in Generosity brings life into the world on GoodWordEditing.com
"But that’s the thing about generosity and good will and kindness. It doesn’t end the despair. It doesn’t destroy death. It doesn’t save the world.
But we don’t have to save the world in a big dramatic way to do something wonderful."
Y'know, Marcus; if more of us thought this way, I think we'd all be more willing to do it. Right or wrong, I think there may always lurk the thought, "But will it really make a difference in the long run?"
In truth, it doesn't matter. It's the heart God sees, not the actions.

in What I Learned from Government - it’s time to stay engaged on GoodWordEditing.com
You make a strong point here, Marcus. Ultimately WE are responsible for who we choose to govern us. And yes, they answer to us. But we DO have to become engaged enough to demand the best from them.
But there are times I despair of the democratic method. Wasn't that how Israel chose Saul to be their king? Because they liked him, not because he was qualified.

'Course, you could always use the "digitize and store" method to manage unruly children during a long trip. (Not to mention certain, er, adults, too.) You know, like V'ger did in ST2. Just read 'em out again when you get there!

Gosh, thanks for the kudos, Derrick! You're right - no income at all, direct or otherwise. It's all about how much fun it is to write, share, learn and of course, teach. "It's about lessons learned from... life!"

Very clever, my friend! I counted 6 of 18 topics - not bad! And congratulations on having the first-ever poetic entry to WILF (sound of crowd cheering)!
'Course, I've never been too good at poetry, so I'm afraid most of it's wasted on me. But I can sure picture those little boogers like black snowflakes, smearing their last moments across the front of my automobile (and my teeth, back in the days when I used to be a happy motorcyclist!)

Marcus, sometimes I wish I knew what you were talking about! Unfortunately I never was into the "classics" that much (never read P&P, for instance).
But if I get your meaning (or is it Randy's), I think I agree. I've read (and seen) many of what I consider great stories with nary an exploding planet in sight (I'm an almost exclusively sci-fi fan).
But I must admit, without some action, it can get a little slow. That's the problem I have with some of A.C. Clarke's later works.

If that's the case, you're not talking about free will, but cause-and-effect. When a choice is still possible, then free will comes into play.

in How Has Blogging Changed Me? on ThrillingHeroics.com
Hey, Cody; I can't believe you didn't forget, what with all you're into! Way to go, my friend!
First of all, congrats on the blog birthday; didn't know we started at the same time (June 22 for me - see that day's post). Isn't it amazing, the body of work you've produced in only a year of blogging? Pretty respectable.
Second, this is a great response to the meme. Very well written, too. Keep up the good work - you're young and have a great future ahead of you (not that I'm old - but you've got at least 25 more years to go than I do).

in Avoiding the Copyright Armageddon on GoodWordEditing.com
So, is it sortof a Damocles' Sword kind of thing? We do the best we can and hope no one decides to sue? I'm filled with questions now (sorry!)
Why is it a violation to print words, but not to say them? In a non-monetized blog, isn't it the same thing? I can see where there might be an issue if I'm making money out of my writing.
Then again, if I were earning money as a speaker, and verbally included someone else's material (like a poem) in my speech, is that copywrite infringement?
I'm so confused!

Hey, I'm no copywriter, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn last night. Oh, wait, that's... something else.
So, does the previous statement violate some copywrite law, rule, or intent? Sometimes it's hard to figure out where exactly the line is. That's why I try to make sure attribution is clear.
But you're right - even with the CC Licenses these days, you can go too far.

Marcus, you did a great job capturing some of those wonderful nuggets from SOBCon. These events make me wish I had digital memory implants - there's just so much good stuff going on!
In the end, though, it's what we take away and successfully assimilate that counts. That's where your nuggets help, so some of the best things don't get forgotten!
Great to meet you - and here's to next year!

in What’s the Value in Creating a Squidoo Lens? on Instigator Blog
I'm glad you chose to be the guinea pig, Ben. I've wondered about Squidoo since I first heard about it from Seth. Wasn't impressed enough then to give it a try, but then at the time I had only been blogging for a few weeks.
I'll be interested to see if it's worth the trouble (and to me, anything that takes longer than 5 minutes to set up is a LOT of trouble). Let's see what it accomplishes before I'll jump in...

conquering king who saves the universe or the superhero who turns back time,
then we must be the normal powerless peon who can't do anything at all. But
heroes don't have to be super. And peons can still have power if we'll only
stick with something long enough.
