in Justice Ginsburg: Abortion = Population Control on Caffeinated Thoughts
I would be careful to note that she did say she was wrong 3 sentences later.. "But when the court decided McRae, the case came out the other way. And then I realized that my perception of it had been altogether wrong."
I wish they would have done a better job following up on that.. How exactly was she wrong? She thought the court had a eugenic rationale for abortion, but after the ruling she recognized that it didn't? I don't follow... But now she will be allowed to say we are taking it out of context no matter what we say she meant.

in Quick Thought: Going to Church With An Abortion Doctor on Think Christian
I think all sinners should be welcomed in the pews. We all have murdurous hearts to one degree or another, and we need to be saved from ourselves.
I don't think that I would go to a Church that failed to consistantly call someone like that to repentance however. I certainly would leave if he was promoted into any form of leadership.

in Handheld devices in church? on Think Christian
On the other hand --
It is confessional -- If the preacher says something to you that resonates, and you share it with your twitter followers -- it ratifies a belief. Is it really any different than taking notes? Except for the part where others can instantly read your notes? Most churches have no objection to note-taking.
It is also important to mention that Mars Hill has been using such devices to ask and answer questions -- This allows their pastor to address their objections and questions head on, in a nearly instantaneous method.
No, they shouldn't be browsing the web - but I don't think the web will ever be quite as interesting or provocative as a Mark Driscoll Sermon, so I don't think that is a big concern.

These where retention bonuses... AIG made promises to employees who where very likely to lose their jobs that if they stayed on for x amount of time they would get paid... The employees kept their end of the bargain... Selling off the securities that paid their salary.. Now the Government wants to steal the money that they have worked for the last year for.
Be very careful here! Don't fall into the trap of letting the Dems agitate you into endorsing class warfare.

Yes I know. That is why, and I guess I should make that clear in the post, I am not in favor of taking these bonuses away or having the government disrupt contracts.
My main point with this is Grassley's reaction. Thank you for your warning!

Ahmadinejad talking seems to remember the Christ riding a Donkey, not Christ riding a White Stallion with a sword coming out of his mouth...
Yes, he will oppose the evil, but we are all evil. He is not coming back with an agenda of peace, but of War. See Rev 19:11-21

in McCain Goes To Washington on Caffeinated Thoughts
I think that McCain made the right move. Not sure I would have asked for the debate postponement, as that comes accross as cowardly.
McCain has a history of bi-partisen leadership, and a lengthy legislative resume. Obama doesn't. His going back to do what he does best just accentuates the "Talk is cheap" message.
Does anyone really change their mind because of Stump speeches or TV ads anyway? If they do, they are suckers.

If you are a Calvinist, the "God gene" doesn't seem to far fetched. Not sure there is any issue at all.

in going sinless for 50 years on djchuang.com
Christians these days seem to really like to eliminate the Sins of Commission, while ignoring almost entirely the sins of omission.
We sin whenever we fail to do what God would have us to do. That happens all of the time.
Remember the Wicked Servant in the parable of he talents kept his nose clean.

in Rethinking Jesus and Judaism on Think Christian
True Judaism was never practiced. Sabbath years, year of Jubilee etc. There is little record of many of the prescribed laws ever being practiced.
So he may have broken the traditions, but that doesn't mean that he broke the law, which was never kept by the traditions.

in The feminization of the church: is it a real trend? on Think Christian
I think it is subtle, but real. If you have been in the church for all your life, you probably don't notice it. If you are an outside tuning your radio to a Contemporary Christian Channel you will definately notice it.
There is no doubt that the demographics say most churches are 60-40 women. Men drop the ball and abandon, use and abuse women, and they run to God for comfort.
I do see it in my church when I look for it. If I don't look for it, I don't notice it, because I am immune.

Worldly prosperity is a curse. God knows that and has something better for us.
And yes, the prosperity gospel is idolatry that puts the gifts above the giver.

in Predestination - Where do You Stand? on Live.Awake
I believe that God is sovereign over all, including my will. He can harden and soften my heart according to his plan.
I am still responsible for my choices. My philosophy is that it is better to do what he ask than to spend 3 days inside of a stinky fish before I do what he asks.
It seems to me that we just have to throw out or glaze over way too much scripture to believe that we our will is really totally free. God gives us freedom, but he always has the trump card if he chooses to play it.

in Joel Osteen Bashing on Live.Awake
Osteen's Book deal is reportedly worth 13 Million dollars. He is definitely making a profit. I don't see much difference between the money changers and Osteen. He is standing in God's pulpit, and selling pop psychology instead of God's message.
Osteen is the strongest and most articulate voice in the word of faith movement. I don't think Driscoll could have explained their ideas nearly as well as Osteen did in the clip.
The youtube clip doesn't include the rest of the context of the sermon. He was showing all kinds of media clips from pop culture showing how we are sold all kinds of products using or pursuit of happiness. Osteen is doing nothing different than the magazines and advertisements that Driscoll had shown earlier.

I thought Driscoll was quite kind to Osteen. Shockingly nice actually. He was much harder on McLaren, Pragitt, and Bell a few weeks ago..
While I agree wholeheartedly with what he said, I thought he unchartaristically failed to preemptively respond the the most obvious objection to his argument. "Jesus suffered those things so that we didn't have to."
I believe when somebody publicly speaks or publishes an idea, it is in the marketplace of ideas and it fair game for debate. If somebody is teaching something that is wrong, it is immoral not to stand up for the truth. Driscoll did not attack Osteen, he pointed out the deficiency of his theology. The primary reason this theology needs to be debunked is because Osteen is using his credibility to spread it. Without mentioning that this idea is attached to the bestselling author who pastors the largest Church in America it seems too silly to spend time on.
Osteen preaches to the entire world as if they are saved, but he never tells them how to be saved. This is dangerous, and is likely to leave stadiums worth of people burning in hell. He needs to be confronted so perhaps he will repent, and some people could be saved.
There are several instances in the new testament where rebuke was public. They didn't have video, but they did write letters.

Also didn't really bring it up in this post, but having a sitting Supreme Court Justice, openly endorse a nominee is unheard of and inappropriate.
