Without watching the video this think looks like a "back massager" The video they are playing on G4TechTV is awesome. The Revoution has finally entered the building, but has not yet climbed into the ring with the PS3 and the 360.

Yes the engraving is readable. And yes I agree with you on my listening habits also. I can't stop listening to podcasts. Just don't listen to much music for some reason at work. I guess it may have something to do with the level of nerdiness that I have been experiencing. Partially your fault Dan.

Dan. It really was epic for me as well. Thanks for getting me on a boat both days. First time I've been on a boat and not gotten sea sick and first time on a wakeboard. It was awesome. And first time I've sent an email in smoke filled underwear. Via WIFI in California parks.

California bums me out. Other than great friends and weather it's far to expensive of a place to live and plan a family, future etc. Everywhere else is the real world. Any home elsewehere is 50% or less the cost of CA. And bears sh*t in the woods too.

Anyway.

Yeah Ventura median income is lower, but that only seems to help those that bought a house 5+ years ago for $100,000 and have a house payment of $500. You can't even get a loan for a house making around $50K in Ventura, not that you could afford the $3000 house payment anyway. There is a disconnect.

Compare the average house price and income for the avaerage vs. Ventura. And these numbers aren't current. The average house price has climbed much higher.

$477,888 median house price Ventura
$315,413 median house price (average of best places)

$56,319 median income Ventura
$68,092 median income (average of best places)

So people elsewhere are able to make more money and buy a cheaper place. That sure is appealing.

A loan for $550,000 (which will barely get you a condo in VC) for 30 years @ 4% interest will be $3000+ a month and you would have to have an income of $130,390.75 No thanks.

OK. I've been enjoying and benefiting from the polite and dignifed conversation that has been happening on this post for several days. Blogs really shine in discussions like this. I'm glad my wife has join the discussion.

All I have to add is:

There will continue to be complaints of house prices in areas that don't have the jobs/industry to support the people/families that work in said areas. ( a reference back to Kristi's post on firefighters, policemen, etc. who can't afford to live in the county they work)

Areas of greater choice and opportunity/options seem to speak loudly at times like this. I have a decent job in SB and can't even pretend to afford the crappiest place in Ventura. (Mobile homes are $600K in SB, not that I would want to be there anyway.)

Ventura/SB doesn't offer much variety for jobs. None that I know of would pay me enough to afford a home. Even if I ran one of the local companies, without money in the bank, by the time I saved enough for a downpament houses in VC would be $800+. No thanks. At that point I am practically a slave to my employer, like my co-workers (who bought 5+ years ago, a much different time)

It's time to expand. I'm ready to move. To a city like SF, NYC where I can at least have some choices of employers and also work with interesting people. California is a dream that has passed as far as buying anything (and I have low standards.)

I'm also down with some less metro places where I could afford property, but I feel I need to build some value for myself in a place of progressive ideas/technology.

I realize from being here (Ventura) for a year that I didn't hate the city (I lived in LA. for 11 years) but hated LA. I could live in other cities that are much less "me, me and spinners"

Work options and oppurtunities make me feel sane and sleep better. VC needs more industry.

I want to ultimately live and raise a family in a place where the guy that works the deli at Ralph's can afford to buy a house for his family. That is my benchmark for the community I want to live and raise kids. California is quickly beoming a place you must leave to do that. Sad.

Wow. I do need to clarify that I was making 2 points in my post, it was a bit long so maybe it was unclear to some.

2. If I can't find a place like that now, I'm fine to live in a "city" that has more job opportunites and forgo the desire to own a home for a few years until things get more sane or my job experience allows me to get a job that pays me enough to afford a home in a place like Ventura.

And yes I can afford to live in a place like NYC over Ventura. First off I wouldn't live in Manhattan, that is too expensive. I'm not insane. But NYC has much more work opportunites for the skills and experience I have. And these jobs would benefit my career in a huge way. Working in a place where there is limited choices makes employers act cheap. They are the only game in town and they know it. No thanks. I would like more of a healthy and competitive work culture in a town.

I'm not a steel worker so I'm not necessarily looking for more industrial jobs. But I wish this area was trying to attract more companies to be here. Carpinteria kind of does this. But housing costs is a huge problem in this area for employers. It's the main reason people leave my job and the biggest challenge faced at Patagonia, there was a great atricle in the VC Reporter a few weeks ago about Patagonia. They are actually conisdering building apratment buildings for the employees so they can live rent free and save for a home. That is telling indeed of the real problems this type of situation creates.

It's not that I hate it the way it is. I just wish it was different. Ventura is wonderful and was affordable for generations prior to this one. I wish it was different.

I don't mind moves. Me and my wife move well. I will miss the Bridge, but we are also realistic about our situation and making plans for the future that are going to be smart for us long term.

And while I don't think we need another LA or NYC I don't think that would be a bad thing. But what we do need is some more Austins and some San Franciscos 0.5 or 2.0s (1/2 the size and double the size of the current SF area) and some more Portlands and Seattles. More choice of places to live, places that have jobs and affordable housing, and decent school systems. It will happen. It will take 25 - 30 years but this will happen.

The people in these houses must have bought when property was cheap, which it was for years in Ventura, and they are selling and cashing in on a bigger place in VC. Or they are cashing out and retiring at 40 in other states off of the $1,000,000 they made off of a $100,000 investment or inheritance. It's quickly beoming the case that only VPs can afford anything in the county, unless both husband and wife are working at a pretty high level career wise, which is tough to do here.

And yes people are okay with it (people that love the sun or love where the land and water meet, or people that can afford it) but some are not and I am not able to.....and nothing is changing. Except I am getting more clear about my situation.

If the G4 Powerbooks are so lame why do you keep buying them? These intel manchines are going to be serious. I'm ordering a quad G5 Power Mac tomorrow at work. I was suprised that they came out with such a leap for the PowerPC chip. It will take 4 weeks to arrive. I'll post about it then.

oh you convinved me. I was trying to make myself believe it would be good idea to have a decent PC laptop for now while waiting for the intel Powerbooks, but you are right. I have a PC that works fine for me at home so I have both going there. I really don't want a heavy laptop and the ultra compact PC laptops are $2000-$2500. crazy.

It's a 12" ibook or Powerbook for me.

agreed. Or grab a PC DVD burner and slap it in a firewire case and install http://www.patchburn.de/ and you are stoked. The machine sees it as internal and fully supported by Apple. sweet.

You would buy an internal Superdrive and swap it? I love taking machines apart. Didn't know if that is really a cheaper path than getting it from apple.

I am tempted to get a Sidekick but the data plan the phone service is too expensive. I want a QWERTY keyboard, but I'm willing to give up too. Are you going to stay with Cingular?

the Qwerty keyboards on the blackberrys are nice. And having a device that doesn't need a stylus is the only way to go for a smartphone. But $49 for data phone service is too expensive. We need some $19 or $29 a month data plans.

Cingular doesn't have a $20-$25 a month plan for data any more that was in the early days and they are just not raising the rate as a courtesy for existing data customers. New customers are screwed.

you don't need a data plan? I have mine on a usage plan not on a monthly charge plan and it works out very cheap. I just don't use data that much although if I had a Sidekick or a proper QWERTY keyboard on a phone I would use it much more.

wow. that's crazy. Those are some good points you raise. You could just wait until Morgan gets his and we could take it through the paces and see if it sucks.

The battery life would have to be an issue. I bet that is a spec Apple leaves off the Apple site.

S-Video out isn't a huge deal. I added the $19 adapter to my iBook it's fine.

Do you really burn DL? The media is still insanely expensive.

You could wait. 3rd generation is still the best option for any new gear. Someone told me that years ago and it seems to always ring true. Not that I can always wait that long.

51 pages? Mine was only 13. Dude I loved that. It does not qualify as a spoiler although I know some people don't even like hearing about speculation or ideas about LOST. I am not one of those people. The first theory he discusses is something I know a lot about. We will have some fun stuff to talk about. Read the back and forth in the comments, the discussion is great. The guy with the theory keeps it going while answering tons of questions.

Jared posted a trackback right away and commented. It didn't bother me, I just think the people that are having the discussion on his blog aren't regular commenters on mine. I'd rather conversation happen regardless of who's blog. I've enjoyed the comments on Jared's blog on the topic that I think spawned this post from Dan. But if Dan is referring to a larger violation that Jared has committed I am unaware.

I had the same problem when my Wordpress DB disappeared recently and MT fixed it. Here is the email I got from them about the problem:

"This is a common occurence when using the Ensim system to create a database. You can fix this issue by simply renaming the database to something else and then naming it back. Then simply login to your PHPMyAdmin section and you should be able to see it with no problem.

I've done this for you this time as a courtesey, but if it does happen again, those are the steps to fix it yourself! :)"

Hmmm. Not very many features. I like Backpack's to-do's with clickable boxes and all the extra formatting options that BackPack has. This seems very simple. Not really a competitor to Backpack. hmmm. You're drinking the Google kool-aid again.

you are right that my backpack use for futurelevel 2.0 is minimal at best and could be more easiely handled in GN. I am going to spend sometime with it. I'm working on a big project at work and really using BaseCamp for the first time, and liking all the features I'm utilizing in the free version. Don't think Notbook could replace Basecamp. Yes I know my first post focused on backpack, but the features I like are common in both. I'm sure once you show me how you are using Notebook after spending the last 48 hours straight using it I will be impressed with it, just like I was when you showed me Basecamp and Backpack. We are all drinking plenty of coprorate water, just from different streams. I generally like Google's H20.

They let you back on. Congratulations. All the stuff you put up is super easy and you are using the default picture for the item in Ebay for almost everything. It's true, I've taken a long route (all custom photos, custom written text, etc.) I wish all my stuff was up. I'll do the powerbook this weekend and I'll time myself. I use kGTD. www.kinkless.com It is so awesome. I've tried tons of other solutions and I like this one best. It is what I use at work. It integrates with iCal. I get email reminders etc. It's great. Merlin Mann also uses it and has some great tips at www.43folders.com

Awesome. I'm given this show a try too. We watched the 1st episode last night. Downloaded from iTunes. The 640x480 from my iPod now looks better than our digital cable used to look. Crazy. With Netflix anf iTunes who needs cable really? And you can save a ton of cash.

I thought the show looked promising. For a new show to engage me at that level is a good sign. Think it will take a few more episodes to tell where they are going. Pilot episodes are always impressive. Let's see. Have you seen Jericho? Looks interesting too.

I had this same problem lately. Quite a few are sneaking through the filter as well. I went from about 30-40 spams a week to 250 a week in a 10 day time frame. sucks.

I think there is some decrease in RAM performance by not having them installed in pairs. Not sure though. My brother in law is running 3GB in his MBP also. I think it got it set up that way at the Apple store. Not sure what the deal is with that.

I was weaken by this too. $100 off is helpful. Been selling stuff like crazy on Amazon, but still have some hangups with the iPhone, albeit my next phone will be the iPhone. Just trying to put it off until at least generation 2. Ready for the video-out, 16GB, Flash supported, $300 model. Wonder how long we will have to wait? Can't believe my 5gen iPod has still not had a substantial upgrade in 12+ months. Wanna see what the next iPods look like...but still want a stupid iPhone. I'm shocked you've stayed the course on not getting one for this long.

I hear that it will work but it leaves all the 3rd party stuff installed in the flash memory it's just not accessible via the GUI. So you end up losing a ton of space on your phone. A restore might fix it.

That's encouraging. Too bad TLA wants to use pagerank as their main metric. I guess we will see what they do. Traffic should be as big a factor, if not more, than pagerank.

Yeah used Honda prices are a joke. Never a good deal. When we were shopping for a larger car we looked at used CRVs and the prices were silly.

I hope you baby this car and don't hit jumps in it like you did with the Diamante. ;)

And is there a better name for a luxury car than "Diamante"? I think not.
