A few thoughts about comedians and humor when it comes to church.
1) Dude, go for it! Get your butt on stage and make us laugh! The church is just too funny.
2) I use humor/sarcasm/biting wit in my sermons all the time, most of the time it works but sometimes (If I do say so myself ;-), I KNOW there are times I rely on humor far too much. I think the gift is to use humor in a way that engages folks with the preacher, builds relationships and opens up opportunities for transformation.
3) Ministry without healthy laughter is BORING.
4) Chris Rock . . . ROCKS! His best advice is for fathers raising daughters. Just keep her off the Pole. If your daughter is dancing on the pole in some club, you have failed. I must agree.

Oh one more comment about Tim's closing remarks. AMEN! I have been trying to talk about the connections between Asian culture and postmodernity for a while and until e-meeting some of y'all, I would blank stares from the White folks and suspicious ones from the Asians . . . Asian Emergents UNITE!

DJ, hope the class went well. Must admit I "Sped-read" the post the first time otherwise i would had offered some more ideas. My bad ;-)

On this that I think would be important is around why is seems that so many Asian Americans seems to be attracted to a more "conservative" style of faith. I have my own ideas regarding issues of work ethic, achievement issues, etc., but I would assume that there would be some "radicals" who questions the church's ability to deal with issues of social justice and the public square.

DJ . . . thanks for always keeping us in the loop. the event looks great. and yes, accuse me of always coming back to race, but . . . i would be curious as to the inclusion on Asian Americans in the conversation. Could there really NOT be one that was qualified and available out of 21 speakers?

I raise this because i think one of the issues that the emerging/postmodern church has not dealt with well has been race. I suspect that there is some idea that class/socioeconomics outweigh issues of race, but that is just a thought at this point . . .

Helpful as always my friend! There is the added idea that each blog needs to be focused on a particular thing if you want drive traffic there. I break this rule all over the place on my main blog, but am going to try and focus more on a couple of other blogs and podcasts. We'll see.

Man, solid thought-proving stuff. I am not a big Keller fan just because of where he lands on some issues, but ya can't argue the impact of Redeemer and his ministry. Still, i think you raise some REALLY good points. I too think it will be in the "long-tail" types of church experience where most meaningful, relationship-based transformation happens.

Yeah, things like this are very dangerous because: one, folks will say "What? It was positive!" or "Wow, you are being so sensitive." These are the kinds of seemingly innocent perspectives that lead to injustice both institutional and individual. I think a posture of hope driven by righteous indignation - as opposed to a denial-laden pollyanna - perspective around issues of race, gender, etc is the approach to have when it comes to issues such as these.

DJ - I agree. Part of the development of institutional racism is that most of the injustice that arises is not intentional, but part of the blindness that happens when corporate bodies forget that even in Christian fellowship, we are sinners. I would not say that he was racist or intentional, just blind to the ramifications and underlying assumptions about what he said.

Ken - Yes and no. Complexities of power come into play when it is a White male say things versus say another Asian American. If nothing else there are underlying cultural blind spots and American-centric perspectives that he is showing and for that he should rethink his generalizing. Since he went global in his comments he should understand Asian to Asian interaction in the Philippines, Korea, Japan, etc. While I would agree that is come places - sure white folks are more demonized - but in others NOT being Japanese or Chinese might be also helpful.

In terms of being "responsible" for what other people hear, isn't that the burden that we each hold every time we proclaim the word? Being under a microscope is never fun, but one of the things that we own as preachers. While i do appreciate any preachers prophetic voice, if there are times where that push and challenge might be off-based isn't it also pastoral to rethink and shift or at least to own the fact that words might not have had the intended effect?

Please keep in mind that I don't know him. Didn't hear the comments in the first person. But in the context of a Multicultural event it sounds like a missed opportunity.

DJ - Wow, clearly you have touched on an important area of interest/concern. What a gift you are in bringing together voices that may not otherwise cross.

Actually I have had friends ask me about things they were thinking about saying and I always warn that not matter what, someone will misunderstand their intent. The thing to think about is that they asked because they understood their power and privilege. And not that I represented the "Asian Voice" but iw as able to help them discern whether or not their words were way off or uninformed. If I were to offer Piper some comments, I would encourage him to offer some disclaimers that showed that he had thought of some of the issues. For instance, "I do not fully understand the historical and culture realities of Japanese and Filipino interactions, but . . ." or I would push him to think about whether this was a place for him to venture in the first place. I could have predicted this kind of fallout.

DJ - Looks like a wonderful opportunity. I always feel that as part of "the family" at these events one is given a great change to ask questions that might not be able to be pushed. I would think asking questions that force people to be intentional about their ministry are important. Here are two questions that I would be interested in hearing some response and reflection.

- What does the Postmodern Asian American congregation look like? Is that even a reality?
- Does ethnicity/culture trump political and theological perspectives?
- How how, will, should and/or can mono-cultural congregations transition to be pan-asian or multicultural?

Just a few quick thoughts. Look forward to hearing how it goes.

Jim. Nice post. My two cents would be that transformation of the church will be brought about by that middle group who wants to keep peace, but it is going to the the righteous middle that would define peace as not simply the absence of tension, but peace that allows us to be transformed and not consumed by that tension.
