in Which Road Will You Take? on Empowering Young Entrepreneurs
Sounds like a grand old time on the 4th. Nothing like being around family, friends and water activities.
Regarding the actual content - I am that guy who gets lost, stuck in worse jams and sometimes a few minutes late by trying the new roads. Traveling different paths sometimes gets you ahead and sometimes puts you behind, but the journey is what matters.

in Keg Stands and Your Career - Episode #2 on Rock the Job
Some more tools we use when talking to students and job seekers include: Spokeo, Whozat and Wink. These all search social networks, photos, videos and the web and allow employers or anyone to not only search by name, but also email, phone number and address. Remember that you are putting all this information on your resume, so the employer has all of that at their disposal.
Good work guys! Looking forward to more!

in Why You Should Forget Your Email List on The Indie Digest
Disagree with you here. While social media/networking may be the hot topic of today, none of the data on these networks is yours. With email, when used properly, you can track, send targeted messages and sell/promote to the list for years to come. When Myspace died recently, how many bands lost fans that they will never again be able to communicate with? Those 20,000 fans are now on Twitter or wherever and you need to start over. If you had all 20,000 on your email list, it doesn't matter what the new tool of the week is.
Communication and consistency is key. This can be accomplished in both mediums but giving up on email is just not a smart long term business move for musicians.

I understand where you coming from, and saying that the data (ie 'friends/followers') on the networks are not yours in the sense that you don't control the list is quite valid. It is a fact that social networks come and go, and we will have to move about from each. The only one that looks to have significant longevity is facebook due to its nature.
Really it comes down to where your (prospective) fans are hanging about. In my experience with the younger generation emails either get lost in a sea of other noise, or are ignored.
As with all advice about the changing industry, read it, understand it. Then decided if it will help you. If your getting thousands of click-throughs from your email list, then it beneficial to maintain it. If you don't have an email list, or have a small one, you may be better off investing your time elsewhere.

in How to Not Fuck Up a Public Launch on Finance Your Freedom
Launches are fun! In the middle of my 2nd for one of my niches. Right at the kick off of ours we got a new very high profile client (so video production for core product is now delayed), our largest affiliate backed out and now I'm on my way to Vegas to create debauchery. If we wait for the perfect time with the perfect plan - we will always be waiting. Taking action and seeing results and making every launch better than the last is the way to go!

Exactly. We should talk sometime, by the way.

in What’s Been Keeping Me Up At Night on Finance Your Freedom
Glad you are finding ways to let go of certain things in your business. As a young entrepreneur, we tend to feel that we can do all things and be all things - hiring someone(s) to take that responsibility off your shoulders can be a blessing or a huge stress factor. I'd love to know how that goes and how the recruitment process grows your business and affects your bottom line.
Anyway, cheers to finding a locale that suits your needs and feels like home.

in Bandcamp 1.0: The best home on the web for your music? on Artists House Music blog
I'm a big fan of band camp - they offer unique ways to present and sell your music - ala Radiohead or NIN. Also allowing for different versions of the files, custom players, etc. For artists that are moving away from Myspace to do their marketing/fan interaction, Bandcamp offers an amazing solution that is out there for the artists first, not themselves.

in Keeping Every Fan Happy Through Communication on Buzzsonic.com
@Funky J - Great to hear that you learned a little from the post. As a sideman you have a great opportunity to alleviate pressure from your bandmates by taking on some extra responsibility in the communication areas. Keep us posted on your communication efforts, we'd love to know how your fans respond.

in Young Entrepreneur Dilemma on MindFrenzy
I think you hit on a few good topics. There are a lot of idea entrepreneurs and not a lot of get in the dirt and start digging entrepreneurs at the college age. I am slightly out of that demo (26) and have found that working with college students they have a lot going on, from school to social life to their friends and family to video games, gym, sports and so on.
Getting the focus down and the I am going to do this attitude will be a challenge.
A more attainable goal would be to prep them for the day they are ready. So when the light bulb goes off and you are ready to put on the boots, you have a blue print of other like minded people in somewhat similar situations.

in Britney Spears and her Twitter Team on Gen-Y Rock Stars
@evolvor - i think that is the key. If Brit can come across as genuine and really tell her side of the story and not have "PR" written all over it, her fans (the people that really matter) will give her that opportunity to succeed once again

in Britney Spears and her Twitter Team on Gen-Y Rock Stars
@Laura - thanks for dropping by. I think you are doing a great job and the way you responded to the initial criticism was a positive step forward towards transparency. I think the more Brit can get her real thoughts and content across the better, and you can play a role of support, both technical and tactical.

in An Interview With Mat Weddle and his “Elihu Project” | Evolvor Media on Evolvor Digital Media Marketing
Eric - great interview. One thing I think a lot of musicians over look is accidental marketing and how to take advantage of it. Obidayah never meant for Hey Ya! to go commercial but once people caught on, he ran with it. The moral is that good content will always get out and spread, you just have to be ready for when it comes.
The teams and the people who are trying and trying to make viral things happen, usually fail because the content is not as good.
I am glad Obidayah is having the opportunity to capitalize on his hard work. I love the idea of the backstage pass. Might have to steal that one!

in Promoting Your Book Online on Chris Brogan
Chris,
We did launch a separate blog for the promotion of one of our clients' books. Lee Cockerell 'Creating Magic' is based on Leadership principles from a life at Disney. One day we were brainstorming and came up with the notion that he knows a lot about top exectuives, leaders and CEO's, but not so much about the young generation and how they are leading today. So we started a site www.creatinggenymagic.com to showcase top young leaders and how they are influencing society. The results have been great. We are 40 or so posts in and got the book up to number 2 on Amazon's Movers and Shakers.
The mentions from all the people we involved in the process helped the message spread exponentially and although we didn't get to NYT Best Seller Status, we were happy with the results.

Thanks for the SEO nod. We have been trying to overtake him! He has some great information, but some of his tactics are a little spammy for my liking. I am a fan of real conversation and growing your audience through passion and great content. It takes time but the payoff is better than Myspace friend botting your way to more plays.

in 2008/09/30/once-more-musicians-fans-will-get-the-shaft/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Artists know they are being screwed but if they want credibility and visibility they need to be where the big dogs are. Unfortunately that means iTunes.
For forward thinking indie musicians, they should realize that they can give their tunes away for free, build website traffic (not to their Myspace page), find sponsors and advertisers and hit the road. That's what we teach at least!

You nailed it. I can't support the service until it supports me, the indie bands, promoters, venues and fans that made the service what it is today.
I can listed to any number of services for better music quality, music discovery ad easier searching.
So yea, good try Myspace, but you dropped the ball.

in Reversible business models on Derek Sivers
As technology becomes more readily available and people become more accostomed to using these technologies, businesses will have to adjust. There is also always going to be the guys who think outside the box and make their revenue by providing a better service at little or no cost to the users in exchange for revenue on the backend.

in No- I Dont Sleep on Chris Brogan
Sleep is over-rated if you are doing what you love. As soon as it becomes too stressful or dreadful, its time for a lifestyle change. Looks like you still love what you do.

Hanging out with the fam is always a blast. Sounds like you are the typical entrepreneur. You hit the head on the nail. By removing our focus on the destination and becoming more present in the journey allows us to live a more fufilled life. I want to connect with you by phone maybe next week. Thanks for the comment G-Ro.
