Personally I just don’t feel I could bring myself to do that autofollow thing - it feels so fake and seems to miss the point.

Re: How to Conduct an Interview with Katie Couric

Hey Todd, you must have been reading my mind! I've been giving interviewing some thought myself recently on my travel blog, as you meet so many interesting folk when travelling. I use it all the time to find photos for my blog & to store my photos so other people can view them and link through to my blog.

I wrote about about some other ways you can use flickr here
http://www.heatheronhertravels.com/12-ways-that...

Re: Get any kind of media into your Wordpress.com Blog

There are lots of great ideas there - I've been thinking of doing something with Google maps - perhaps marking all the places I've written about.

On a similar theme, I wrote about how you can use the Flickr photo hosting site to enhance your blog.
http://www.heatheronhertravels.com/12-ways-that...

Re: How to build interest and excitement about your community Web presence

Hi Todd and Darren

I enjoyed listening to your podcast. I agree with Darren that there are not so many of us UK based Travel bloggers compared to the US. I write about the different places I travel to but in between I blog about interesting things in my home town of Bristol, that a visitor might enjoy but not find in the guidebooks. Many city tourism websites would benefit from expanding to include a community orientated blog.

I predict that blogging and especially Wordpress will become more popularas a tool of self-expression in a younger age group that love Facebook & Bebo. Only the other day I spent half an hour setting up my friend\'s 10 yr old daughter up with a Wordpress.com account and she is now ready to record the things she enjoys. I think Wordpress should be taught in schools along with Excel & Powerpoint.

I agree that we bloggers shouldn\'t be so shy about payment for our hard work, but the thing that makes blogs powerful is their independent voice, which we often worry will be tainted by money. On the other hand PR businesses should realise that they can get plenty of coverage for relatively small sums if they approach it the right way.

Re: Travel Blogging Podcast: a conversation with bloggers about their craft

That was really interesting to hear about Pam and Sheila's interactions with the travel industry. I agree with them that one of the key advantages of blogs is that they are so immediate - you can have a travel experience and write about it the same day. Also that the power of the search engines means that you can write about some Niche topic and people will find what you wrote about it. I often find that I write about some obscure guest house that's not in the guidebooks and people find my blog post about it. At the World Travel Market in London recently I received a lot of blank looks from people who could have seen talking to a blogger as a great PR opportunity. My advice to your readers in the tourism industry is, if a blogger approaches you, seize the opportnity for some free PR!

Re: MuchaCostaRica.Com - Photo Friday: Rock Climbing Gym in Costa Rica

Looks like a good father and sun bonding activity

Re: MuchaCostaRica.Com - Photo Friday: Poas Volcano, Costa Rica

I thought Tungurahua in Ecuador was pretty special, but now I'm realising there are active volcanoes all over South America.

Re: Daily Travel Photo - Bangkok, Thailand

That makes me laugh - it almost looks like they're making a student video. I'm one of these and for me part of the pleasure is the researching what I'd like to see when I'm there.

I use Travel guidebooks (preferrably free from my library) before I go to get an overview and feel for the atmosphere and culture of a place and the main things to see and do when I get there. I will normally also take my guidebook for a quick and easy reference when I get there. Even if they're not completely up to date, they give you an idea of typical opening hours, means of transport etc.

Once I've used the guidebook for my initial research I will also seek out websites, blogs and podcasts that can give me an insider's view of some of the more offbeat or current things to see and do. However, when I'm there I don't normally have time to keep checking things out on the internet when I could be out seeing things.

I could do without a guidebook but I feel I get more out of my trips to have one with me.

Re: Win My Stuff - November 2008 Contest

Hey Gary, your thinly disguised attempt to dominate the blogsphere doesn't fool me! - but I'll have the recycled rice bag if you're passing out the goodies.

You might consider filming your next video direct from the handicraft maker's stall, so you can play on that feel good factor even more. I don't need the 10,000 dong but I'd like to feel I was doing my bit for world poverty, while helping you get your blog to the top of the ratings.

Re: What to Say When You’re Quitting

Have you come across Notes from Spain yet? - there are some great podcasts & language resources - & they are based in Madrid.

http://www.notesfromspain.com/

Re: Making Money While Traveling: The Quick Guide

How about exploring ways you can make or save money from any property you own to support your travelling.

You can rent out your property if you are away for an extended period. Or do a house swap to keep accomodation costs down. Or go and be a house-sitter or house-keeper for someone else - while not actually earning you can make your money go lots further by reducing accomodation costs. Or use a social networking site to find other travellers who can give you free accomodation (you have to be prepared to reciprocate of course).

heatheronhertravelss last blog post..Piggy street art - in Bath

Re: Traveling with Kids, Everyone’s Doing It

It's great to travel when the kids are younger as long as you can slow down a bit to their pace. Once they get to the tweenie & teenage years it's a whole different ball game. My experience is that there's a whole different set of compromises - you need to factor in lots of shopping, swimming pools, internet access, and if you're lucky they might try the local cuisine or begrudgingly visit that art gallery with you.

Nevertheless I persever in the hope that some of the experience will rub off - currently planning visit to Berlin with teenage daughter and friends in tow.

Heatheronhertravelss last blog post..Medieval frescos at Orosei - in Sardinia

Re: Crossing the Border, Guatemala Style

eek!I bet you were glad you'd taken the time to learn some Spanish.

heatheronhertravels´s last blog post..Paperblanks supports Passports with Purpose

Re: The Care and Feeding of Gringos

What a laugh, it's good to see our funny ways through different eyes.

Heathercowper´s last blog post..12 ways that Flickr can enhance your blog

Re: Falling in Love with Travel

Yes but maybe you'll need to decide between that classic gentlemanly Europe or the dark passionate South America, or the hunky outdoorsy Australia or will you have a secret affair with them all?

Heatheronhertravels´s last blog post..Friday photo - the lady at McDonalds in Cusco - in Peru

Re: Carnaval: Proof that Americans are Wimps

Oh to have the stamina to party like an 18 year old again!

Heatheronhertravels´s last blog post..The Amateur Traveler visits Rethymno in Crete

Re: How to Know When You’re On the Wrong Track

I'm the opposite, Christine.
