I see the position as, essentially, serving the same purpose that Gore did as VP in streamlining agencies and reducing waste. Gore doesn't get enough credit for the work he did in that capacity.

This definitely helps Blago from a legal standpoint. As hollow and calculated as it may be, it still blunts the argument of intent on selling the seat. Any prosecutor will tell you its an uphill battle without a "fait accompli."

It is my feeling he will still be convicted of something but this stunt will be incredibly useful to his defense and will get him a reduced sentence at least.

Bush I was deeply involved in the Iran-Contra affair as VP for Reagan. It got a whitewash, but it was on the log of the visitor's record to Bush's office that he met privately with a CIA operative named Felix Rodriguez who was involved with supplying weapons to the Contras. Another individual who was a helicopter pilot scheduled to testify before Congress as to CIA involvement in running guns and drugs mysteriously died of a heroin overdose in his hotel room in Washington DC. Don't forget that Bush I did a stint as head of the CIA.

I can't pin anything on him, but there was a reason Oliver North kept his mouth shut. Maybe that's not credible to you, but I followed Iran-Contra closely at the time and Bush was definitely in it just like Cheney was involved in shading the intelligence for the Iraq War.

Richardson was only getting that post by default because Clinton wanted SoS. I think this now clears the way for someone with better credentials for that post. Richardson's forte was diplomacy not commerce.
