I do likewise, although I tend to stream this activity throughout my day, probably spending too much time on Twitter.
Why do I do this? It gives me a great sense of what is happening in people's brains that I like, know and trust. When I say "know" if I don't "know" them, my belief set is that one day we'll meet because this keeps happening at industry events and conferences.

I am going to recommend this to my guitar teacher and see how this goes for him. While it expands the potential reach of "experts" my overall concern with sites like these is that it further commoditizes expertise.

My http://www.3screens.net blog has resulted in my recently being in The Wall Street Journal, an appearance on Good Morning America and on Monday, an interview on NPR's Marketplace.
My premise is simple: specific blogs on certain subjects (mine is a consumer facing blog covering AT&T) can be found and covered by leading journalists.
I've been getting lots of press lately on how I managed to reduced my triple play phone bill by 40% and how it's working for others since they are hearing about this in mass media and paying it forward.

Chris, great list, but one thing: behind these platforms you need strategy. You need voice. You need message. You still need basics of PR that bring these disciplines together and help leverage the power of these emerging ways to tell be a great story teller.
Oh, being a good (I mean great) story teller really helps.

in Happy Birthday Laura! on Justin R. Levy
Laura,
Well, we dont go back many years.
And I just met your man via Twitter.
But the reason we are so tight, it that the big man, Mr. Brogan, is my pal, and if you are hanging with Justin, and Justin hangs with Mr. Brogan, then that makes us friends-in-law-via-twitter-via-Jeff Pulver, where I actually met Mr. Brogan. So all this to say is that there is nothing like family. And speaking of family, Passover is coming up in the Spring and so I just needed to know if we are doing Seder at your house, Justin's house or mine. We have plenty of time, but since I live in Texas and ya'all are in Mass., and the economy has gone south, we should really start thinking about airfares and all. Oh- the wedding. I know this is a bit much, but I was asked to give Justin away. I know this is something your Dad is supposed to do for you, but hey, we're family, this is social media, and we're all so totally different, so I am sure you are OK with this- right.
OMG- the wedding.... is Chris playing guitar there? We have not addressed this matter, but I am sure it can be resolved.
Children? Well, I got two of my own, and I think you guys should really hop to it (so to speak) after you are married. I mean, after all, it's not my business to tell you what to do and how to rush into these things, but since we are family and all, well---- I am not getting much younger and I want to see grandchildren.
Well, that does it for now. Many happy returns and of course, looking forward to seeing you and Justin here, there and everywhere.

HI Chris....good points.
Here is what I do:
1. Read the blogger's blog.
2. See if it's a fit and if the blogger we are pitching is focused on the subject and not writing once on the subject.
3. Continue to read the blog for a while and show it to the client.
4. Then I do a short intro. Something like: "Hi Billy-Bob, my client XXX, does XXX and we think this would be a good fit for you because you cover XXX as well. Any chance we could schedule a short call?"
5. That's it. It's no different with industry analysts. Long before the bloggers became a big deal, I pitched analysts the same way.
6. I target the right analysts and bloggers the same way. Treat them like humans, respect the fact that they are really busy and pitched way to much, and think about the long term and not the need to placate the client by thinking that spamming you to death will work.
7. Last of all....you may be a right fit. And your client may have the right thing for you, but sometimes the timing is just not right. So, give it a rest and then circle back to the blogger (or analyst) a few weeks later.

I dont expect people to read everything I write about. Just trying to give people a quick read on what I am doing, what's on my mind, and how I can help them.

in What I Want PR and Marketing Professionals To Know on Chris Brogan
I have turned my blog into an asset for my business, because I blog about my clients. That way, they are tagged. They get found. They are not static. My clients often don't have time to blog, do social media or even think about it. Sure, I encourage to do it and some are starting to, but I am finding my real value add is having them become part of the fabric of my blog.

Hey Robert... dont forget what also makes Israel so unique is that much of its technology comes from spin-offs from the Army/AirForce/Navy. And much of their business training comes from....well, the Army/AirForce/Navy. And finally, there is a very good and very solid Venture Capital infrastructure which mirrors the U.S.

Yup- but the cartoons were better and they were more real.
We had the Flintstones, Mighty Mouse, The Jetsons.
The only thing that comes close are The Simpsons
We also had The Wonderful World of Disney, Davy Crocket, McHale's Navy, Leave it to Beaver.
I am not saying one is better than the other. It's also to let our kids unplug once in a while.

in Give Away Your Best Stuff on Chris Brogan
Chris, I agree - I do give my stuff away, but here's the rub. What if your accountant handed you the IRS tax code and said- here it is, now go do your taxes. Oh- and here's 3 tips to reducing your taxes. Good luck.
It's not that easy. Yes, I give my best stuff away, but I do it to demonstrate my expertise. Also, what works for me on a Tuesday may not work for you on a Wednesday.
So while I am very good at doing what I do, and do give tons of stuff away, I am still in business to run a business.
Look at what you do: you are a master of organizing communities. Sure, I follow your stuff, read your self-improvement habits, but while I may be better than you at PR, you are far better than me at doing community development.
All this to say is that in principle as a matter of good kharma I agree with your idea, but in reality you may be setting false expectations for the seeker of "free."
