Love the article, but I'd highly recommend not referring to them at 'beatniks'. 'Beats' is fine, but the term 'beatnik' was a media-created term referring to their followers which came later. As mentioned on Wikipedia, "Beatnik was a media stereotype of the 1950s to mid-1960s that displayed the more superficial aspects of the Beat Generation literary movement of the 1950s and violent film images, along with a cartoonish depiction of the real-life people and the spiritual quest in Jack Kerouac's autobiographical fiction."

Ohh, nice. I'll definitely have to try out some of the local McDonald's items when I visit Japan. Tasting Japanese soft serve ice cream (intriguing flavors like lavender, cherry blossom, red bean, etc) is also on my list of things to do.

Oh, and speaking of McDonald's, here's a fascinating Wikipedia article I read a while ago, thought you might find it interesting. There's a bunch of new stuff in there since last time I checked it.
