in Pearce to Udall: You are ‘breathtakingly liberal’ on The New Mexico Independent
Well, thank goodness Udall is so "breathtakingly liberal."

When it comes to governance and an agenda to benefit an entire state and country, I'd rather have the person who's most concerned for the greater good than for the good of just a few.

in Wilson: Conservative group may cost GOP the NM senate seat on The New Mexico Independent
I'm not sure Wilson is totally correct, but no matter what, I guess those of us who support Udall should write thank-you notes to the "Club for Growth."

As an aside, doesn't that org's name strike you as odd? I thought Republicans, true conservative (in the former meaning before the Religious Right hijacked it) wanted small government?

in Palin pick helps change attitudes toward women on The New Mexico Independent
Actually, Sarah Palin's pick does have the potential to do some good.

I'm no Palin supporter, BUT now that she and the Republican party are screaming "sexism" every time someone asks a legit question, we're finally seeing that the double standard doesn't work if you're the ones who pushed it in the first place.

Has everyone forgotten all the truly snarky -- and dare I say it? "Sexist" -- attacks on Hillary Clinton?

Now the tables are turned and many people can't help but notice the hypocrisy of those who cast the first stones . . .

in TODAY’S TOP STORIES: APS super blasts federal education goals as unrealistic on The New Mexico Independent
I agree that APS has low standards, but I don't think that the standards set by NCLB are either appropriate or productive.

What's the solution? I don't know.

I do know that when people think they can get away with some kind of minimum, that's what most of them are going to strive for.

in CD1: White hits Heinrich again on ‘lobbyist’ issue on The New Mexico Independent
Oh, heaven's to Betsy. Can we please stay on topic? What are the major issues facing our state? What do Heinrich and White propose -- tangibly -- to do about them?

White's attacks smell like they come from the Rove playbook.

Does the local/state media really want to play into this or do you want to be leaders in the country for reporting and focusing on what really matters?

I bet there's enough skulduggery and skeletons in everyone's closets if we dig deep enough.

I am SO sick of name calling rather than issue discussing.

in Stephen Baldwin and religious right put on a show of strength in Albuquerque on The New Mexico Independent
I watch the evangelical television stations from time to time and, lately, there's an incredible upsurge of "celebrities" who've found this version of God.

To me, it's kind of like the form of Buddhism that focuses on chanting for what you want. How can you be detached and still want anything?

How can you be a "good Christian" and spend your time denigrating those who don't agree with you?

I just don't get it.

in McCain campaign’s volley of untruths on The New Mexico Independent
"Untruth?"

There's a more accurate word, Heath: "Lies."

McCain and Palin have been rewriting provable history. They're lying. If it's on purpose, shame on them.

If every one of their lies is a mistake, SHAME ON US and the news media for allowing it to continue.

I'm very glad to read amphikalein comment. It seems to me that any Christian who values the teachings of Jesus would pretty darn mortified right now.

Generosity, love, compassion, charity . . . where are these evident in the current "Christian Right?"

in Conservative religious group hopes to rally supporters in Albuquerque on The New Mexico Independent
"The group’s core principles, according to its Web site, are the sanctity of human life, marriage and family; personal decency and moral integrity; and religious liberty."

Sanctity of human life? Tell me how the Iraq War respects life. How is a war that murders non-Christians -- "a mission from God" as Sarah Palin also asserts -- honoring the sanctity of life?
Marriage and family? Are only Republican adulterers such as John McCain and Cindy McCain forgiven and praised?
Personal decency/moral integrity? Explain to me how John McCain's latest ads mirror these values in any shape or form.
Religious liberty? For whom? I see very little respect for anyone who isn't a Christian in this group.

All this hypocrisy in the name of God. Wow.

in The Associated Press’ sad, new beat on The New Mexico Independent
I think the new AP approach is indicative of what's happening with the media in general. Fewer and fewer people are turning to the "news" to get information. Instead, they rely on the news with a twist -- it needs to come from their particular bias as consumers -- so that our country will end up being even more polarized and less inclined or able to understand diverse viewpoints.

I know I've lost faith in reporting overall and go to both "liberal" blogs and at least three different newspapers before trying to form an opinion.

Fair, balanced, unbiased -- all of these noble words seem to no longer be the main goal.

in The Sarah Palin I knew on The New Mexico Independent
Thanks for this. I've been looking for people who actually know the person behind all the hype and you've given me a small glimpse.

I think the decision was bone-headed, but I'm not McCain's base. Not by a long shot.

in Scribe, examine your biases on The New Mexico Independent
Wow. The AP used to be the gold standard. And now . . .

I look forward to many papers dropping the AP because of its current and blatant bias.

Here's an interesting link about Fournier and his biases. It's from Media Matters and will provide even more context.

in McCain picks Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on The New Mexico Independent
Well, I guess the selection of Gov. Palin will speak volumes to McCain's supporters AND McCain's detractors.

I know I'm very grateful. It crystallizes so many issues and differences between the parties.

However, if Senator McCain is trying to attract disaffected women voters . . . he has done himself no favors with this pick.

Gender isn't the biggest factor for most of these voters. It's a person's record. And in Gov. Palin, these voters will find she's merely a female version of President Bush.

in More Republicans question hiring of Udall’s son-in-law on The New Mexico Independent
Hey, I'm a Democrat and this doesn't look proper to me. I'm not saying to put a Republican in the position; party shouldn't matter, but a tangible family tie just begs claims of impropriety.

Mr. Alpert is exactly correct. True conservativism is admirable -- no matter what your political persuasion.

What we've witnessed for nearly eight years is anything but.
