developers can still monetize their apps.

Another way to look at this is that developers are not handing over their users to facebook, rather the opposite. You get to leverage their network. As more useful applications are launched it will spread even deeper into user behavior patterns and new people will join the network (platform). What these people don't realize is that their behavior is only marginally effective at best. It does add noise. Twitter might simply add a report spam button that would pull those tweets out of the trending hashtag stream via an automated algorithm.

mundane trending topics light goodnight will eventually not be in trending topics as they might eventually become blacklisted trending topics very easily with an editorial control on twitters end. "Gaming" trending topics will come to an end soon enough. Twitter is focused on keeping the wheels on the bus.

What is relevant is a bit of an editorial call and at this point twitter does not seem to be overly concerned as a lot of these trending topics fall off the list quickly enough.

Thanks for sharing your thoughs

cheers!

Re: Why Twitter Mobile Apps Don’t Interest Me

You are being idealistic.

I hear your point but this is the world we now live in. Your post should help people manage the process and get them thinking about what matters most.

Having a process is critical or you will drown in the social river. I have set up a number of automated scripts for listening. Another option is custom persistent search queries across multiple social platforms that act as alert mechanisms. (these can all be done with free tools) PING!

Decide which eco-systems are of the most relevance and decide on a process for listening, response and interaction.

Listening is the first step for brand reputation, marketing, topic convo discovery, connections, etc.

Once you know how to efficiently listen it becomes infinitely easier to engage, start conversations and be responsive in a timely manner that does not suck your time.

Some efficiency and listening details are outlined in a chapter in my book: Twitter as a Business Tool.
http://www.twitterbusinessbook.com/the-book-kit

Cheers!
http://twitter.com/rumford

Re: Threading Some Trends Together

People need to realize that they are their own personal brand. I just finished it and I have to tell you that I really enjoyed it. I like the way that it was written and how it really addressed the culture issues that companies need to be aware of and embrace this new media. Smart ones will, not so smart ones will be left behind.

I am going to recommend this book as required reading to all of my corporate blog clients and prospects.

We have been blogging for a few years and setting up corporate blogs for business clients and the one common challenge is that these initiatives fall into the marketing groups many times. While this is not a bad thing, it does present some challenges in trying to get them to understand that a Business blog is not written by the PR department. It needs to be genuine and really have great value added content; not just marketing & PR speak.

We always recommend that the subject matter experts create the content. I was recently speaking at the San Diego Software Industry Council and gave a 1.5 hour Presentation on how Business Blogs & Podcasts are rapidly changing the way that companies communicate with clients and prospects. (send me an email and i will send you the flash video presentation, PDF notebook and 64 slides)

The really exciting thing is that we are really in the infancy of how Blogs, Podcasts (and the underlying RSS) can be used.

I am excited about the advances that Team RSS & Live.com are making at Microsoft; as this will drive consumption of these conversations and content. Tell them to keep up the good work.

Any chance you will be in Southern Cal for your book tour? They should have you do podcasts of your book tour. How cool would that be! Your book publisher (Wiley) should be all over that.

Rodney Rumford
http://blog.leveragedpromotion.com
http://blog.podblaze.com

Re: Blog Herald doesn’t understand why full-text feeds work

WOW, The debate is hot and heated.

I think the one thing that publishers should be aware of is the user experience. As a publisher of content I would want the user to have the best possible experience so I would always recommend publishing full feeds for this reason.

You have to understand that many publishers have no desire whatsoever to monetize their content in the traditional advertising model form (PPC or ads).

Perhaps the publisher makes thier money by delivering quality value added content to their user base or target customer base. The readers become evangelist, or extends the WOMM (word of mouth marketing). The customers become more loyal...etc...they increase sales.

Publish full content and extend the brand and don't try to make a dime from advertising is a model that works for many businesses. They let everyone syndicate the full content.

This is why a full RSS Content Delivery Strategy needs to be designed before businesses start blogging to make sure they can deliver what the audience wants.

My vote is for full feed content.

Rodney Rumford
http://leveragedpromotion.com

Re: Leo Laporte leaves Twitter for Jaiku

I heard Leo on the radio this weekend talking about twitter and jaiku. Lot's of smart people (Danny, Dave, and thousands more) were paying you attention. Attention currency sometimes comes at a price.

I think part of the reason that this firestorm spread so fast is that people were watching YOU and then chatting via the Kyte.tv player that got embedded everywhere. I use it for my channels of distributing video/slideshows, etc. as well. I think that it is the first time that they have embedded it at techcrunch

I had a blast participating in the chat sessions for hours over the course of the first day. What some people might not be aware of is that you had well over 600 people continually on the kyte channel watching video and chatting. That was really crazy.

It is nice to see the chat at a level that is easier to follow since it has slowed down.

Finally; admitting where you are wrong takes balls. Death is never easy and perhaps this life moment will help you to to reflect on what is important in your life with your wife and soon to be born son.

I have lost friends when they were way too young and all you can say is that your heart goes out to his wife and young family. Sounds like you both had a great connection with him. Cherish those memories.

It sounds like his passing really effected both Mariyam and yourself. I am sorry you are all feeling a loss.

When I have been in similar situations I always celebrate the life and the blessings that that person has bestowed upon me. You have done that.

The last gift David has given your family is perspective to reflect on the short time that we have here to make a positive impact on people and be the best that we can be and share and embrace people positively... You have been more than generous with your time with me and I am truly grateful for that.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family that David left behind. Remember that he will always be with you and on this earth in spirit. God bless his soul and the people he touched.

Rodney Rumford

Re: A day of social networking, 150 million views a day (on RockYou)

Pretty cool stuff. One of the trends that we are seeing is bloggers adding a video channel of aggregated videos(from multiple sources such as myspace, yahoo video, google video, youtube, photobucket, metacafe, etc.) that is relevant to their target readers.

These video channels (playlists) can be embeded in a widget into the sidebar and the user(blog readers) can consume the video directly on the blog and not have to be directed back offsite to the original source. It is a way that blog authors can become even more valuable to their readers and substantially increase readers time on the blog and provide better content. ;)

You can see an example on our comapny blog at http://www.videosticky.com/blog

Cheers!

Rodney Rumford
Founder: videosticky.com

Re: Motrin Faces Twitter Headache Over New Video Campaign

Andy,

I am not sure who it represents. It really exposes one of the viral components that most people don't understand about Twitter. The art and science of the retweet is really based on a combination of influence, audience size, value of the information, time of day, listeners ability to hear the message, etc.

I actually wrote a case study in my upcoming Definitive Guide to Using Twitter where we had a large retweet response and actually measured, dissected, and analyzed at how many separate layers/degrees it radiated out, traffic drawn and ultimate conversions on the backside. This is truly fascinating information.

I actually think this is just the tip of the value iceberg submerged in Twitter. Thanks for shedding some light on this with this really nice early stage tool.

Cheers!
Rodney Rumford
http://facereviews.com/twitter-book

Re: THE LAUNCH: The Age of Conversation Bum Rush

Gonna get the book.
