I feel the same way...I've really enjoyed it, but I always hesitate to bring it up because of the perceived "tawdry" aspect. Some of them are amazing and are deservedly treasured--I think of things like the Book of Kells in Dublin, and various other illuminated manuscripts especially. But somehow that doesn't translate over for me into printed books. I mean, I acknowledge that early printing was also time-consuming and difficult on the typesetters and all. But I don't get why the first printed edition of a work, for example, is so great, while the second edition (which could have been printed, like, two years later) is much less valuable. It's this obsession with first printed editions for their own sake that mystifies me.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Las cucarachas

Well, I'm sure you could "hit" them with Black Flag. Yeah, the different factions were definitely trying to strengthen their position by accusing the others of being extremists in whatever direction (all Calvinists were labeled Puritans, all those in favor of high church liturgy were papists...). Herbert died in 1633, which was the same year that William Laud became Archbishop of Canterbury, really bringing Arminianism in as the main Anglican theology, I think. The English Reformation is so interesting. Confusing as anything, but interesting.

Hee. Remember the Milk isn't as good as calendar-type stuff as 30boxes probably is (I haven't tested it extensively). I tend to use Google Calender when I need an actual calendar. I like RtM's todo lists, though. They're pretty flexible.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » December Reading/Watching Recap

Well, my spreadsheet where I record all the films I watch says I saw The Glass Key in 1997, and I apparently liked it. But I don't remember it at all. I suppose I should rewatch it. Based on a Hammett book, isn't it?

Oh, please. I love comments. :p I'm not hugely into graphic novels, but I've read most of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and some of Watchmen and really enjoyed them...I think the library didn't have the next volume or something, and I wasn't quite willing to go buy them. You're right on with "V". It's a good story, but the film at least paints V as a hero, a liberator, and a martyr, with very little suggestion that he could be wrong in his methods if not in his intentions. I would've liked a little more ambiguity coming from the story itself, not only from my own reactions to it, if that makes sense.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Australian Idol

Yeah, I assumed ours would be better, too. I originally wanted to watch Aussie Idol because of the accents. :) But then I got hooked. Damien...*sigh* I just hope they release his CD here, or I can get an import or something.

I was able to watch it due to the power of the internets. Somebody in Australia uploaded it as a bittorrent file (the file-sharing mechanism of choice for TV shows), and I have one of the torrent sites notify me when new ones come up, and it came up, and I thought, hey, interesting. Basically, it's an illegal download, but I can't see how international attention to their singers could be a bad thing...I mean, I already know I would buy at least three or four of these guys' albums if amazon.com will import them for me.

There are Idol shows for nearly every country now, but I have been less successful at ferreting downloads of the other ones--I've found NZ Idol (not as good, as I've said) and some Canadian Idol (which I haven't actively pursued), but nothing else. I'd like to try Indian Idol, just because Hindi music is cool. ;)

The weather is troubling me only insofar as it's kept me from going down to Austin this weekend. I was nearly ready to go today, because it's just cloudy here, but the forecast is for freezing rain tonight, and I didn't want to be driving back in that. Is it icy down there?

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » American Idol 6×01: Minneapolis Auditions

Jennifer, it is FREEZING here. I kid you not. Freezing rain and all. People keep telling me I'm a wimp, being from St. Louis and complaining about a little bad weather--but that's why I moved from St. Louis! Hee.

Anyway. Yeah, I used to mock Idol-watchers, too. Then when I started watching, I mocked myself. Now I just don't care. I love show, and I'm getting less ashamed of it every day. ;) Usually there are more good ones than there were tonight, though. Minneapolis was truly terrible. Still, they do tend to concentrate on the bad auditions.

I vaguely know who Kate Smith is. I've heard the name, and I think I've seen and heard her, but I couldn't swear I have. There were a bunch of screamers tonight, though. Honestly.

Yeah, I really liked gravelly-voiced teen boy. Loved his personality and his willingness to go learn the ABBA song, but then he sang it JUST THE SAME! I almost wish they'd let him go through, because he did have a point about the vocal coaches in Hollywood. Might've helped a lot.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » American Idol 6×01: Minneapolis Auditions

Debbie, this is why I don't watch the news. :D Also, it's boring, but repeating clips of stuff I've already seen over and over is the other reason (actually, that's boring, too...). Almost everyone was horrible tonight. I thought they were only showing the horrible auditions, but they actually only let seventeen through! Made me really glad I'm not one of the judges.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » American Idol 6×01: Minneapolis Auditions

Debbie, yeah, sometimes Simon gets too caught up on image, I think. He's trying to sell a "whole package," though...he's looking for someone with voice+personality+looks. But it is annoying at times. I'm hoping that they just showed all the gimmicky ones, and that it's not really as high as percentage of total auditioners as it seems. They've got to come up with better people than this though, or the competition part of the show's going to be utter crap.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » American Idol 6×03: Memphis Auditions

Dad, hee. This was probably the worst audition show I've seen. Yes, they are screened before they go to the judges, and the screeners let through any people who might be good singers as well as any who might have entertainment value. Apparently Timika was one of the second group. Usually there are a lot more crazy delusional people, though...last night was mostly just mediocre.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » American Idol 6×03: Memphis Auditions

Yeah, I might've missed when they said how many they sent through. I sort of zoned out for a few seconds near the end. And I do not know how many auditioners the pre-screeners listen to. I just know that the judges only hear a selection of the how ever many thousand people show up. And of course, we only see a fraction of the ones the judges see.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » American Idol 6×04: New York Auditions

I liked Antonella, too. It's so refreshing to see someone come into the auditions without attitude and demur to the talent of others...even after Amanda left the room! See, I think this is why I'm ready for the competition already...I've already picked five or six people I like a good bit, and I'm impatient to know if they make it past Hollywood.

Really? It surprises me that they'd let anyone who had gotten to the public-voting stage return. But then, it really is the top twelve that matters, so I suppose I could see that.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » American Idol 6×04: New York Auditions

Nope, public votes on top 24. I agree with everything you've said. And if these classes were 3 hours out of 120, like required classes that I wasn't terribly excited about as an undergrad, I wouldn't have a problem at all. But they're 3 hours out of thirty. Each class is 10% of the whole program, and with every semester that ticks by without any offerings I'm really interested in, I wonder why I'm getting this degree at all, especially now that I've decided I don't want the job it's preparing me for. I had classes as an undergrad that I didn't like, but they were sandwiched in among a greater number that I did. Now I'm looking at another year of classes with the looming possibility of having liked two or three out of twelve, and having graduated with a degree I won't use not having learned anything I wanted to know. I'm sorry, I'm in a really negative mood today...feel like I picked the wrong school, the wrong program, the wrong everything.

Hee. I saw that John Bunyan post. I have to pick two. I think I'm probably going to do the Contemporary American and the Victorian Poetry. And on the good side, I'm finding out that a lot of professors don't mind you sitting in on their classes, so I may find some undergrad classes that have interesting content, to keep myself from going nuts. I'm feeling a bit better about the whole thing now (hanging out with other grad students tonight helped me remember that I'm here for the community as well, and that part's great).

Thanks for showing up over here! I don't want to change the document. I want to annotate it. Which doesn't involve changing it, just adding an overlay of my own marks and notes. I know you're not a Microsoft person, but I've used Microsoft Reader for ebooks a bit, and you can highlight, add notes, bookmarks, all sorts of things, and they're saved in a separate folder, but associated with the document you're annotating (so you see them when you look at the ebook, but they aren't actually a part of it). This is so much better than the pure static PDF that you can't do anything but read, and I don't understand why PDFs, since they're so standard and ubiquitous, don't have this sort of functionality.

Thanks for the point about photocopies and OCR. I guess it probably goes on a journal-by-journal basis whether they use text-based or photo-based PDFs. I've been getting behind on several of my other shows, even my baby Veronica Mars. I'm just trying extra hard to stay on top of Idol!

I'm pretty pleased with the Top 24, too...I like that there aren't really too many people that you can easily categorize. Like, last year you had Chris the rocker, Kellie the country girl, Bucky the country rocker, but you don't really have that this year. They're diverse, but not as pigeon-hole-able. Rudy and Phil I don't think will go too far. I like Phil's personality a lot, but I'm not that into his singing.

re: Paul, yeah, but a lot of the time "lucky underwear" things include not washing them, even if you only wear them certain times. I was just hoping he didn't think that not washing was part of the luck. That's all.

Top 5...yeah, hard. Ask me on Thursday, after I've had a chance to hear them all sing. And yes, you're totally right. It's unfair not to show all the auditions. They should AT THE VERY LEAST put them on the website. They do have interview clips with the Top 24, so you can sort of get a sense of their personalities and influences, but it's not the same thing. Compared with, say, how they've showcased Antonella--don't get me wrong, I love her, but one of the reasons I love her is because I've seen so much of her. I saw how self-effacing she was at the original audition, how supportive of Amanda (who was sort of a bitca at times), and how well she came through the horrible group round compared with Amanda and Baylie. Season 5 was my first year watching regularly, so I keep thinking that it's just not going to be the same without Chris and Kat and Elliott...but then I remind myself that the first week of competition, I didn't care too much for Chris or Elliott, and I didn't even remember Kat's audition. So I think it's just that we don't know them yet.

I've been watching American Idol Rewind, where they're replaying S1, but recut a bit. And S1 was SOOOO BAD! Seriously. Production value was nil. Although, they haven't gotten to the finalists yet, so maybe it'll get better after that. And most of the singers aren't great, either. It's come a long way.

You're very welcome! I wanted to keep really good track of the auditions this year so that I would be able to remember everyone and everything they did on the show.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » American Idol: Top 12 Guys

Yeah, I nearly put Chris Sligh on there. I just didn't care for the song--I know I shouldn't really consider that, but... And aw. I like Sanjaya. It breaks me every time.

And I don't dislike Meredith...I just don't love her. But, yeah, I don't care for McDreamy too much. He's done too much to hurt my wonderful Addison. I liked Callie in last night's ep. They're getting some good interaction going between her, George, and Izzie. I won't say more than that, since you haven't watched it yet.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Grey’s Anatomy (spoilers) & The Office (not really spoilers)

Yeah, I mean, I was pretty sure Meredith wasn't going to die. The dead-voice-over territory is already taken by Desperate Housewives. ;) But as far as character development went (not only Meredith's, but also Cristina's and Derek's), it was quite well done, I thought. And Denny was there! I love Denny. I watched ER for about a season or two somewhere in the middle--um, right when Maura Tierney started on it. Right now they're all singing variations on Motown/R&B;/Diva songs. Gina might be able to get away with moving toward rock (and away from powerhouse-diva songs), but rock chicks tend to fail quickly, so maybe she's right not to do that.

Yeah, that's true. Stephanie is younger than she seems (not meaning that to be a value judgment, either way). I do like her, she just doesn't WOW me. Well, Melinda has impressed me from her first audition, and singing Aretha Franklin and Frank Sinatra songs well generally gets on my good side quickly. ;) I agree with you, though, that Simon needs to quit with the "everyone else has an ego, you don't blah blah blah" line. He's run that into the ground, however true it is.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » American Idol Top 10 Girls

Mark - because I'm behind. My cable provider decided to suddenly stop carrying the CW, so I've had to start downloading the episodes again, and I tend to get behind when I do that. I believe I'm three episodes behind right now.

I think the last episode I watched was the one where the one girl was given RU-486. I know there was some huge kerfluffle in the fandom after last week's episode, but I have no idea what happened, or why everyone was upset about it, so please don't tell me. I'll get caught up next week probably, after I finish a paper for next Wednesday.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » American Idol - Top 20 Becomes Top 16

That's a very good point. Reverse psychology and all. And re: Leslie, exactly. There are at least six or seven better voices, probably, but she was different, and I enjoy having something different on the show. I'm concerned that we're going to get to the final six girls, and they're all going to be Motown-inflected power belters, which is a very real possibility right now. Not saying they're not great, but just...similar style.

Sanjaya and Antonella are likely to be the VotefortheWorst choices next week, and I think the site has enough supporters that it may actually be affecting the results. There were no novels in ancient Greece, so therefore they must be some upstart sort of bastard form, thus they were inherently inferior to the high art of epic and tragic poetry.

There was also the moral concern, as Dabney argues (like here; thanks for suggesting I search for that, it's interesting! And sort of funny, though he obviously didn't think it was...), which I guess stemmed, again, from the Romantic influence which tended toward horrific and titillating narratives and sentimentality rather than edifying morality. The morality issue is important to neoclassicists like Voltaire really only from a position of manners and social acceptability. Voltaire, after all, epitome of the athiest. (Reading further in the Dabney piece, he sounds like a consummate neoclassicist, just with a more religious bent than usual.)

Your comparison to television is a really good one, though I suspect it's a high art/low art distinction more than a technological one (except insofar as technological advances helped make low art easier to produce, just at it did high art). I guess I just see technology as a means rather than a cause.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Voltaire on Homer

Tineke, yeah, I got stifled by only having one sidebar. I'm in no way wanting her to actually win, but I want very badly for her to be there longer than Sanjaya, at least. ;) I'm voting for her now as an underdog. When it comes closer to the finals, I'll be switching to Melinda or Blake or Chris R. Like, we watched some of Dames, because it's a good example of the early 1930s Warner Bros. musicals choreographed by Busby Berkeley (not as good as 42nd Street or Gold Diggers of 1933, but I digress), but he just started it at the beginning and left it running straight through until the end of class...yet all the important bits (i.e., the Busby Berkeley-choreographed musical numbers) are at the end! Sorry, I'm still bitter over that bit of mis-preparation. I could've taught that class better when I took it at age 17.

But yeah, DVDs that go with the books are helpful. It's slapsticky and somewhat absurdist, with a good chunk of over-the-top violence in the vein of Simon Pegg's earlier film Shaun of the Dead. And self-referential humor like Pegg's TV series Spaced, but that hasn't been shown here in the States to my knowledge, so you may not be familiar with it.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » American Idol Top 6…Again - Bon Jovi

Mark and Jennifer - I wondered if you two were fighting over the computer or something to post so close together. What is Quiet Riot? Some band I'm too young to know about? :p Jenn, Jordin? Tonight was probably her worst performance yet, but I think it pales in significance compared with her many outstanding ones... I suspect that Chris will go tomorrow, too. I like him, but he hasn't upped his game to match some of the other contestants.

Nicole - Well, I am getting so biased against Phil that I hardly hear him singing anymore. Bad I know, but there it is. He did do a good job on the country night, though, for sure. Tonight, though...just felt weak to me, and I mostly agreed with Simon. I'd be happy with either Jordin or Melinda winning--I lean toward Jordin only because I think Melinda's career will be just fine whether or not she wins, and Jordin, being inexperienced, could probably use the boost.

Becky - BLAKE!!!

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » American Idol 6 Become 4

Oh, geez, I hope not. And yeah, like I said, I don't remember the details of the story that well (it's seriously probably been ten or twelve years since I read it). Why is there popular demand for censorship? That just doesn't make any sense to me--hence why I need to reread. If no one is reading books, why wouldn't they die out naturally, and why would people braindead through television care if anyone else was reading books?

I love your test analogy...that's a perfect way to define the difference between intention and what's actually on the page. It took me all day to put the list together. ;)

I like My Fair Lady, but it's just...there are at least six or seven better George Cukor films, there are at least five or six better Audrey Hepburn films (though I'll grant you it's Rex Harrison's best film, but he wasn't in that many great ones), the Broadway version of the soundtrack is much better, and it's just...bloated. That doesn't mean it's not enjoyable or anything, but it always strikes me more as an example of the 1960s tendency to overblow its musicals than as a great example of the musical genre. But that's my opinion.

And yeah, Toy Story is great. Toy Story 2 is better though, if you're talking pure quality, and if I were picking the best Pixar film, I'd go with Monster Inc. But Toy Story is more important historically, which is why it's probably on the list.

Re: Sophie's Choice, really? Meryl Streep won an Oscar for it, I know that...is it just, like, really depressing? I know enough of the story to think it might be rather depressing.

Hee...I think Blade Runner was one of the first sci-fi movies I ever saw, and I just didn't get it, especially since whatever I knew of more modern special effects skewed my view of it. But I keep hearing so much good about it that I really want to watch it again.

The SYTYCD recap will be up soon. I've got videos this time! The point is that I enjoy movies more if I like the actors and if they do a good job portraying their characters, and if their characters are well-written enough to support a quality portrayal. I already like Nicole Kidman from several films, notably The Hours and Dogville, but also Far and Away, Moulin Rouge, The Others, To Die For, etc. In other words, I'm already a fan of hers and am predisposed to like her, so it makes me happy when she chooses roles that are well-written and play to her strengths as an actress rather than to her weaknesses. She's an uneven actress, so I'm never sure if she's going to do a good job or not--I'm merely saying that Margot at the Wedding looks like the type of film in which she traditionally does well, and I'm pleased that the director seems to have brought out the side of her that I like.

It's not about the film making me like her--I already like her. It's about the film living up to that like.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » April 2007 Reading/Watching Recap

Holly! I must admit that I'm not as familiar with most of the New Wave directors as yourself (I just flipped over and read through some of your entries), so I can't really judge whether Godard's interest in "low-art" American films was genuine. My reason for thinking that the New Wave in general was fascinated with American genre film is the amount of time that the Cahier du Cinema writers who became New Wave directors spent showing its value. I always find it fascinating that the writers who championed what most critics thought to be throw-away B movies ended up making, essentially, art films...perhaps Tarantino is merely reversing the tendency? (Also, I tend to think Tarantino is pretty nerdy, but I also don't consider that a bad thing.)

As far as seeing it as specifically Postmodern, I tend to find more connections than dissonances between Modernism and Postmodernism (for example, Godard's play with audio and soundtrack in Band of Outsiders and A Woman is a Woman could be considered an extension of Modernist experimentation with language), but the high-art/low-art divide is a definite difference, as is the appropriation of other disparate works from all sorts of sources (filmic, literary, musical, artistic). One book I skimmed the other day suggested that if the slogan of Modernism was "Make it new," the slogan of Postmodernism is "Make it used." I think that's too simple, but it's at least easy to remember.

What would you say are the elements that make Godard (and Rivette, but I haven't seen any Rivette films) Postmodern? I think I would categorize Resnais as Postmodern, but I'd need to rewatch his films with the question in mind. The others, yeah, I don't know. I'm not sure that every filmmaker (or every writer) can be classified as either Modernist or Postmodernist; somehow the labels are more than just artistic schools, but they're also not all-encompassing. And as you've said, the line is hazy, because the definitions are hazy--which I hope is going to make the paper I'm writing interesting rather than muddled. ;)

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » So You Think You Can Dance Top 20

Well, Photobucket is more of a repository of photos and now video--more with the storing, less with the social aspect. So, I mean, you can go searching for clips on Photobucket, but they aren't as prominently displayed or linked together as on YouTube--plus I named these with the intent of making them difficult to find. ;) I've had gigabytes worth of screencaps that technically violate copyright on Photobucket for years, and I've never heard anything. I know, I'm actually way more hooked on SYTYCD right now than I was on American Idol this year. I might actually post sometime on why SYTYCD is better than AI. Wade better be choreographing next week! I really missed his routines. On the other hand, it was sort of nice to have a third judge who actually knew the dancers and was willing to be critical; usually the guest judges are all happy happy all the time and basically worthless for constructive criticism.

Yeah, I might have to start voting next week myself. ;) I actually did last night, but it didn't help Anya and Danny out much apparently. Guess I should've thrown all my votes their way instead of sending some to Lacey and Kameron.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » So You Think You Can Dance Top 12

Jennifer, I'm sorry you haven't been able to watch it live! It's probably a commentary on the non-existence of my life that it's pretty much the highlight of my week. ;) I'm glad my commentary is helpful to someone. Even though I'd probably write it anyway, because I like to see myself write. Heh.

I haven't watched anything on the Food Network; I'm not much for cooking or anything. Also, did most people like X2 better than X-Men? I liked first one a lot more, but then, maybe people who'd read the comics got more out of the second one than I did (since I haven't read the comics).

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Whatever Happened to Deanna Durbin?

Ed, that's great! Almost all of her routines are among my favorites. I didn't care too much for the paso doble, but that was just because I couldn't get my mind around doing paso doble to "We Will Rock You." I thought she and Jesus did a great job dancing it. But yeah, those others were all INCREDIBLE. As opposed to Lauren, who has had maybe one or two fairly good numbers and LOTS of mediocre-to-bad ones.

I have no idea who's voting for her. I liked Lauren all right in the beginning, but now that she's knocked out both Anya and Sara, she's completely worn out her welcome. I'M SO UPSET. STILL.

Also, hi! I'm glad to see you here! I saw a comment from "Rach" in my inbox, and I was like, ooh, I hope that's who I think it is! And it was. :)

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Disappearing iTunes

Eric! I'm glad you're finding my blog interesting. ;) I've been really lax about updating it the last week or two--why is it I post less when I have more time? Weird. Blog = procrastination tool, apparently.

I LOVED Hannah and Her Sisters. I liked The Shining a lot, too, but in a different way. Definitely, though, put Hannah in that list of top five Woody Allen films I sent you. I just got back from seeing Once at the theatre--it won't come to Waco, but you should rent it when it comes out on DVD, if you can. It made me happy and sad all at the same time, in a good way. I haven't watched Zodiac yet, but probably will next week. My monthly review posts are a couple of months behind, though, as you probably noticed--I'm trying to get those caught up next week, but I don't know how successful I'm going to be. ;) Do you have a blog where I can read all your thoughts about film and other stuff? You should. :p

Before Sunset disappointed me a little when I first saw it (have we already discussed these films? I forget), because I had just seen Before Sunrise the previous day and loved it, and Sunset was so much more...yeah...emotionally brutal, I guess. Raw. I just wasn't ready for it; I'd like to see them again so I can accept Sunset for what it is, not what I wanted it to be.

Did you see Bourne Ultimatum? I saw that this week, too, and thought it really good--we were talking about smart action flicks, and I think the Bourne series counts, certainly more so than any other trilogy I know. I can't remember if I ever saw Rush Hour 2...I think I did. I'll probably check out 3 on DVD. ;)

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » So You Think You Can Dance Top 6 and Top 4

I download them from the internets (via bittorrent tracker site mininova.org), where kind Australian people upload them after they air in Australia. I found both of their finales last year disappointing, but that doesn't mean I'm any the less excited for their premieres this year! Probably later this week I'll be posting about what shows I'm going to try to watch this year, time and scheduling permitting, and I hesitate to admit how long the list is! It's ridiculous, really. Really, I think people get too caught up in trying to make films like The Fountain (or David Lynch's films) make ordinary logical sense; trying to understand how every bit fits. I don't think that's always helpful; The Fountain makes sense, and like you say, I think the past and future stories are ways of dealing with death, but it's not cut-and-dried, and you can't understand it the same way you can understand a math problem. It uses a different sort of logic--an emotional, thematic logic rather than a cognitive, narrative logic.

I haven't reviewed Le petit soldat yet. I don't even know what I'm going to say. I didn't really like it very much, and had severe difficulty keeping my attention on it (I even tried watching it twice). I liked certain scenes, but I couldn't get a grip on it as a whole--which may be a reflection of my almost complete lack of knowledge of the Algerian conflict.

Well, I still can't get The Naked Kiss out of my mind, and I saw it months ago. But Shock Corridor just...wasn't shocking. And I wanted it to be. Still, Fuller's definitely got his own sensibility that's unlike anyone else's I've seen, so while you may be right about Godard and the others, I can see why they'd consider him more than just a craftsman. Not sure he fits with Truffaut's original idea of an auteur, but I'm not sure I fully understand his formulation anyway.

Re: Good German, really? I didn't know that. Thanks, I'll have to seek out Zentropa and keep that in mind. Maybe it'll call for a revaluation of Good German, even.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Fall TV Planning

When I was over there (in England, not Scotland; I wonder if that makes a difference to the TV?), they started most of the shows in the spring. So the season of Buffy that started in the fall in the US started in January in England. I dunno if that's still the case, or if that was true of other shows as well as Buffy... So, basically, yeah. This was an unhelpful comment! :)

And I know, right? Good vampire, kinda broody, private investigator, falls in love with a mortal girl.... I don't know whether that's too much need for procrastination or not enough. Probably not enough. Anyway, I rarely feel competent enough to do game reviews because I often don't finish games at all. I like playing them, but if I get stuck, I'm more likely to change to a new one than work my way through the difficult part. But I can do a "here's some games I loved playing" post if you'd like some recs.

And yeah, but the PS3 also costs $250 more than the 360, and doesn't have as many good exclusives (unless you're an RPG fan--I'm an FPS fan, and there are more FPSes on Xbox), and doesn't have as good graphics. The PS3 is loads better graphically than the PS2, but the Xbox still wins. Plus, plus, the 360 acts as a media center, and I don't know if the PS3 does that (and the 360 may not work with Macs).

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » My Brain is Balanced…

:p I could've told you that you were probably left-brain dominant. But it was internet friends who pushed me toward the indie rock side of things--which is good, because I can actually afford concerts for indie artists, while I can't for mainstream ones.

It's fun being able to surprise people! Especially you, since you probably knew me better than anyone. If you did go to rock concerts, who would you be going to?

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Music Monday - Rilo Kiley In Concert Edition

I'm glad you like RK! They're the sort of band that grows on you, too--I had various songs of theirs sitting around on my computer for a couple of years, probably, before I went past "yeah, they're pretty good" to "wow, they're one of my favorite bands ever and I must see them in concert!" And it wasn't like I heard new songs that I liked better; it just took a while to learn to appreciate the ones I already had.

I have a friend who's supposed to be getting me the middle two CDs, which I only have bits and pieces of, and when I do I'll make you a mix of the best songs lyrics-wise. Most of the time, the lyrics are ironic, or, like, meaningful in an oblique way. I mean, they aren't just jump-out-and-bowl-you-over moving, but they tend to get me when I'm not expecting it and end up affecting me more than overt songs do. The older albums actually have better lyrics and more original-sounding songs; the new one is their first big label release, and it sort of shows, but I still like it a lot.

Yeah, The Bird and the Bee seem like a band you'd like. But then, I think you'd have to be super-cynical or something not to be charmed by them. At the concert, she was dressed up almost like Alice in Wonderland or something...cute as could be.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Fall TV - Two Weeks In

Oh, absolutely. Easily the best premiere of the any show this season. I was like, wait, Santos can't be okay--but maybe he is, and I'd like for him to be alive, and by the time we found out that Hilda was imagining the whole thing, yeah. Kick in the gut is a good phrase for it. And suddenly we had the emotional fulfillment of seeing Hilda and Santos so happy, the grief fulfillment of seeing Hilda cope, all without sacrificing plausibility. (I mean, the implausible storylines are for the Meade family, not for Betty's family.)

I just love Mark!

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Fall TV - Two Weeks In

Yeah, it'd be kind of hard to share brains if we don't both watch the show I guess. ;) Are you still watching Grey's, or did you break your obsession where I can't?

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Fall TV - Two Weeks In

I liked last night's Private Practice. I think it'll grow on me, I really do, but Addison just isn't quite the same as she was on Grey's, or something--or else I like her better as the snarky supporting character than as the neurotic lead. I'm a little afraid she's going to turn into Meredith, and that's NOT a good thing. Hee, re: Pushing Daisies! That's a really good description--the bright candy color scheme makes it even more delectable, doesn't it? And this week, I really haven't had time for all the shows (including Pushing Daisies, which I'm putting off until I have the attention span to savor it). I'm running about five behind at the moment, but hopefully the weekend will help.

I have Cingular...I mean, AT&T.; Do you have my number? I'll e-mail it to you. Are you able to watch shows when they're on, or do you tape them and watch them later?

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Pushing Daisies 1×02 (spoilers)

Yes, yes, and yes. I'm glad y'all like it! But then, you were Wonderfalls fans, too, weren't you. Or at least Jon was. They sort of play to the same audience, though I think Pushing Daisies may be more instantly accessible. So far it looks less likely to get canceled (better ratings, more forgiving network), but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Pushing Daisies 1×02 (spoilers)

Abby, I'm sorry I didn't respond to your comment sooner! I didn't get the e-mail notification that you'd commented. *kicks WordPress* Anyway, good! I'm so glad I was convincing. :) Yeah, it would probably be canceled already if it were on Fox (I exaggerate--its ratings have been better than any of the Fox shows I loved that got canceled). But still.

Be sure to blog about it after you get a chance to see it; I'd like to know what you thought.

You used to watch Grey's Anatomy, didn't you? I kept forgetting to text and ask you. Figured you'd like it. Not sure about the Hitchhiker's thing, though, since Pushing Daisies is awesome and the Hitchhiker's movie kind of sucked. The book was great, though, and I can kind of see a similarity in the narrative style.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » David Bordwell on Poetics of Cinema

Heh, yeah. The opening shot is the best part, but it's all good. And you're totally right about the tension--for some reason filmmakers nowadays seem to think that fast editing is the only way to create tension. It can do that, but long shots can be almost unbearably tense, because we unconsciously wait for the cut, and when it doesn't come...tension.

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Touch of Evil Opening Shot

I dunno. I remember the shot, but I don't remember how long it is. I always think of Touch of Evil and The Player at the same time because their super-long tracking shots are also the opening shots.

One of my friends gives a movie analysis assignment in her first year composition course (well, most of my friends do, but I know her version of it the best), and she was demonstrating editing speed, use of filters, use of music, and I don't know what all else to tell her students what to look for. I was so proud of her. I wish I could teach JUST THAT ASSIGNMENT in first year composition, without all the rest of the assignments. Hence, not teaching at all. Ah well. (This part of the comment seems unrelated, but it goes off the part of your comment where you talk about writing about it for a first year course.)

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » Music Monday - Fun Fun Fun Fest Edition

Just a little bit, yeah. ;) I think I'm turning into a concert junkie. When a literature PhD student tells you to see the movie before reading the book... But The Road is really good, and it's going to be interesting to see what sort of film it makes.

I probably will go through more of Antonioni's films. The only other one I've seen is Blowup, and that was ages ago. L'Avventura really whetted my interest, once I stopped trying to figure out what happened to Anna. ;)

Re: Jandy’s Meanderings » FBTop 100: #100 - The Cranes are Flying

Abby, thank you! I was writing so off the cuff that I wasn't sure the post was going to be useful to anybody but me. I actually hadn't heard of this film until it was on that list. I'm looking forward to finding some real gems by blindly following the list. ;)

And yes, exactly. There are only so many stories (in this case, boy meets girl, boy goes to war, girl hopes boy makes it home, which is like, every war movie ever), so unless you find something really unconventional, like Stranger than Fiction, which I think had a very original premise, how you tell the story is going to be much more important than the story you tell
