I crapped when I got my bill in, I was waiting for a 'please explain' from the boss as there was so many pages I was sure it would be an expensive bill.... Luckily for me it wasn't, Optus just listed all the internet connections that were made and that's what made all the extra pages.

It has been a frustration seeing all the down time on Twitter, and yeh I've heard the blame being placed on Ruby but I already had the thought that it's more likely to be the big heavy users.

I'd hate to see limits put on the number of tweets you can send, however I'd love to see some people show a little restraint in what their tweeting. Guess well have to wait and see what happens.

I've found StumbleUpon a pain to use regularly as I predominantly use Safari for browsing and whilst other recommendation sites have been using javascript 'bookmarks' Stumble still had the toolbar, till now..

I'll be interested to see the new web based bar in action, I'd love to see it go more main stream as I have found some brilliant websites when I have used the Firefox Toolbar.

I was under the impression Telstra announced their plans earlier this week when they also announced that they too were delivering on the 11th. It was on a bunch of news sites, though I can't find it on their website.

Anyway, yeh the Optus pricing blows considering the current data available on the Blackberry but I honestly don't think we'll see anything that much better from Vodaphone as they won't need to be that competitive with this junk pricing announced. The other problem with Vodaphone is that their 3G network outside of the big cities is pretty lacking.

I think too often people get into blogging just because of the money, for every person making a lot of money there are probably 2 million people who aren't getting more than 2 - 3c a day. Generally speaking those people only getting into it for the dollars just don't last the distance, you have to really really love your chosen topic and be prepared to do some hard time learning the ropes and dealing with days on end of zero traffic.

Hrmm, that wasn't intended to sound as harsh as it does. Blogging is fun, and enjoyable for me.

It's nice, but not impressive.

I keep seeing consumer and news websites focusing on the price, 'oooh it's $20 bucks cheaper'.. They seem to fail to recognise a number of the flaws in the phone and that ultimately we're still going to have issues because the existing 3G networks are so overloaded with all these new 3G phones that it won't matter if you're using an iPhone, a gPhone, or Nokia, you'll still get call drop outs.

About a week ago I mentioned I was having an issue with mail.app after an os update, a friend replied that maybe telstra was blocking the port and I needed to changing the smtp route, and then the telstra bot re-tweeted the same damn thing at me.. weird as we don't even use telstra and as it turned out it was an issue with our mail server at media temple..

I'm going to give it a month or so of usage, I'll let you know how it goes. I know of a few people who are bringing in 200 unique users a day via their EntreCard advertising, I've never experienced more than 50 a day.

It'll also be interesting to see whether the gaming of the system is policed this time round, hopefully you wont be able to sit there just clicking ads on a single site to earn the credits.

Nice write up, there's a lot of speculation floating around on what the NBN will actually consist of so it's good to have a lot of the detail spelled out in plain english.

It still cracks me up that Telstra haven't officially submitted a tender, just a glorified press release. I work for a medical company who deals with government tenders all the time, essentially if you don't submit your tender you're disqualified straight up, tough shit, next please. Wow! That's pretty awesome, and considering I don't think the NBN is coming any time soon this might actually be a pretty decent option for those of us who want / need the speed.

The 100mbps / 5 mbps with the 100gb is about what I pay now for Foxtel and my broadband, bearing that in mind if we had some decent online television 'hulu' type service in Australia my mind would be made up instantly...assuming it becomes available here in Newcastle.

Apparently Optus are giving us the first month's data free, and unlimited, but we still get it listed on our bill so I'll have a good idea on what data we use at the end of the month still. I think we went on 850mb per iPhone, and I think I will most likely move up a plan from there but it will all depend on how much data the email uses.

I don't have a problem with them wanting to filter out messed up stuff, what I think the problem is is that we'll have it automatically applied to all of our accounts and if you want out you have to tell them. A better way to do it would be to offer it as a service for people to opt in to, so that people who don't want the government telling them what they can and cant look at aren't effected. And what's to stop them filtering out anything comments on websites like 'hey fuck the australian government they're all a pack of fuckers'. If you take away peoples freedom of speech we end up like China or North Korea where you can get imprisoned for speaking out against the government, that's no democracy.

When I moved this website over to my new host, Media Temple, I lost a lot of the linked images so I've had to re-upload all the photos for these blogs. Instead of uploading them to the actual website I figured it was worthwhile uploading them to flickr so that they would be around permanently in the case of another website failure.

From the reports I've had plenty of clicks on the Apple advertising that's over on the right sidebar, but at this stage no sales associated with them.

I wish I could get an iTunes referrer account for here and I'm With The Band as I'm constantly reviewing and referring music to people, but seems Apple get a bit tight with those ones.

Anyway, I'm still an Apple fanboy so I'll be keeping the Apple adverts even though they are zero ROI.

Yeh it's a tough one trying to do a daily type thing for 365 days, I've never managed to do it before myself so this will be a big test. I have a load of polaroid film so hopefully seeing that in the fridge every morning will actually remind us both..haha.. Fingers crossed!

Hahaha, yeh it would be nice to be in the same league as someone like Gordon, but I'm not really good at yelling that loudly, and that regularly!

Hi Peter

Not sure where you're at installation wise, but the above steps should have you in the right direction. I've used them a on couple of different installs and not had a problem.

The driver info for the modem is actually on the EeePC already, you shouldn't have the modem attached till the end steps.

I'll see if I can grab some screencaps and upload them for you to help with this tutorial.

All I can suggest is that you make sure you have all the latest software updates from ASUS, and make sure you're doing Step 3 and selecting the type of connection as a GSM / 3G (UMTS) / HSDPA connection.

I've actually found it pretty easy to make 10 comments on other peoples blogs. My morning RSS list is fairly extensive so there is normally at least 10-15 blog posts that I will sit down and read completely, now I just make sure I comment at the end of them.

Of course this is only the 2nd day of doing it, but hopefully I form a habit this week and it just becomes second nature.

I couldn't agree with you more Vlado.

This is not some 'quick fix' blogging advice it's definitely what you would call longtail as you do need to make friendships and blogging comrades.

If you do make the effort to interact with others they in turn will interact with you, and as in life if you just take it all for granted you quickly find yourself back to no traffic and no comments.

So far I've been finding that it's been relatively easy to comment on 10 articles / blogs a day as I have such a large number of subscriptions in my Google Reader that there's always something to check out.

Thanks for your question, do I think dSLRs are worth the extra price over a point and shoot? Definitely, if you actually need it. For someone who is a casual photographer the Canon EOS 5D mkII is more likely to frustrate you then help your photography.

You're probably better off looking at the Canon PowerShot G10, just announced by Canon last week. I have the G9, as well as a 5D, and it is a brilliant little camera. I'd call it an in-between model, you've got all the convenience of a point n shoot but you also have all of the aperture and shutter control of an slr. Best yet is it only costs about $500 in Australia, so probably around$300 USD.

It's specific cameras for specific jobs really. Your problem is the same as mine, you shoot too many different types of things and unfortunately one camera just doesn't cut it.

Purely a typo and not an 'o' removal.. ;-)

Usability is a huge thing for me, I'm not 100% convinced that a magazine theme is the go, and then on the other side of the equation if you're a 2-3 article-a-day blogger then your content disappears rapidly from the front page and you rapidly become dependent on search engine optimisation which can be so easily gamed by other people that often your original content can be page 2-3 on Google.

Let me know what you think of the theme now that it's live, is the usability still there?

Thanks for the feedback Vlado. I think I will stick with the theme, though I do agree with your comments. I'm part way through adding in a 'Recent Articles' and 'Most Popular' section on the sidebar, hopefully that will make it a little easier to keep track of the new content on the site. Cheers Mat

I think the jar of cream is about 285ml, it's just one of those standard sized ones that we have in Australia, not sure about the rest of the world.

Gordon, trash the dress shoots usually are 2-3 weeks after the wedding, often some time after the honeymoon. They're a massive growing trend in the industry for this sort of thing.. Hasn't fully hit Newcastle yet.

It wasn't too bad, particularly for the guitarists and bass player, however the singer was just going stage left to stage right and there was no lighting outside of him so it was all but black.

Plus their songs last for 2 minutes and they came out and busted out 3 songs in under 10 minutes....rapid fire!

That's the Canon 5D in action there, soon to be 5D mkII fingers crossed.

Lenses I was using mostly the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8, though I did also use the 70-200mm f/2.8 for a few tight crops.

I think I only shot bands at the Cambridge for the first 3 months, then after that I was getting passes for everywhere. Am starting with the Cambo gigs first as they are really keen to get these photos off of me. I will probably start uploading some of the other venues shortly....ie. some time in the next week as the archive is too huge.

Photos are always a hard thing to have display EXACTLY how you want, at least that's been my experience in the past. The other problem is you really need to database them well other wise it's impossible to find anything, that's kind of why I'm combo-ing them up with my flickr account. I get the community advantage of flickr, as well as the massive scale db, and then I can easily host linked images here without killing my bandwidth each month.

Win win.

I like DIY themes, however I haven't really had any experience with their support so I didn't feel confident about recommending them completely.

Have you used them? How have you found them to be?

I saw Brian was going full GPL, interesting move. As a developer license holder for Revolution I think we get full access to the Premium portion of the new set up, but we'll wait and see.

Love to hear your thoughts about DIY / Thesis..

Thanks mate, it's my own fault that the iMac got stolen as I shouldn't have left it in the car.. But I still think it would've been broken into as the red car just up the street was also broken in to.

Not sure whether to replace the iMac or not. Am thinking about a new MacBook or MacBook Pro possibly.

Fortunately it's my 'software only' computer, basically there is no data on it at all except for a handful of songs in iTunes.

If it was my MacPro or the home iMac I'd be pretty pissed about the data, even though I keep a majority of my data on an external hd now.

So now my major problem is that I don't have a computer in the studio now for viewing and editing photos on quickly, and I doubt the wife will let me buy a new one any time soon.

Since I got rid of my credit cards, I only have 3 cards in my 'daily use' wallet so it fits the bill perfectly for me. 4-5 weeks ago when I had like 3 personal credit cards, a work credit card, license, Qantas Club card, Golf Club Membership, and a bunch of other cards, there was no way this wallet would've worked.

I reckon my wife would like that wallet you've got, I'll have to get her to check them out. Thanks!

Actually ended up with about 20 photos in all, it was just one of those nights where it just kept on flashing in front of me.

@kristarella - best thing I've found is to set you exposure to like f/8 or f/11, ISO 100 / 200, and probably 20-30 seconds on your shutter. When I cant be bothered with the remote I use the self timer , set at 2 sec I think, and that way I'm not introducing any camera shake from depressing the shutter.

Don't know how well they would go with Mussels and Oysters, I'd probably try doing a 'flash fry' on the Prosciutto first, but wrapped around chicken tenderloin or a prawn would be awesome.

Might have to try it myself!

Yep, have been considering that angle too. Only problem with it is organising the search re-direct. If landing page links aren't working then I'm not sure how to push people over to a new site till it actually starts receiving it's own search traffic.

Got some real cracking shots of Murray though, lots of passion and strength in his vocals and I reckon it translates across to the photos too.

Of course everyone has the right to protect their intellectual property if they choose to, and of course companies definitely want to protect their income sources, but I think there needs to be a middle ground where companies are still protected but the average 'youtuber' can use music in their videos (as an example). Cue Creative Commons licensing.

I've noticed a lot more artists are licensing different versions of their commercially available music, videos, photos, website designs, etc. under various CC licenses. The only problem currently is weeding out the junk CC from the great CC, also I think the average persons knowledge of how Creative Commons works and how they can and cannot use CC licensed content is lacking.

Hopefully with the continued efforts of people like Jo Ito, Creative Commons knowledge will become a lot more mainstream.

That's a fair bit of tweaking the recipe Nicole, I'm pretty keen on the addition of sweet red peppers to the vegetable mix....maybe even roasted peppers. Might have to write that in to the recipe.

I don't have a problem with them wanting to filter out messed up stuff, what I think the problem is is that we'll have it automatically applied to all of our accounts and if you want out you have to tell them.

A better way to do it would be to offer it as a service for people to opt in to, so that people who don't want the government telling them what they can and cant look at aren't effected.

And what's to stop them filtering out anything comments on websites like 'hey fuck the australian government they're all a pack of fuckers'. If you take away peoples freedom of speech we end up like China or North Korea where you can get imprisoned for speaking out against the government, that's no democracy.

Great article Chris. Off the top of my head I don't think I can add much more a this stage, however I think I will use this as a referral as my boss has talked about business blogging on the company website and it's not something really heavily done in our industry, particularly in Australia.

Unfortunately for a lot of people the 'get a mac' option is not a great option, even though macs are awesome and once you're over the initial shock of the new operating system you will most likely find life online a lot easier.

"Upgrading" to Windows Vista always seems a funny thing to me, personally I consider Vista a big downgrade from Windows XP. You need more RAM (memory) to drive the operating system, I wouldn't even attempt to do it with less than 2gb, and you need a bigger hard disk because the operating system is so bloated with junk you don't use / need.

Another problem a lot of businesses face is the cost of updating their applications to run on Windows Vista, my work has purposely avoided updating to Vista because we have a couple of applications that are used on a daily basis that cannot be run on Vista at all. Also we have the costs associated with training our staff, the difference in time to do tasks while staff are still becoming familiar with the new OS, granted we would have the same issues with Macs.

If someone asked me what they should do, update to Vista or keep running XP, I would tell them to stick with XP for now as there will be a new Windows operating system before you know it...and maybe Microsoft will get it right this time.

I always thought you'd do well with a design similar to www.yoast.com, you've got the personality to carry it....let's face it though, a vast majority of us come here for the content so the design is of little consequence, as long as it's not too distracting or that it makes the content hard to read.

Get a mac, they just work and work and work. I've had macs for the last 4 years and never had an issue hardware or os related...

Browser wise, mate it doesn't matter.. Firefox, Safari and Camino are all equally fast, unless you have a something that will measure nano seconds I doubt you will notice any difference.. I pretty well rock Safari all the time, though I have been playing with Firefox 3 the last couple of days and it's pretty nice..

Good to see you uphold your ethics here Garry, it's always difficult to say no to easy money but in the long run you're better off building your PR organically.

Google's constantly working on their algorithm and it's only a matter of time that these sort of paid text links get dumped hardcore.. People like us will benefit greatly once that happens.

I'm in the same position as you Garry, my blog is in a constant state of flux as I use it for testing code and whatnot for the other websites I manage and design.

One question though, will you RSS still be published in full? I found that depending on how I limited my posts on my frontpage I would also limit my RSS which in turn dropped my subscriber base pretty rapidly, as soon as I went back to serving a full feed it then grew back to where it was prior to the change.
