in Cool Cuil! : Republic Of Internets on Republic Of Internets
Where I think it "has potential" is in the fact that they are approaching (and perhaps addressing) the whole notion of search slightly differently than Google. Google ranks and presents the results based on the number of hits/links - the higher the number the further you get up in the result chain.
Cuil on the other hand is trying to implement context to the search query by gouping and presenting the results so that the user can focus on the sub category that addresses their current context.
I was talking about whats "underneath the hood" rather than the UI.
With the web getting bigger I don't think presenting search results based solely on ranking is going to suffice anymore. We need something new.
Here is another post that looks at it from a slightly different angle - i.e leveraging the social graph to determine relevancy in search queries ... http://tinyurl.com/6f9rtk

in 1,000,000,000,000 Unique URL’s but Whose Counting! : Republic Of Internets on Republic Of Internets
Vardaan - maybe the stats are deceiving (we'll give them the benefit of the doubt :) ) However the bigger question is the web is no doubt getting larger (in spite of the Google stats) so the question then is how relevant are the search results ? - Read my post on this topic .. http://tinyurl.com/6f9rtk

Th3g1vr;
You're right - Ignorance can skew views - you included ;) . I wonder how many "average" Joe's and Jane's will want to tweak and hack and jailbreak an iPhone so they can enable video recording? There is a difference between video-recorder capable and actually having it work out of the box. Also I was hoping it would be a core feature rather than a 3rd party implementation - like GPS is. Let the 3rparty developers build apps on top of the core functionality.
However I do agree w/you that it's a software issue rather than hardware.

Dr. Martin - I agree. However if the core framework does not support either voice dialing or video recording we're out of luck as far as 3rd party apps implementing those features.

Good points! It's largely symbolic and I'm pretty sure a little bit of egotism played a role as well - or I should say "bruised ego". I agree - rather than fighting the Sanford Wallaces of the world it's better to focus on securing their systems

Totally agree! I'm not a big fan bloat-ware either but it's lets face it - Microsoft did take the lead where many others failed

Hans - Abosolutely! That's why I feel the NYT should have addressed it from that point of view rather than insinuating that it's only a "bloggers" problem.

I think data portability is what really matters at the end and not which server the content resides IMHO

All I can say is "practice makes perfect" :) Yeah I had a hard time w/it at first. The best thing to do is take it to an open space - I usually fly it on my deck outside or in my drive way so I don't have to dodge the furniture. Thar way you can concentrate on the throttle and practice take offs and landing.

in H-1B Visa Reform Or Fast Track Green Card? : Republic Of Internets on Republic Of Internets
Samiam - You are certainly entitled to your opinion and that's what makes this country great (among other things)!
I do need to respond to a couple of your points tho ...
1) This post was blogged by an American who is concerned about the future of his country and more importantly the future of his kids. However I can certainly understand how and why you arrived at the conclusion that I was just "another Indian trying to justify stealing American jobs".
2) I think the post in a nutshell suggests doing away with the H1B worker visa program. Your point as to "cheap" talent is directed at the H1B program (I think?). Yes some companies do exploit the H1B work visa to bring in talent that is perhaps cheap and not up to par. That's why we shouldn't be concerned about reforming the program nor acquiesce to claims of some corporations to increase the annual quota.
3) Instead we should focus on the long term. I think it's foolish and naive to think that other nations do not produce some of the best talent as well especially in this day and age. My point is why not tap into that talent also and as the posts suggests one way to ensure the quality of talent is to have some kind of points based system during the emigration process.

Thanks for the correction - indeed the expression is "foolproof" (writing in the middle of the night over a few pints will do that to you sometimes ;) )
