we've got a group of young teens that apparently are 'breaking' into cars that are not locked and taking random change or other money they can get a hold of. they stay away from me because i've told them my dogs can & will jump our fence to go after them.. which, one of them will.

thomas merton is a great writer on the principles of silence. to note, a vow of silence is not a general vow within the monastic tradition, it's taken on by those who feel a bit more radical. but, rich, is right in sharing that we fill our lives with so much. merton would say we do that because it's sometimes scary to be alone with God in silence and find out who one truly is.

ragamuffin gospel is great. changed the way i view my life and ministry. check out some nouwen. i'd suggest 'way of the heart' would be a good ss reader. chapters are not heavy, but it is deep spiritual reflections and includes practices for life.

that is funny stuff, we actually showed it as a illustration video for youth one night as a fanatic adhearance to rules can lead down strange paths. it was the talk of youth for quite a few weeks after. it still comes up every now and then. oh, and the ladies were confused to know that we have guy rules to the bathroom.

my lone fall aim weekend i ended up spending most of my time with the children of the home we were working at. partly cause the other adults were so consumed with the work that i needed a break from them. i tried so joking around and they didn't get it, so i just played around with the two kids of the house. lots of fun, lots of trampoline. so you might get your interaction you are used to.

hey dj, our church does a lot of strengths training & workshops for families, individual members, and the community. one of our primary teachers is youth leader for our youth community and does an exhaustive strengths exploration with our graduating seniors.

not sure if we are a strengths church, but we sure emphasize it a lot.

as danny puts in his apology post, i'd say its not francis that is a sellout (though his book publishers might be happy with him doing all the conference work he is doing) but to me, from the white anglo male side, he's one of those christian leaders that translates well from an ethnic culture we generally do not understand. lets face it, the likes of catalyst or other super church conferences are many times all anglo & majority male. i'd say its we that exploit the african, female, asian, native american leaders that translate well for us.

i once walked through opryland hotel here in nashville (a known destination for conferences) and there were three christian conferences happening at the same time. 1 was my own tribe's evangelism conference 2 was a national childrens ministry conference 3 was described to me as a holy spirit conference. my own tribes was mostly male & white in presenters, the childrens i didn't check out, but the holy spirit one (which i was particularly fascinated by) didn't have a single white male presenter in their midst and i'd argue that there were not many mainline/evangelical white leaders in attendance.

we like the people that relate to us, its on us more than it is chan.. my opinion

our connectionalism might be a good place to examine. jay voorhees has some great posts on how we are not actually connected. some of the blogs on the methoblog are quite infrequent or do not participate in the great community. that's okay, we are happy to uplift them when they do put out content.

viral needs a bigger audience and we are the early adopters and a small group of people. 250 blogs don't even make up the clergy voice in most conferences. let alone laity. but, a lot of people are looking at our individual stuff, so we are participating by linking back and forth.. which is something i think we need to recapture from early days of blogging (before twitter linking or google reader sharing/starring) people who haven't gotten into that realm are missing some element of connection that we share.

one of the glazed over questions that is excellent to know, is who is in control of the news. if kutcher or some other celeb puts their stuff out there it can't be gossip turned up by a poparazzi or tabloid mag. it generally just doesn't take..

however, a regular person puts something online then it becomes a phenomenon with all the major news taking it on as a news story and a life of its own. a rather fascinating parallel behavior

i don't know if i can say i have the same extent of regrets, but in many ways i am right with you brother. the amount of stuff my niece and nephews received just overwhelmed erin & myself. we talked about it on the ride home. "how much is too much?" if we got our children this amount, then this person, this person, this person, etc will get them something and that will be like 20 things.. holy crap! how do we avoid that?

we have talked about possibly getting everyone to pitch in on something, like a massive gift certificate for kid stuff that is needed, as needed. beyond that, we are stumped.

we did do a cool thing with on of our family "dirty santas" we started exchanging gifts from within our homes. so no one bought anything. we also had a sorta casino night where we bought chips, gambled with each other (darts, cards, loose dice game, etc.) trying to win for our designated charities. after one hour the top three money winners split the whole pot and donated to their charities. it was fun and something that was started when my cousin and i last year opted out of getting a 50 dollar gift for a donation to organizations that we are invested in.

just an idea.

the teens i was hanging out with liked the bud crab commercial too. we too had to explain Prince. bit of history, his symbol thing was to get out of a really bad recording contract. i didn't get to watch it in hd, but one could still see the rain, so i'll assume it was pretty good. sorry for the loss, i was pulling for the bears. not a popular choice in tennessee
