I remember when you shared with me your ideas at Atlantis Music Conference a while back and now you are up and running and rocking. It's great to get feedback, ideas and people thinking about your new business in the beginning. BY talking about it you can start to avoid pitfalls and learn about the market quicker.

Great post and keep up the awesome work.

Re: The Best Mobile Workplaces for Entrepreneurs

I love Panera's but also like to support the mom and pop coffee shops. As long as there's free wi-fi, a friendly staff and a comfortable environment I can get inspired and work my butt off. It's cool having a local spot too.

Don't forget co-working spaces as well. We have one here in Orlando (Co-Lab) and its a great place to get a cheap desk in downtown (like $10/day or something). The real benefits from co-working are the other people co-working. If you are a designer, you might meet an SEO or a developer, etc.

Great work Matt.

Re: Josh Shipp Used to Get Kicked out of Class for Talking now he Gets Paid to Talk

Josh is an awesome dude and his stuff is addicting. I think about this all the time now. People are giving away their core content in order to get people in the door, not just some crap video or PDF.

In the Internet Marketing space we are seeing people giving away courses that were once $500-2,000 for free to get people into a continuity program.

We are actually doing the same with our next launch. It's an interesting time and I think you need to provide value and build trust before you can ask for money. Once you have that trust though, you can charge just about anything as people are really attracted to what you are doing and want anything that comes from you.

Musicians have a great opportunity to capitalize as well - giving away music in exchange for exclusives, B-sides, concert tickets, clothing or one-on-one time in a membership style site.

Lots of opportunity and honestly there are no rules right now.

Re: Sydney: Unfiltered

Great work with this Sydney. I try and preach to local and indie bands daily that going to Discmakers and blowing a few grand up front for a media format that doesn't sell, may not be their best option. There are unlimited possibilities for small bands to create a great stream of income and see profits form their music. When in the history of music can you write a song, record it, mix and and sell it within the same day at some times. The connection with fans in instant.

In going along with the theme of not signing with a major, why wait for a major to (maybe) put your album out. Record it yourself and put it out on your terms when its ready for you, not the label. Create a buzz and use it to your advantage.

Joell Ortiz, a Hispanic hip-hop artist that recently left Aftermath and Interscope, said that he couldn't wait for the paperwork and nonsense that was delaying his album. He had a buzz and wanted a response now. And he will. Through mixtapes, digital distribution and the like and then he may even decide that the majors that keep leaving him voice mails can leverage him with the extra push that I believe they still have.

Re: TuneCore.com Hooks Up Customers With iTunes Data

That is one of the best features yet. One thing I think a lot of musicians over look is accidental marketing and how to take advantage of it. Obidayah never meant for Hey Ya! to go commercial but once people caught on, he ran with it. The moral is that good content will always get out and spread, you just have to be ready for when it comes.

The teams and the people who are trying and trying to make viral things happen, usually fail because the content is not as good.

I am glad Obidayah is having the opportunity to capitalize on his hard work. I love the idea of the backstage pass. Didn't relaize that you lived across the I-4. We should def grab lunch and a beer someday.

Love your points here. What is even more inspiring is that many do not want the island life, but just a life where they no longer have a boss, TPS reports and the headache of traffic every morning and afternoon. This is the allure of the Internet Business.

The continuity idea is fantastic and is the basis for my lifestyle design. I have 2 sites going up in the next 30 days, both continuity. One to pay the bills and one to try and build into something huge. The great part. I don't need 6,000 - 10,000 a month to live. I only need about 3,000. This means that I only need 100 people paying $30/mo to hit my benchmark. Sounds a lot easier than 600.

Either way, it is possible through hard work and mental toughness. The Internet is not a fly by night business if you want to make it last. Thanks for the inspiring words this morning.

Re: It Is About Lifestyle Design (Part One)

Yup, over in Orlando! Much like the affiliate marketing and info marketing industries needed a reality check, network marketing needs the same. There are some great programs out there and there are also some awful promoters and money hungry reps who will do what it takes to build their downline. I would rather have customers and clients who love me and who I love to work with, not just someone to make that quick buck (like your post yesterday).

Glad to see you writing more often.

Re: 5 Quick Tips on Pitching Angel Investors and Venture Capitalists

These were great things to think about. Also allowing for different versions of the files, custom players, etc. For artists that are moving away from Myspace to do their marketing/fan interaction, Bandcamp offers an amazing solution that is out there for the artists first, not themselves.

Re: What’s Been Keeping Me Up At Night

Glad you are finding ways to let go of certain things in your business. Having a flashy app that gets some press and having a strategy to integrate tools that result in increased sales, higher conversions and new business are 2 separate entities.

Every org and business is going to be different, but how you measure success needs to be defined. What I see for a lot of social biz plans is getting the flash, 24 hour wow (or a write up on Mashable) and saying its a success.

The fre model works if you have a back end sales upgrade process. In Internet Marketing it is one of the most effective strategies. Invite someone to a free webinar or something and upgrade the hell out of them.

The last thing I wanted to mention is that people in the social space are "scared" to ask for a sale. Things like, "you can donate to the blog" or "click our ads to keep our servers running" are just businesses that do not have enough value with their customer base to ask them to pay for a subscription.

Pandora recently rolled out a few paid plans in the last few weeks ranging from $25 a year to $.99 a month and no one barked because their service and value are off the chain.

I guess to sum it, you need to define your own definition of success and do everything in your power to meet that definition.

Re: Reversible business models

As technology becomes more readily available and people become more accostomed to using these technologies, businesses will have to adjust. There is also always going to be the guys who think outside the box and make their revenue by providing a better service at little or no cost to the users in exchange for revenue on the backend.

The Chinese doctor theory is very exciting to hear, although I do not think the U.S. would ever go for it. There are a lot of idea entrepreneurs and not a lot of get in the dirt and start digging entrepreneurs at the college age. I am slightly out of that demo (26) and have found that working with college students they have a lot going on, from school to social life to their friends and family to video games, gym, sports and so on.

Getting the focus down and the I am going to do this attitude will be a challenge.

A more attainable goal would be to prep them for the day they are ready. So when the light bulb goes off and you are ready to put on the boots, you have a blue print of other like minded people in somewhat similar situations.

Re: Social Media Strategy - Aligning Goals and Measurements

Getting your clients or even yourself to narrow your goals and focus is often the most difficult part. They all want to hit Digg's frontpage, go viral on YouTube and get 100 comments per post. The thing I've noticed is the ones who succeed are the ones who have clear cut goals in mind. 100 new uniques/day that convert into 3-5 sales or 10 subscribers or whatever. Or trying to target a specific demographic/niche.

Narrowing your goal into something manageable is key to this whole plan.

Re: YouTube is Losing Hundreds of Millions a Month

As long as it is not obtrusive to my viewing. I love the idea, but no company of YouTube's magnitude has shown me that they can do this without getting in my way. A simple "buy" link that floats to a YouTube branded landing page with related Amazon items might work, in that I wanted to go there. Otherwise I'll just keep clicking my way into 4 hours of life that I can never get back.

Re: Is Your Blog For Rent

It falls immediately to the toilet if the advertisement sucks. Just as with WOMM, it needs to be something worth talking about.

And yes, I agree that we need that 2nd step to push us into buying the product, using the service or whatever.

The quicker an advertiser can get us to make that step the more successful they become and the better ROI they get. Integrating advertising into an existing medium like a blogger's homepage or the iMeem homepage gets you to think and well it got us talking about Coke, even if it was a bonehead move. Now I am in a cafe writing this response and my oh my does a nice cold Coke sound refreshing right now.

Mission accomplished?

Re: Do What Works for You

This article is my exact sales pitch to clients. Lee Cockerell 'Creating Magic' is based on Leadership principles from a life at Disney. One day we were brainstorming and came up with the notion that he knows a lot about top exectuives, leaders and CEO's, but not so much about the young generation and how they are leading today. So we started a site www.creatinggenymagic.com to showcase top young leaders and how they are influencing society. The results have been great. We are 40 or so posts in and got the book up to number 2 on Amazon's Movers and Shakers.

The mentions from all the people we involved in the process helped the message spread exponentially and although we didn't get to NYT Best Seller Status, we were happy with the results.

Re: Keeping Every Fan Happy Through Communication

@Funky J - Great to hear that you learned a little from the post. I agree with both methods and here's a little why I think you need a balance of both.

The big guys (and gals) are trusted in their respective fields. In order to stay relevant they need to continually set the bar. Getting in with them in not only a boost for you but a boost for them as well. The key is to make the approach just as, if not more, valuable to them as it is for you. If you provide them value, be it an idea, a product or post and it works well they are going to keep working with you to make the project smaller.

As for part 2, I think a number of the young blogging set is already seeing the power of reaching out to smaller bloggers. You can see the potential in the writing, in their tone and how they engage with people and with business. It's not so much a risk at this point, but something that helps them grow along with you. We all need that little boost and together we can get there faster.

Carlos - I think you are a super smart dude and I hope you can jump into shoes similar to Seth G - but in your own unique way. We don't need the next MJ - we need the first Lebron. Keep running for it.

Re: Minggl shows future of social networking sites

Neat little tool. While social media/networking may be the hot topic of today, none of the data on these networks is yours. With email, when used properly, you can track, send targeted messages and sell/promote to the list for years to come. When Myspace died recently, how many bands lost fans that they will never again be able to communicate with? Those 20,000 fans are now on Twitter or wherever and you need to start over. If you had all 20,000 on your email list, it doesn't matter what the new tool of the week is.

Communication and consistency is key. This can be accomplished in both mediums but giving up on email is just not a smart long term business move for musicians.

Re: 5 Sources of Inspiration for Gen-Y Parents

@Zaggededge Thanks for checking it out! Being from Orlando, an hour south of Jacksonville, I am going to say that while the climate and beaches are nice in J-Ville, they lack the culture that some of the bigger cities in Florida have. Orlando itself has over 125,000 students and they don't seem to be moving anywhere anytime soon.

But...I am also not vouching for Orlando to be on this list either. We have a long way to grow and progress as well as accept young business. The flashing lights, big advertising budgets and business culture just doesn't seem to be invading us anytime soon and will keep younger folks from getting involved.

Also, NYC, Boston and Chicago - come on young pros, let's get creative and help other cities grow. Look at Madison or Atlanta or Kansas City as places that young entrepreneurs can make a clear impact in and grow, being big fishes in medium ponds. Medium ponds still have a lot of profits to go around!

Re: Top 10 Cities for Young Business People

Yea, I'm not going to run off to MadTown either, but I want young people to see its not all northeast cities that have hot businesses for young folks! What you love (things like music or art or sports) do not always make good career decisions. Knowing what it was that makes you love those things can help impact your career to do something you care about and wake up not dreading your day. For me, I knew I couldn't rap forever, but I loved being in front of the crowd, so naturally leadership qualities and public speaking comes to mind.

You outlined some great first steps and really that's what it boils down to - action. You don't have to start your own business to take action. Just do something - throw your Nike's on, lace em up and go into the world knowing that you are doing something that makes you happy and fulfilled.

Re: For Millennials, 2009 Was A Year of Waiting

It is tough out there for young people, but those that are really putting in the effort and not expecting something unrealistic are seeing great success. The degree is not the most important thing right now. Adding value to whatever you are jumping on board to do is. What can you being hired do to bring value to that organization.

I also think that this time is really important for young people to think about who they are and what they really want to do - and not just collect a paycheck. The opportunity to work lighter hours while living at home gives people that opportunity to build a brand, network their butts off and really find what makes them outstanding.

Young people have a great opportunity to change the working world and I hope that we do by adding value to our positions and having a sense of pride in the work that we do. Or maybe its just me!

Re: Run Your Business from Your iPhone

Great story indeed. I have been using my iPhone for more and more work. I was telling my partner in Rock For Hunger that the next step is to hire a driver so I can work while moving from place to place. That's when I'll really be set.

Re: Indie Music Tech: Introducing Band Metrics

Congrats Duncan. Soundcloud offers a great way to get tracks into the hands of people in a non obtrusive and inviting way. Glad you are showcasing some indie artists on the site too - at the end of the day, that's what all of this is about, helping indie bands!

Re: Indie Music Tech: Guest Post: Do Bands and Musicians Understand What is Happening Online Right Now?

Hey guys, thanks for the comments, feedback, etc. Apologies for the late response, but better late than never.

@ M. Baker - thanks for the introduction to Johnathan Coulton, I'm going to check him out immediately.

@Serve the Song @Barry @Alan @Matthew @Kill the Academy - Thanks guys!

@Heath - I understand your point, but also for bands that are not ready to get on the road, they need to be plugging away at their computer all day, making new fans and branding themselves. Not everything has to be self-promotional. Bands can have personalities and qualities that make them cool people. The bands that I see having the most success on tour are the ones that are sitting on their laptops after soundcheck before the doors open and are talking to fans online, yes its time consuming, but these are the people that are paying your bills and allowing you to do what you love everyday.

I do think you need to sacrifice and make yourselves available these days - we live in a media 24/7 world, look at the president - he's been on Leno, 60 Minutes, YouTube address, ESPN bracketology and countless other appearances all while taking care of the country.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Re: Indie Music Tech: Rock Stars Tool Kit

Thanks Duncan for posting the link to the new tool kit. After putting out the 100 resources, musicians and industry folks were overwhelmed so we wanted to get a scaled down version and also include some hardware and lifestyle/time management tools. Hopefully this is a good fix!

Re: Music + Twitter = Love

The guys from Grooveshark are doing some great things to progress and integrate existing tools and getting music into them. I like the personality you are taking and think the quest is going to be a lot of fun and exploration as you continue to meet people and grow your career.
