However, I still wouldn't feel safe in some areas of the world without minimal armament. Remember, a ship is its own capsule of sovereignty and has to protect itself as such.

Re: Admiralty Tidbit - Law of General Average | gCaptain.com

Today, General Average (GA) is more commonly used to share the expense of a ship's delay.
If cargo or property is insured against partial loss that may arise from a particular hazard, particular average is used instead of general average.

Re: Activists Held Hostage By Whalers | gCaptain.com

Tim, I think that Fred is right about the duty of care owed to these guys - it is the same as the duty owed to a stowaway. I don't think that there is one set of laws that will govern their rights, but if there is, then the flag state's laws are the most persuasive. If the flag state has ratified a treaty that addresses their rights, then that would certainly be binding as well.
UK and Aussi laws probably won't play a part in determining their rights, especially if the vessel doesn't ever call to a port in or have connections with either country.

Re: A Message For Barack Obama: Welcome Aboard!

Excellent logo and well written entry. I'm eager to get to work on the maritime policies that will bring global commerce back on track. I'm thrilled that the United States has an administration that believes that American mariners can be a part of those policies.

Re: A Message For Barack Obama: Welcome Aboard!

Excellent logo and well written entry.
