in True Love on Kyle Hepp
Sorry for intruding, but I just couldn't help myself and not comment.
This is a lovely post! So filled with love towards your friends, so nostalgic towards your childhood and memories of home. And yet so happy. I can feel your happiness!

Thanks for sharing it and I hope you can go to the wedding and be the official photographer and then share the pictures with us, your audience.

Hugs.

in Overcoming Homesickness While Living Abroad on Kyle Hepp
oh, what a lovely post.
I'm e-mailing it to my husband, who's always like "back in Berkeley people used to..." or "this wouldn't happen in San Francisco" and stuff like that. He has come to idealise so much that I fear if we ever move to San Francisco, he'll be disapointed when he realises things are not perfect there either and then, what will make him happy? longing to be there, or longing to be here?

Better make the best of where you are and move on...

saludos.

in The Definition of Cuico and Flaite on Kyle Hepp
I don't like the word flaite and don't use it, because I think it's "flaite", hahaha. I do put labels on people, though, but try not to do it in regards to their looks as much as to their manners. Someone who gets on the bus for free, or uses curse words in front of seniors or other people's children, or who throws their car at you on the street, that's flaite to me. If I called flaite everyone who dresses with Nike shoes and baggy pants, I'd have to include some relatives and lots of teenagers living in barrios altos. Someone who says "Shile" catches my attention, I'm sorry to say, but I'm trying to broaden my mind in that sense. Many people who speak like that come from small towns in the countryside and may or may not have had poor upbringings. I'm mebarrassed for the very few who feel they are superior just because a hundred years ago their family members were famous presidents, military men or priests. Many of the descendants are immoral, lazy, seriously below-average humans.
Cuico, on the other hand, has been depicted very well. Snobish people who think they are above from everyone else because of their last name, amount of money in the bank and so.

Although, there are rich people who might be considered "flaite" because their manners belong to more uneducated people. And there are the nicest and most decent people living in poor neighborhoods because not everyone is lucky enough to make a lot of money, but that doesn't make them any less good and decent.

Classism and stereotyping in Chile is very cruel, because it stops people with more "indigenous" looks from ascending in the social ladder and because those who don't look European discriminate themselves and prefer to stay away from cuicos and that creates two parallel countries.

It's such a shame that still today such differences exist, considering that many people belong to perfectly nice families and have "dark" skin and unmistakably mapuche faces.

Good column.

There should have been a group post on the subject, was there?

in Turning 25 Equals Death on Kyle Hepp
I too have been thinking a lot about death lately, but only because a lot of people that I've somehow known have died. But I haven't started making any plans, yet.
Anyway, I would tell the professor to get an occupation more useful than finding strange coincidences through statistics.

Oh and Happy Birthday!!! You will soon find that it isn't the date itself that might kill you, but rather the "accumulation" of dates where it's been your birthday.

in Where Would You Take Someone from the Travel Channel? on Kyle Hepp
At the base of Cerro San Cristóbal, entering via Pedro de Valdivia Norte, is a great Chilean-Italian restaurant: Divertimento. It is beautiful, really good, and not very expensive.
It is close to the sculpture park mentioned in the comment above.

Another quite picturesque place to visit is the Mercado Central (metro station Cal Y Canto), but beware of eating raw seafood. And try to keep a low profile or ask S. to go with you.

Good luck!

in Real Life Me on Kyle Hepp
Interesting post. I have also thought about how it would be to meet people who read my blog or whose blog I read.
I'm sure I wouldn't be too much of a surprise, because I bitch a lot in person too and I have published a few pictures of myself. I do feel a bit self-conscious of being shy, which may be the reason why I started a blog: to speak my mind in a different way than verbally, which is not easy for me. That said, I would probably prefer not to meet my readers in person, for fear that they may find me boring!

Got me thinking.

Sorry to read you had a bad day, but as I read on it actually did turn out to be good to have the bird poop on your head. Congratulations on the photographs!
As for bank cards, I've had mine for at least seven years and it's almost completely torn in two, but I look after it like a mother, because I DON'T want to go to the bank and go through all those eternal "trámites" just to have a new one. I prefer to deal with the looks people give me when I use it to pay for stuff.

Happy 18th September!

in Scared You Know What-less on Kyle Hepp
Never mind that idiot "Chileno" (name he does not deserve, by the way): he always speaks dirt about us and magnifies all the bad things in Santiago. I'm guessing someone raped HIM in one of his trips to the hill. Qué león del cerro ni que nada, estúpido.
About you being naive, probably, or probably just misinformed. Any person from Santiago would tell you not to go jogging by yourself after dusk or really early in the morning, for fear of having an impasse like the one you had. More so if you're blonde, dah!

It's common sense; you probably wouldn't jog by yourself at strange hours in Central Park, either.

Sure it's sooo scary to suffer experiences like yours, and I agree that the guy who "helped" you out could have been a little bit more sensitive. He must have been just as scared as you were, plus he must have thought that you were another gringa looking for trouble (if you see the hill is empty, why not turn around and go home?)
