in Creating and Sharing with a Mobile Phone: a presentation on 14sandwiches
Enjoyed the session, Martin. Clear, concise and chock full of helpful pointers on how to get set up using each of the mobile sharing services presented.

Apologies for noseying off before the end of the Q&A to get involved with the Someone Once Told Me thingy....! Was well worth the effort. ;o)

MartinSFP Sony certainly does seem in a mess these days. To put another perspective on the Playstation phone thing, though - maybe the Playstation team realise that Sony Ericsson's current designs would damage the Playstation brand? As Nokia's N-Gage platform has shown over the past 12 months, mobile gaming is difficult to pull off successfully...

Thanks for the mention, Martin.

Unfortunately, this is to be expected from Sony.

Only last week, news broke about Sony preventing Sony Ericsson from making the PSP phone .

A house divided against itself will fall.

With Sony, it’s only a matter of time, I fear.

in Just How Much Transparency Should We Expect from President Obama? on Marketing Pilgrim
I actually think he will manage this OK.

Here in the UK, the recently launched Number10.gov.uk site has been very successful in keeping the public informed about the day to day work of the guy at number 10 Downing Street as attested to by its very popular Twitter feed:

It is possible to keep the dialogue going.

in Question for You- New Marketing on Chris Brogan
The services a new generation of marketing firms should offer include:

* Web content creation & strategy
* Brand reputation management and buzz monitoring
* Active social media engagement & participation
* Online community design and management

A bit wordy and off the cuff but those are the four that sprang to mind.

We have nothing like that in the UK.

My first brush with ‘christian’ social media has been @thechristianguy on Twitter.

He's a good guy to follow. Keeps it real, tweets some random stuff once in a while.

To answer your question, I suspect this will be par for the course in just a few years.

You are a church of X hundred/thousand regulars.

You’ve got your channel on cable, you’ve got your website nicely optimized and ranking high for Google searches for your area, you’ve got your church blog and video podcast…
you’ve got your church Twitterers.

Nothing wrong with that.

Real Fresh TV has been conducting a study of social media usage amongst FTSE 100 companies in the UK.

The ongoing study, the first of its kind is aimed at uncovering adoption of social media amongst companies in the UK, is already unearthing some surprises.

in Musicians Play for Tips- The Importance of Comments on Chris Brogan
Chris, I just posted a comment after yours at the Digital Influence Mapping Project blog so I guess I'm eating your dog food ;o)

As one who blogs from the UK I have to say there is evidence that a lot more people in the US comment on blogs.

In the UK, people seem to visit a blog, consume what they want and move on.

For that reason, I don’t read too much into the number of comments a blog receives. It’s more about the quality of the comments.

Having said that, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by those who tell me they enjoy my company blog. In person.

Good content is good content whether or not people comment.

Are you planning on running a similar course in the UK?

London or Manchester would be suitable hosts.

Would certainly attend and I'm sure it would be popular amongst digital strategists and brand managers.

Worth seriously considering anyway. Drop me a line if you want advice/help taking it transatlantic... Your blog has been very useful, happy to help.

in On Managing A Community on Chris Brogan
Fantastic post.

Much fat to chew on...

This post was a bit of an eye opener to me as the term 'Community Manager' implied 'Organiser of After School Club' to me and it may well appear so to many other readers from the UK. We are catching up though...

The Measurables and Duties sections were pretty useful.

I read it all the way to the last comment which says a lot.

Thanks.

in Some things I’ve learned this year that turned my world upside-down and I’m still trying to wrap my head around on Derek Sivers
Great stuff, Derek!

Checked out Reqall, Julian, pretty impressive...

The good thing is that even with limitless music distribution, there’s still a real need to connect with the artists behind good music.

The next few years will be good for musicians that recognize that:

- a solid touring fan base
- smart social networking
- clever hyper-cyber- digital distribution
- plus the odd brand endorsement

leave major record label deals in the dust…

in Making Money on Social Networks, Is It Possible? on Social Times
Great post, Nick.

You have omitted the fact that many brands opt for sponsored pages on MySpace because this allow them to create bespoke branded experiences within the social network.

Much of marketing is about extending brand associations and banner or text advertising cannot deliver this as effectively as images and video can.

My take?

The future of social advertising is in branded content.

in Facebook Users Won’t Pay on AllFacebook
Thanks for posting this, Nick.

I wrote an open letter to Facebook here about this on Saturday:

http://tinyurl.com/yvxurx

Cool to see it's someone’s asking the question, at least.

@Joe Grossberg:
Agreed, 4% may not be much but it's still a guaranteed revenue stream...

@Chris Kennedy:
I agree, I don't think the sample is representative.

I'm willing to bet I'm not in the demographic covered by that poll, not being a student and all that.

Perhaps the poll should be re-run and targeted towards the ‘Facebook-is-the-new-Linked-In’ crowd.

Would be interesting to see what busy, middle manager types think of receiving and inadvertently sending social ads.

in Bebo: Trying to help TV get social on Mathew's comments
This is a big deal because Bebo is the UK’s top social networking site, according to comScore:

http://www.comscore.com/press/release.asp?press...

Whilst there are many online TV sites vying for viewers' attention in North America, most large media companies in Europe are still dipping their toes into large scale video distribution on the web.

Open Media fills a big gap in online video distribution for media companies in the UK hence the involvement of established media companies like the BBC, Channel 4 and BSkyB.

I predict more high profile content partnership announcements from Bebo in the near future.

in My Facebook Ad Stats on A VC
Social Ads and Flyers on Facebook don't work for a reason:

People are on Facebook to communicate with people they know. Anything else is a distraction.

In my opinion, the most effective way to advertise on Facebook is to create a group focused on a particular topic and to target that group to a specific demographic.

The topic need not be named after the product or service being advertised, necessarily.

Provided the group is well moderated and features relevant and up-to-date information; people will have a reason to hang around and share their opinion. And you’ll get instant feedback...

Kind of sounds like a blog, actually...

Personally, I reckon Facebook should consider offering a monthly subscription for people who don't want to receive Social Ads. At least they are guaranteed some monthly revenue that way.

Here’s the open letter I wrote to Mark Zuckerberg regarding this:

http://http//www.realfresh.tv/hey-facebook-id-g...

I would consider paying...

in Would you pay for no Facebook ads? on Mathew's comments
Great post Mathew.

The pressing question is actually: 'How Will Facebook pass the EU's Privacy Test?'

There are fairly strict Data Protection laws in the UK, for example.

Here are a few:

* Data may only be used for the specific purposes for which it was collected.

* Data must not be disclosed to other parties without the consent of the individual whom it is about, unless there is legislation or other overriding legitimate reason to share the information (for example, the prevention or detection of crime). It is an offence for Other Parties to obtain this personal data without authorisation.

* Individuals have a right of access to the information held about them, subject to certain exceptions (for example, information held for the prevention or detection of crime).

* Personal information may be kept for no longer than is necessary.

* Personal information may not be transmitted outside the EEA unless the individual whom it is about has consented or adequate protection is in place, for example by the use of a prescribed form of contract to govern the transmission of the data.

* Subject to some exceptions for organisations that only do very simple processing, and for domestic use, all entities that process personal information must register with the Information Commissioner.

* Entities holding personal information are required to have adequate security measures in place. Those include technical measures (such as firewalls) and organisational measures (such as staff training).

Culled from a really comprehensive post on Mashable here:
http://mashable.com/2007/11/09/facebook-asks-ca...

My offer of £7.50 per month for a Facebook subscription without ads now seems a little... foolish. What's the point if agreeing to the Terms of Use mean that the privacy laws designed to protect me above, cannot.

Hmm...

Having said that, it will be interesting to see how Facebook's core demographic take to the ads.

It is quite possible that they might not care.

in Coca-Cola will never be my friend on Mathew's comments
Interesting thoughts and valid points.

I’m taking a slightly more contrarian view, however.

I’ve gotten enough value out of Facebook as it is that I am willing to pay a nominal monthly subscription so that I don’t see any Social Ads.
